Late 80's R&B: S & D? or shall we call this Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Keith Sweat, Stevie B and other 80's R&B throwdowns?

search long and hard : Chuckii Booker "Turned Away"

Chris, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was into a lot of that stuff at the time. 'Something Just Ain't Right' by Keith Sweat, although crude by today's standards with a harsh bludgeoning snare, still sounds nice (except I sold it on eBay). Jam and Lewis were in full flow in that period of course - Alexander O'Neal, Janet Jackson etc.

David, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: Al B. Sure, Troop, Timex Social Club, Bell Biv DeVoe, Force MDs, Lisa Lisa, etc. Can I include Michel'le, even though her debut came out in '90? Oops there goes my mouse hitting submit...

ALLIANCE

Chris, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay so this is an early '90s R&B S&D thread heh.

Andy K, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't forget the S.O.S. Band.

Lee G, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

toni tony tone (or whatever it was) had one really great song too.

fritz, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No. You're all wrong. This stuff was hiddeous!

The only decent records from this period that were even vaguely associated were de la soul's Eye Know and My, Myself and I!

phil, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

right on phil

CopUzYerWhipper, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tony Toni Tone had more than one great song! They had "Little Walter" and "Let's Get Down".

Guy - Guy (first album)

Bel Biv Devoe covered a Poison song?

Search MC Hammer!

jel --, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevie V you say? "Dirty Cash" is an awesome track, especially when mixed with "Acid Thunder".

..I know, I know, the other one. I thought the culmination of that style was "No Diggity", after which it went all Timbaland-y.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clarke B., Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tribe mentions these artists in their songs?

Chris, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

En vogue ya never gonna get it song. Does anyone know if there were any good collaborations with rap artists (didn't Rakim do a song with someone)?

search for the four-CD Jam & Lewis EMI Songwriters promo-only comp, which I have only because of a record-store job where it came in. starts w/Klymaxx's "Wild Girls" and goes up through 1995. pretty freakin' great

Anyone remember a song called "Things Are Not The Same Without You" by First Love? It was a ballad in the style of the SOS Band's "Weekend Girl" and was just beautiful. I have it on 12" but seeing as I have neither my records nor a turntable I'd love to find it on CD somewhere.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone else love the recent LSG album?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What does the remix of "Tender love" sound like?

Jim Janse, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Just for the hell of it, some earlier 80s but what the fuck:

Johnny Gill - My, My, My Lyrics
Buy | Discography | Reviews | Song Lyrics

So good
My, My, My
Listen
Put on your red dress
And slip on your high heels
And some of that sweet perfume
It sure smells good on you
Slide on your lipstick
Let your hair down
Cause Baby when you get through
I'm going to show you
Tonight will be a special night
No matter where we go
And I'm so proud to be with you
I just wanna let you know

You got my saying
My, My, My
My, My, My
You sure look good tonight
And your so damn fine
I gotta say
My, My, My
My, My, My
You sure look good tonight

After all this time
Slip on your nightgown
Step into our bedroom
First I wanna take sometime
I just wanna look at you
Girl you are so fine
I can't believe you're mine
And all I wanna do
I wanna make love to you
Tonight will be a special night
A minute more to come
And I'm so proud to be with you
So proud to share you're love

My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My
Make love all night long
Make love all night long
'Til the dawn
Come on
Come on
Sweet little thing I need you

And I'm so proud to be with you
So proud to share you're love
My, My, My
My, My, My
You sure look good tonight

I wanna love you in everyway
I wanna love you in everyway
Let me
Let me
Show you how sweet it's gonna be
I wanna show you things that you
Never, ever, ever seen before
Put your nightgown on
Let your hair hang low
Step into our room
I'm in the mood to love you all night long

My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My
My, My, My

Does anyone rember a slow RAP song feat. Rickey Bell (from BellBivDevoe) singing the hook? I believe it came out around 89-90, not sure.

Bernie Unforget, Friday, 1 October 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

No mention of Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance"?

Also Jody Watley had a couple of good songs: "Don't you want me", "Looking for a new love", "Friends" (with Eric B), and a couple more.

Seb (Seb), Friday, 1 October 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just listening to the excellent house mix of Bobby Brown's "Two Can Play That Game".

I am very sad that this thread failed to mention Terence Trent D'Arby. Introducing the Hardline was one of the greatest albums of the '80s, and one of the best debut albums of all time.

Also a quick one-off nod to Tamara & the Seen, "Everybody Dance."

You're The One For Me - D-Train

Absolute perfection in design. I found a D-Train best-of in a bargain bin once. Best 3.99 I ever spent.

I've been listening to a lot of 80s R&B thanks to the ILM poll and updating some decade old folders. From this remove, there really was some sort of mass extinction event that occurred between 86 and 87. Frankly, I blame radio formats, samplers, rap, and boy bands. When a country singer like [Deborah Allen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU4dRbB29-A) can be a post-1986 highlight, you know there was some sort of awful, corrosive environment going on then.
