most of the stuff on hyperdub is pretty essential imo...
not totally sure what i think about the jkamata – you don’t know what love is b-side of the new joker 12". it is kinda dubsteppy but doesnt really twist its influences so much that it makes me think its doing anything esp novel with the 80s funk/kleer vibe, other than introducing that side of things into a wonky/dubstep approach. i think id rather hear sa-ra or chromeo. but the joker a-side is good.
― Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 12:54 (seventeen years ago)
i really like the jkamata. g-funk! the joker a-side is immense though, as are all joker tracks generally.
IKONIKA.
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 12:58 (seventeen years ago)
i dont really hear the g-funk thing in that song. not sure why ppl (or fact at least) keep writing that. sounds more like quiet storm 80s soul...
― Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 13:00 (seventeen years ago)
didgiedesign by joker = record of the year.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 13:48 (seventeen years ago)
wonky purists may scoff, but "inflation" by crazy cousinz would fit in here for me. love that and several roska 12"s.
also, 90% of rustie.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 13:53 (seventeen years ago)
inflation is pretty straightahead funky.
― Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 13:56 (seventeen years ago)
the J Kamata thing reminds me of Zapp and Roger or something.
I don't really like wonky all that much, if we're calling Joker wonky then yeah, I'm in to him. But contrary to Stirmonster I like about 10% of Rustie rather than 90%.
― Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 14:02 (seventeen years ago)
oh, but also it does have a pretty dubsteppy beat. Not much bass going on there though.
― Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 14:03 (seventeen years ago)
i loathe the term "wonky" btw.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 14:04 (seventeen years ago)
I don't really get what 'wonky' is. I'm assuming a halfway-house between dubstep and funky?

As far as I can see it's a bit of an amorphous term, I mean some of Rustie's stuff is just like Dilla influenced hip-hop with maybe a bit of a crunk and techno influence.
― Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)
and maybe slightly grimey.

― Martinclark, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 14:29 (seventeen years ago)
i dont think wonky producers are like the new versions of afx or squarepusher for grime/dubstep but theyre def more 'outsiders', sonically if not in terms of where they belong to the scene. but there is sometimes that kinda sense of being 'removed' from/irreverent of the scenes/sounds they draw from in their tracks. or its just more electronica-y.
― Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 14:34 (seventeen years ago)
The first time I heard 'wonky' used as a crypto-genre name was a few years ago and it concerned mainly London-based distorted shifty techno people like Jerome Hill and Subhead and Neil Landstrumm - who now jocks lots of dubstep for his productions
― Luka ModReq (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

My basis for saying it's not C64 is that Joker is at most 20 years old and therefore has probably never seen a C64.
― Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 15:09 (seventeen years ago)
i think the aphex/squarepusher comparison stands in bedridden suburban white guys taking the framework of a UK (black) urban dance music and fiddled about with the signifiers and throwing in little nods and winks to other genres to show theyve been to uni. I suppose theres more actual dancing done to Joker/starkey wonky though. Guys like dorian concept are definetly the gimpier end, mopst of his stuff flaps about too much to work on the dancefloor

