i often think it's a class-based response, tbh. there's something specifically entitled and middle/upper class about the cutie-pie ennui of twee indie. it often seems to be the disaffection of those who never really had to care about anything, could afford to be indolent and romantically wistful, and i suspect that annoys a lot of people.
