White Light. Maybe.

King Boiled Potato (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

pretty much, tho first D&C comes close

velko, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

firebyrd is kinda dire, sold that back in a hurry

velko, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

No Other > Gene Clark With The Godsin Brothers > The Fantastic Expedition Of > Roadmaster > Through The Morning, Through The Night >
White Light

Don't know the others. Somehow "No Other" doesn't fit in.

Queueing For Latchstrings (Tom D.), Thursday, 26 February 2009 10:52 (seventeen years ago)

This can't be No Other than the sixth one. At least as long as "Mr. Tambourine Man" isn't an option.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 February 2009 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

No Other > Roadmaster > Through the Morning > White Light - don't know the rest.

sonofstan, Thursday, 26 February 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

i think 'two sides..' doesn't do much, its the fulcrum release. the decline afterwards is actually compelling. up to then (through no other) you have one the greatest bodies of work ever.
i went with roadmaster because i once had a an argument w/ ev4n d4nd0 in the store i used to work at over the title. he insisted it was called roadster.
then he came back after checking and yelled across a busy sales floor that i was right. i got a lot of strange looks.

noizez duk, Thursday, 26 February 2009 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

I need a copy of Roadmaster.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 26 February 2009 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

This is really, really hard.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 26 February 2009 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, I'd recommend it! (xp)

WHITE LIGHT

iatee, Thursday, 26 February 2009 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

It's somewhere between White Light, Roadmaster and No Other on any given day.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 26 February 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

i need a copy of Roadster.

beta blog, Thursday, 26 February 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

No Other fr All Time

bear, bear, bear, Thursday, 26 February 2009 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

I voted No Other but I love them all and they're all just different enough as to not be easy to compare head-to-head.

Preflyte is basically a Gene Clark album too. And if you wanted to you could take the expanded CDs of the first 3 Byrds albums, drop everything Gene didn't write, and come up with one hell of an album.

Still, No Other just barely edges out the others due to the moment in From A Silver Phial when they sing Sleeping in the master's room

Meanwhile I'm writing one of those facebook 25 records that changed your life and knew I needed to include Gene and went with Gosdin Brothers, because that got me hooked and because in it's diversity, it sums up not just so much of what I love about Gene, but of the music of the mid to late 60s. From the baroquely produced Echoes and So You Say You Lost Your Baby, to the folky country-rock of Think I'm Gonna Feel Better, Tried So Hard and Keep on Pushing to the killer Beatles/Byrds rock of Is Yours Is Mine, I Found You, Elevator Operator, Couldn't Believe Her and Needing Someone to the melancholy of The Same One. The Beatles pastiche stuff is definitely not his strongest, but those songs are still a ton of fun.

Great post, Dan.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 27 February 2009 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

anyone heard that record where he re-recorded his vocals on the gosdin bros. album, and i think erased their harmonies? came out around 72 or something

velko, Friday, 27 February 2009 03:48 (seventeen years ago)

I've heard the reissue of it... it's all for the worst, really. IIRC it's got a much more slick sound.

ian, Friday, 27 February 2009 03:49 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, that's what i heard

velko, Friday, 27 February 2009 03:59 (seventeen years ago)

there was a single sundazed put out of a few alternate takes from those sessions and it was just awful.

ian, Friday, 27 February 2009 04:03 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 5 March 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Yes.

One thing we can all agree on, though. The best Gene Clark record is not Two Sides To Every Story.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 March 2009 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

Echoes is probably the most badass song ever so went with Gosdin Brothers.

wilter, Thursday, 5 March 2009 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

'with tomorrow' off white light is just such a beautiful song, takes me by surprise every time - what a singer

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

the one-two punch of "She Don't Care About Time" & "Shooting Star" is incredible imo.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

that whole record is strong.

one year passes...

does anyone wanna rep for through the morning, through the night? i think i need "polly" and "kansas city southern" on record.

ah, how quaint (Matt P), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

corner street bar is one of the worst songs he ever wrote but it's jokey and kinda fun

buzza, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:10 (fourteen years ago)

it has 5-6 v good songs, that would be enough for me

buzza, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:13 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, there are a few songs where he tries to be cheerful but then it's back to the misery we love and cherish him for

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 November 2011 12:00 (fourteen years ago)

Through the Morning is def worth owning. It's probably my least-listened to Clark record, but still a total classic in my book.

one dis leads to another (ian), Saturday, 5 November 2011 02:03 (fourteen years ago)

i am listening to it now, in fact, and wondering why i don't pull it out more. some all-time great tunes on here.

one year passes...

No Other is the one album which can truly be described as Cosmic American Music.

Gene Clark was the unsung genius of American music and this masterpiece proves it.

No Other is one of my Desert Island albums, alongside
A Storm in Heaven (The Verve)
Spirit of Eden (Talk Talk)
Lazer Guided Melodies (Spiritualized)

Graveyard Poet, Monday, 25 February 2013 10:00 (thirteen years ago)

Of course, White Light and Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark are also classics of Americana.

Graveyard Poet, Monday, 25 February 2013 10:01 (thirteen years ago)

twelve years pass...

One thing we can all agree on, though. The best Gene Clark record is not Two Sides To Every Story.

But I wonder if "Past Addresses" might be his best song.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 9 April 2025 17:16 (eleven months ago)

Furthermore, I wonder if the songs on Gene Clark Sings for You would have composed his best album if they had ended up better played and recorded.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 9 April 2025 17:42 (eleven months ago)

But I wonder if "Past Addresses" might be his best song.

Two Sides to Every Story may not be his best album, but the last 3 on side 2 are just astounding.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 9 April 2025 18:41 (eleven months ago)

^^^ definitely
