Inspired after hearing One Step Beyond on Mark Radcliffe yesterday and One Better Day this morning.

List taken from everyhit.com, apologies if I've missed anything out.

Creedence Clearwater Couto (Billy Dods), Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for "The Sun And The Rain", I don't know why.

Possibly because most of the rest have been played to death.

Still, one long list of great singles, and only "the Sweetest girl" a total misfire.

Mark G, Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

"Embarrassment", but the first 18 or so of these are all great.

Jeff W, Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:50 (seventeen years ago)

"Bed and Breakfast Man" wasn't a single?

Queueing For Latchstrings (Tom D.), Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

no, but it did get a video.

Mark G, Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

I think that's my favourite Madness song

Queueing For Latchstrings (Tom D.), Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

wasn't sun and rain actually included on the picture disc version of Keep Moving.

Agree 100% though, tis one of my fave singles of theirs.

However, the best has to be a tough call between Grey Day and My Girl (first 7" i ever got, and still despite 1000s of listens does special things for me).

worst : Wings of A Dove and Driving in My Car, hated em then, hate em even more now. novelty records both.

mark e, Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:52 (seventeen years ago)

First 7" I ever got (given) was Baggy Trousers! Still have it but it's pretty worn out cos we used to play it in this Fisher Price portable 7" player all the time.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:54 (seventeen years ago)

you see, baggy trousers makes me cringe now due to it being overplayed, yet my girl still ticks the boxes.

was a big fan, but not of the 'nutty' side. always prefered it when they were hungover and depressed.

mark e, Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:58 (seventeen years ago)

Tory turncoats they may now be, but they didn't half make some decent hit parade picks in their day. My pick is "Shut Up," one of the most out there hits of an out there year (1981). Carla Bley chord changes ahoy!

Bernard Braden Misreads Stephen Leacock (Marcello Carlin), Thursday, 26 February 2009 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

One Better Day. love the nutty stuff too, but this is such a great song.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

This is seriously very very very very hard. So many great ones to choose from!

In the end, I went for "(Tomorrow's) Just Another Day", but it might as well have been "Grey Day", "My Girl", "Embarrassment", "Cardiac Arrest", "Our House" or "Michael Caine". All of them fantastic pop songs!

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 5 March 2009 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for "Wings of a Dove" because it deserves a vote and I guess nobody else will.

Peaches Gandalf (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 March 2009 08:06 (seventeen years ago)

I know it's prolly not very cool to vote for 'our house' but damn I love that song

iatee, Thursday, 5 March 2009 08:10 (seventeen years ago)

came here to vote 'bed & breakfast man', ill go for 'grey day' because of the drum intro

vain_bowers, Thursday, 5 March 2009 08:53 (seventeen years ago)

actually, grey day is a masterpiece

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 5 March 2009 10:22 (seventeen years ago)

"our house" - something about the brass and strings and the sinister turn of the lyrics and the way it gives me goosebumps every time.

the next grozart, Thursday, 5 March 2009 10:35 (seventeen years ago)

Tomorrow's (Just Another Day)

Cheating by giving hints in the poll title. :)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 March 2009 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

(In fact, the only thing I really like about "One Step Beyond" is before the music starts)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 March 2009 00:09 (seventeen years ago)
