WOULD RATHER HEAR "rOCK WITH'CHA"

Chris, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't that one of those 'new jack swing' songs I've heard the kids talk about so much lately?

(Great song, I have to say. I vaguely recall that and Donny Osmond's "Soldier of Love" both being popular around the same time -- weird-ass combination.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Naw Ned its a Bobby Brown special from 88(?)

Chris, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Britney Spears has covered it for her forthcoming GH

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The video for this sounds horrible and awe-inspiring.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I cannot imagine how much more awesome (i know, i know...hard to conceive of) this album would be if it were re-recorded today. Holy shit, what would, say, R. Kelly do with "My Perogative" or "Every Little Step"...

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd take T Riley late 80s production and Brown over R bloody Kelly any day

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as Bobby doesn't rap, we're fine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

From mtv.com:

Britney Spears' next single, a cover of Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative," makes a statement about her life, and the accompanying video will too, making it clear that Spears follows no rules but her own.

The singer ignores streetlights and traffic laws as her sports car speeds up a dark road in the Hollywood Hills toward a hillside manor, which has an air of old Hollywood about it, according to a copy of the video treatment obtained by MTV News. A party is in progress, which the singer gladly disrupts, jumping the curb in her car, crashing through a fence and splashing into the pool.

That sort of thing might put a damper on most people's party plans, but Spears just crawls atop the car as it sinks and starts singing, "Everybody's talking/ All this stuff about me/ Why can't they just let me live?" (see "Britney Covers Bobby Brown's 'My Prerogative' For Forthcoming LP").

Her dress soaking wet and clinging to her skin, she steps off the car and goes into the mansion, giving partygoers a look that commands respect and fear. She passes couples making out on the couches as she makes her way into a stainless-steel kitchen, where gourmet food is on display. She grabs a butcher knife, walks across the kitchen brandishing the knife, and just as she steps out of the room, she cuts the straps off her wet dress, letting it fall to the floor.

While it's not clear if she's wearing anything now, Spears walks into a study, where a man sits in the dark with his back to her, watching a black-and-white film projected on a pull-down screen. It looks like a skin flick from the 1940s or '50s, but as he watches it, his cigar smoke curling up and illuminated in the projector beam, it becomes clear that the sexy footage is actually of Spears.

She then heads into a dressing room, where mirrors show all angles of her wearing nothing but her knickers, high heels, stockings and a short fur jacket, as she continues singing, "Why can't they just let me live?/ It's my prerogative." From there she heads into a bedroom, where a dress is laid out on the comforter. She walks toward the bed and away from the camera, letting her jacket fall to the ground. She holds up the new dress as the camera cuts to the party outside, where people are waiting, anxiously, for something, someone.

What they're waiting for, and what they get, will be the surprise of the video, which we won't reveal here. After all, it's our prerogative.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

80s Bobby/New Edition just fucking rules, man. RULES. I'm vaguely opimistic about the Britney cover because the 'Toxic'/'Showdown' boys, Bloodshy & Avant, are all over this one.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Fugees win - they had a GH comp after only two albums ...

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I own both the Bobby Brown Don't Be Cruel video comp AND the Bel Biv Devoe' Poison-era vid comp. BBD have crazier clothes but Bobby Brown's "now I am the star I was born to be" between-video interviews clips are priceless.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

mentally hip-hop smoothed out on the R&B tip with a pop feel appeal to it...

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

From mtv.com

I feel like I've just had my brain replaced by slowly settling concrete.

(Remember how I suggested to Chuck that he didn't like Motley Crue because they were too macho for glam? I think I don't like Britney in general because she's too serious for camp.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I still have my cassette of Don't Be Cruel, it still holds up!

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, she's like Showgirls -- of course she's camp.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The first BBV album is the winner. Bobby Brown, I dunno.

of course she's camp

No, that's why I mentioned the Motley comparison -- seems to be one thing, is another.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I will have to agree to disagree.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair nuff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Bobby Brown was a thug from day one, folks. In early New Edition videos you can see him try to cop feels ("Is This The End?") and physically harass adults ("Mr. Telephone Man").

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Even in "Cool It Now" he looked thugged out compared to the rest of the band.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Cripes, now that you mention it, I don't think I even saw any of those videos. Then again that was during the stretch of the early eighties we had no MTV.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The special guest in the Spears video is Snoop Dogg. I suppose he pimps her out.

david day (winslow), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Special trivia question: name the initial New Edition reunion track available on the album WBBD - Bootcity!

hint: Vanilla Ice should have gotten royalites.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

NINJA RAP!!! Do I win?

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

nope. c'mon! this video got played a bit on MTV. I remember it was part of the same "NEW VIDEOS" ad that featured "Radio Song."

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(Sigh) 'Hit Me Off'.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Which I still like a bit.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

NOPE!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Word To The Mutha! (Remix)" by Bell Biv Devoe (feat. Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill & Ralph Tresvant)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I ain't American, so I guess I was at a distinct (dis)advantage.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)