Puzzled when 'nuum headz who cite "IDM" as the worst music ever because of its surfeit of amateurish shite (thanks for being old and white enough to remember it) then go nuts over similar slapdash out-of-tune bedroom random-note bobbling because now it has some half-stepping snares and a slightly wobblier bass and its creator is under 20 and pulls street poses in a hoodie
(I like some of this stuff but the less devil's-advocate version of this post was way tldr and I know nobody was looking for my opinion anyhow)
― a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:27 (seventeen years ago)
because its exactly like all of the prog house bashing minimal/'Deep house' heads, theyre making a lot of noise to try and throw everyone the scent of them blowing their student loans on the warp and rephlex back catalogues in the early 00's whenever theyre pretending to have been repping el-b and todd edwards
― straightola, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:36 (seventeen years ago)
spacecadet is pretty otm, but its a bit diff cos you have guys like joker working with mcs, and being endorsed by them... which might just be smart moves being made w/r/t mcs opening their fanbase etc but then you have insider/outsider ppl like kode 9 backing them. it seems a bit blurrier than just underground vs nu-idm.
― Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:46 (seventeen years ago)
joker came out of grime as well and tbh isn't really very idm at all imo. I can see how some of this stuff can be termed that way and I do find some of it quite yawnsome (Hudson Mo, Flying Lotus, although I'm not sure the latter fits?).
― Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:49 (seventeen years ago)
i think jokers definitely seperate from much of this scene, he has been touted as a grime producer to watch for time, being from bristol just gives an oppurtunity to see him as a seperate entity from the london grime lads.
― straightola, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:49 (seventeen years ago)
i also dont really understand the lionising of flying lotus, he was making middle of the road dilla take offs until he played with Kode9 at sonar. I played los Angeles about 3 times and then just gave up trying to find what everyone else seemed to be hearing.
― straightola, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 16:51 (seventeen years ago)
Is Flying Lotus actually wonky? I thought it was meant to described Joker, Zomby, Rustie what not. I like Joker (a lot), the rest I can sort of take or leave.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

oh god yes. been trying to avoid it - only realised that i might like it when i heard joker and ikonika tagged with the label, but it seems from this thread i might be wrong? not really into rustie, zomby et al though to be fair haven't given them much of a chance.
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)
there's this really good Rusie track with a ridiculously dayglo high pitched synth lead that is beyond awesome but i can never remember what it's called and it certainly isn't on the jagz the smack ep because that is zzz.

I have spent the last year trying to figure out what the fuck a "'nuum" is after ignoring any mention of it in music criticism that I've read. Is this something that people buy into at a live music/scene level or is it just something that writers cooked up?
― mh, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 21:29 (seventeen years ago)
As in, I've read it for well over a decade but kind of read around all the statements that treated this concept like some sort of hallowed ground
― mh, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 21:30 (seventeen years ago)
I found a video clip of Simon Reynolds explaining it, but I really don't think I'm going to buy his argument here: http://www.factmagazine.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2028&Itemid=28

― Stevie T, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 22:04 (seventeen years ago)
fly lo is actually really good live, pre programmed or not. much prefer hearing him do a set to the album, which is a bit too 'mild'. i like the way it seems to have dread/downtempo moods all at the same time but it just seems like it could have been made in the late 90s, give or take a few dilla-isms. dont hear much bass in it either, for all the talk of it being dubstep influenced.
― Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

after a few more listens i warmed up to it somewhat, but i still don't think it holds a candle to his Polyfolk Dance EP or his demo Hudson's Heeters Vol. 1
the worst part of Butter are the tracks with that unlistenable Prince-ape; and people complain about Basement Jaxx's vocalists...
― een, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 04:03 (sixteen years ago)
all the vocalists on this are pretty crap-to-awful. the album has a few good tracks where he kinda settles into a groove, but for the most part its just a bit irritating and jabbing. maybe thats just a prob with wonky as a whole, im not sure, but it does get trying over the course of an album. and oh god@that artwork.

i duno why simon reynolds insists that its terror danjah whos had a big influence on joker and the purple guys, i dont really hear it. their stuff is more about big synth melodies whereas terror was about finessed ultra minimal short and sweet synth melodies.

rustie vs joker who is better
― moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 03:23 (sixteen years ago)
Knee jerk reaction sez Joker is/was better, but I'll admit to being slightly prejudiced against Rustie cuz of the pretty lame Jagz The Smack EP and he might have gotten better since (also he looks. But Joker also seems like one of those dudes who might end up taking the "people say I'm a genius thing" too seriously and end up making a wonky Saturnzreturn or something.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 03:32 (sixteen years ago)

― moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 03:51 (sixteen years ago)
Zig Zag is epic. Rustie has a tune Cosmic Foam which is pretty damn nuts in a new funk way. Did that get a release somewhere?
― Tooth Far I (csa), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

i like some of rusties stuff a lot (the jagz ep esp) and some later releases but hes not been nearly consistent enough for me.
silkies more proper dubstep imo isnt he? never really got into him that much tbh - seemed too softcore for my liking.
