I've included all the albums, EPs and comps (basically everything but the 7" and CD singles) from the official Spectrum, E.A.R. and Sonic Boom discography (can be found at http://www.sonic-boom.info/discography), plus a few major releases since the website was updated... hope I haven't forgotten anything worth a vote!

Based on the past couple of shows, I'm ready to vote for On The Wings Of Mercury

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Sunday, 1 March 2009 07:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Chris, I just wrote you an email a few minutes ago.

Still More Goth Than Your Cat's Asshole (Bimble), Sunday, 1 March 2009 07:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Can't be anything other than "Highs Lows and Heavenly Blows".

I've been *really* into "Live at the Dream Palace" lately, I might pick that 2nd over "The Koner Experiment".

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 1 March 2009 12:29 (fifteen years ago) link

OH GOD, JUST... CAN'T... ARGGHHGHGHGGH.

I do love Highs, Lows etc. but I'm also a massive stan of Forever Alien.

But then again, the EAR stuff is something so totally... DIFFERENT that I can't really compare.

New album, though... NEW ALBUM? I'm with Barrus on that one.

Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 1 March 2009 12:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm most tempted to go for Soul Kiss but there are really about half a dozen I could go for, depending on my mood.

ilxor, Sunday, 1 March 2009 20:09 (fifteen years ago) link

A valiant effort, ilxor, but you left off my favorite, the "True Love Will Find You In the End" ep.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Soul Kiss. I also have Phenomena 256 but don't love it.

But the REAL best thing Sonic Boom's ever done was an exclusive track for Asltralwerk's "Excursions in Ambience: The Third Dimension" comp.

Jomanda Lepore (Stevie D), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:29 (fifteen years ago) link

If any EAR gets a vote, I'll be shocked.

Anyway for albums it's Soul Kiss edging Highs, Lows and/or Spectrum, but the singles/EP stuff from the early period is probably Sonic's best non-S-3 stuff so What Before Came After is getting my vote (which contains the entirety of the True Love Will Find You In The End EP, I believe.)

Alex in SF, Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I hate it all. All my various AMG reviews are just lies.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:37 (fifteen years ago) link

an album like soul kiss would be any other group's career highlight, but he's done a ton of other great stuff too. i probably play the what came before after comp the most out of anything. that thing is so strong from beginning to end. i have stuff like forever alien and undo the taboo on vinyl, but for some reason i don't play them much. i sold my owsley ep and i should have kept it cuz the package was so cool. AND i sold my pristine copy of the first solo album and this was one of the dumbest things i've ever done cuz i really like it and i've never seen another one. (e.a.r. stuff i tend to buy used on cd and never play. even though i like the idea of them.)

scott seward, Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Right, I'm going to vote for E.A.R. just to prove you wrong, ha ha!

But that means I have to dig out my actual vinyl collection... eep. Things may fall on me if I go in the cupboard of doom.

Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:46 (fifteen years ago) link

tie a rope to something solid and then round your waist before you go in, just in case.

Ed, Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm more worried about things falling *out* and hitting me. If a Bentley Rhythm Ace fell on me, that could give me concussion, you know!

Craft Punk (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:49 (fifteen years ago) link

A near complete list, but the absence of Sonic Boom & Sunray's 'Music for the Dreamachine' amazes me! A brilliant record, that.

I'll delve into Spectrum/EAR/SB soon - not a crime, to say the least - but for now I'm thinking this for me will be between Köner Experiment, Highs Lows, Soul Kiss and the frighteningly beautiful Forever Alien.

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 1 March 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 7 March 2009 00:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh god, I've still not made up my mind. I might panic vote.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 09:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh sod it, I closed my eyes and voted for Forever Alien. Mainly because I couldn't find my copy of Highs Lows and Heavenly Blows.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 09:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I voted for Forever Alien too - several light years ahead of its time with a gloriously insane tour.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Come On Pilgrim is done, I'm gonna go listen to Forever Alien now. Or maybe The New Atlantis comp. Don't know. Argh. Decisions.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't know these records, sorry. Are they ultra stoner, very, very slow records?

Goth As A Moth (Bimble), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Um... no. Well, some of them are. Depends. It's very varied. Some of them are blinding amphetamine records, some of them are droning buzzing LSD records, some of them are thudding throbbing smack records, some of them are mind-melting DMT trip records (no, quite literally!) It's all over the (candy) shop.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:11 (fifteen years ago) link

this is so frustrating. I can only find about 5 of my Spectrum and EAR and Sonic Boom albums - which is, granted, a lot, but still only a tiny portion of my actual collection. I don't even know how much of it is even in this country.

Yeah, the opening slithers of "Feels Like I'm Slipping Away" just came on, and I'm thinking I made the right choice.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:16 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost

Hahaha. Well that's a lot to try to figure out. I do like The Darkside's All That Noise, but no one really cares about that post-Spacemen 3 thing, I think.

Goth As A Moth (Bimble), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:17 (fifteen years ago) link

LOTS OF PEOPLE CARE ABOUT THE POST-SPACEMEN TING.

Especially around here. Barrus and I will beat them up if they don't.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:20 (fifteen years ago) link

If you like The Darkside, go for earlier Spectrum, because that's the most Spacemen-like.

Probably best if you don't dive head first into, like, Phenomena 256 or Data Rape or something.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:21 (fifteen years ago) link

What Came Before After is a good entre into that sort of stuff.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:23 (fifteen years ago) link

But the thing is, I like the Darkside's All That Noise more than Spacemen 3. So now you're going to beat me with a billy club. But that's okay, I forgive you.

Goth As A Moth (Bimble), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, Bimblepaws.

I'm not going to beat you, but we might have to send you for re-education.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Time for me to go to sleep now, sorry. Very tired, drunk, etc.

Goth As A Moth (Bimble), Saturday, 7 March 2009 10:38 (fifteen years ago) link

'Music for the Dreamachine' is indeed excellent. My favorite here is 'Beyond the Pale'.
