Ian Carr RIP

Very sad to learn of this over the weekend.

I loved his work with Don Rendell in particular - an eloquent and extremely original take on post-bop; as with Nucleus, he paralleled Miles in so many ways but never remotely came across as a copyist. Also brilliant with Ardley, Centipede and the larger editions of SME. In addition he was a great writer and MM columnist of old who wrote the definitive Miles biography.

Looks as though he didn't live the easiest of lives and his later years were sad indeed but RIP and we'll talk about it later big man.

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Monday, 2 March 2009 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

Only know him from the Miles book I'm afraid. Really ought to investigate some of the music, my knowledge of that whole British jazz scene is as spotty as hell. Does sound like he had a rough old time in his last years, poor guy.

four months pass...

If you're out there Marcello, there's a Brit jazz primer in the Wire this month w/ John Surman, Mike Westbrook, Centipede, Nucleus, Harry Beckett, Keith Tippett etc. Not that you'd need it, of course.
