Let's face it, Casablanca Records was the greatest label in existence. PROVE ME WRONG.

I would only say that Alligator and Elektra (when they had the Butterfly label) were really comprable...if we're talking about decadent, insane labels where decisions were made without reason, morales or scruples (oh yeah, and they were pretty successful)

PROVE ME WRONG.
Um, they released totally crummy solo albums of each Kiss member == Complete and utter dogshit.

Lord Custos X, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The released T. Rex's "Light of Love", basically tracks from UK releases "Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tommorrow" and "Bolan's Zip Gun". Since these were both berserk albums that sound like nothing else I must say Search!

Sean is right, but I would say that. I say search the four CD box set about the label, at least.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Great label, Patrick Juvet & Jacques Morali rule!

Paul Richards, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you're right. Search: "Funkytown"! And the Village People.
Destroy: Well, Angel were a bit of a letdown, though they were good in Foxes.

Arthur, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Two of my favorite FZ songs -- "Punky's Whips" and "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes" -- owe their existence to Angel. And Casablanca released Kiss Alive!.

For those reasons -- and Donna Summer -- I guess Casablanca was OK.

I remember yesterday (the album) by Donna Summer is such an underrated record.

eight years pass...

undoubtedly the worst-run record company ever yet casablanca produced many memorable records in the disco era. didn't think I would like the book but mr. harris' inside story is a fascinating look at the excesses of the seventies and the beginning of the music industry's (now we can say inevitable) decline.

taking quaaludes @ the office is a recipe for disaster - DUH. still this is more insightful IMO than many more serious books on the music biz even though I came away thinking that "the record companies put out better music when they were run by crooks & music geeks rather than corporate bean-counters."

Popmatters ran a well-written article a while back on this label - http://www.popmatters.com/pm/feature/109832-part-one-leading-the-camel-to-water-1974-1975/
