Anyone listen to the new Mountains album yet? I just downloaded it from Other Music, and it's a big time jam. The cover is a little reminiscent of Merriweather Post Pavilion, which is fitting, I guess, as Choral and MPP are my two favorite albums of Jan/Feb 2009.
Any opinions?

I like it, particularly the beautiful droney sections. Only heard it a couple of times though as yet.

Mountains is doing a live set on my radio show today, 5 p.m., 89.1 FM in New York and wnyu.org everywhere else...It is going to be supremely awesome.
Sorry for the self-promotion.

Also, this record = one of my top 3 of 2009 for sure.
Just heard the title track of this, which is available as a free download on Last FM. Very nice long ambient droney piece.

New album is very good, if not exactly a departure for the guys.

Sounded, I'd say, fairly alright, at a first listen...

I'm still not entirely sold on the first three tracks, but the massive "Propeller" and "Liana" alone are pushing this up to the top of my list already. I left work late last night and was driving through Millenium Park on my way home, and was passing by Pritzker Pavilion with the Chicago skyline in the background and the song just fit so well. I'll always have that image in my head when I hear this album. And the electric guitar at the end of "Liana" could have very well been cheesy, but I think they work really well, coming as they do after "Propeller", sort of a fitting climax.
This, a little less dramatic and from a lower vantage point, was basically the view that soundtracked part of "Propeller":

I really love Centralia and especially "Propeller," which is the best thing they've done, period. Meanwhile - new EP, Mountains Mountains Mountains seems good on first listen. Though in truth my air conditioner is on so it's hard to know where my stereo ends and the rest of my living room begins.

Mountains Mountains Mountains is actually five years old.

Oh! Reissue, I guess? Date says 2013.

Yes it's a reissue. Haven't heard it yet, my copy is still in the post somewhere. Chronologically it comes between Sewn and Choral which always seemed really different so I'm looking forward to seeing how this one fits. Anyhow, go and see them live if you ever get the chance - I saw them here about five months ago in front of literally only 4 or 5 people but it was one of the most immersive and transporting performances I've ever seen.

I’m coming to terms with the fact that it seems like Mountains will not keep making records - been a long time since Centralia. But for no special reason I searched these guys last week and found that they each put out new solo albums this year. Koen Holtkamp under the name BEAST, and Brendon Anderegg under his own name - the Anderegg album (“June”) in particular is really good.

Yeah I heard Koen's record, need to go back and give it another listen though cos it didn't really grab me the first time. I miss Mountains, but it'll always be lovely thing revisiting those albums.

Air Museum has been really nice to listen to today and Centralia has always been popular when I play my wax at the end of a night when having friends over. There's just something so balanced and thoughtful about their compositions and arrangements. Their music never seems to "meander" and while it has an improvised approach and feel, there's always something pushing and pulling and engaging.
Really hope they put out something new in the future. Very underrated band, honestly.

They have such a great, steady patient sound. I love Choral and Sewn of the group albums, but the record I find myself returning to most often is Koen Holtkamp's Gravity/Bees.

Ooh, this thread revive reminded me of how good I thought Holtkamp's debut on Type was back in 2008, and it looks like Boomkat is currently selling the mp3 release of it for only 4 GBP: https://boomkat.com/products/field-rituals-75ab36ce-8935-4cfb-ab2b-192669beeaac

I haven't really heard any of their solo work, so looking forward to jumping into that.

I was not too keen on the album Holtkamp released this year though I like pretty much everything else he’s done
