Because there seem to be some who pay attention.
Examples of this lately have been Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay. Their latest albums were definitely less compressed than "Magic" and "X&Y", both of which had way too much of it though.
Are there other examples of acts who do actually listen to the fans and cut down on the compression again?

In the case of "Viva La Vida", it may have to do with Eno. I don't think I've ever heard an Eno production with that horrible overcompressed sound, so I guess he makes sure to overrule it.

Eno's not exactly a saint; he's never been an audiophile. The album with Paul Simon, for instance, while not exactly brickwalled at a guess (I'm going by my ears, not a wavelength jpeg), isn't uncompressed by any stretch of the imagination.
Have you heard Year of the Leopard by James Yorkston, Geir? I'd like to know what your benchmarks for compression are.
