tricky one

it's either the beast and dragon adored or my mathematical mind

i'll go with beast and dragon today

۞_۞ (ciderpress), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

hmm i love this album - i'm voting 'my mathematical mind' narrowly over 'i summon you', which is probably my favorite acoustic song by them

burt_stanton and ernie (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:16 (sixteen years ago)

I adore this one too -- maybe my favorite Spoon. "They Never Got You" summons the insular, paranoid vibe better than anything else they've recorded.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

i love "sister jack" but i always thought ppl disliked that song?

burt_stanton and ernie (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:36 (sixteen years ago)

I love every single song on here but it's gotta be "I Turn My Camera On" classic track

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

Spoon best experienced in live setting... "My Mathematical Mind" best live track, perfect show closer... voted for that.

ilxor, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 04:02 (sixteen years ago)

"Sister Jack" for the line "I was in this drop D metal band we called Requiem."

Zeno, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 04:57 (sixteen years ago)

They Never Got You is maybe my favorite Spoon song, so that. But I Summon You verrry close behind.

f f murray abraham (G00blar), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)

I have a half-baked theory that the beast and the dragon are Lennon and McCartney, but I'm not sure it holds up to much scrutiny.

f f murray abraham (G00blar), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 05:30 (sixteen years ago)

wasn't there a rumor that you were supposed to play this album with the tracks in the opposite order?

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 05:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah

f f murray abraham (G00blar), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 05:32 (sixteen years ago)

i think mainly because beast and dragon mentions some of the other tracks, so therefore it was 'the end of the story'?

f f murray abraham (G00blar), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 05:33 (sixteen years ago)

album really is great. and i turn my camera on

iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 05:34 (sixteen years ago)

im gonna listen to this backwards tonight. what up 2006!!

burt_stanton and ernie (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

i'll go backwards if I don't listen to this backwards tonight

incredible album!

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 March 2009 02:29 (sixteen years ago)

I like the title track best.

staggerlee, Thursday, 5 March 2009 02:38 (sixteen years ago)

They Never Got You, because it's the most fun to play air drums to.

nate woolls, Thursday, 5 March 2009 08:28 (sixteen years ago)

finally decided on "The Beast and Dragon, Adored."

Bee OK, Saturday, 7 March 2009 08:37 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 8 March 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah that's fair enough. I could've voted for any of those apart from the bottom 4.

nate woolls, Monday, 9 March 2009 08:25 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

My Mathematical Mind is a fabulous piece of music, one that soars over the rest of this album. Did they do much else like it?

acoleuthic, Thursday, 30 September 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

ok Was It You? and They Never Got You also fucking awesome - prefer this band krauty

acoleuthic, Thursday, 30 September 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

prefer this every band krauty

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Thursday, 30 September 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

"two sides of m. valentine" deserved to place higher

swvl, Thursday, 30 September 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

"My Mathematical Mind" isn't even close to being one of the best songs on this record.

markers, Thursday, 30 September 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

"Sister Jack," "I Turn My Camera On," "The Beast and Dragon, Adored," "I Summon You," "The Two Sides . . .," and "Merchants of Soul" are all excellent.

markers, Thursday, 30 September 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

Gax5 is a more consistent record overall; this drops off.

markers, Thursday, 30 September 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 30 September 2010 22:17 (fifteen years ago)

I was thinking about posting the first 4 tracks off this album on the best 4-track runthread.

nate woolls, Thursday, 30 September 2010 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

Missed this - would have given "Was It You?" another vote.

da croupier, Thursday, 30 September 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

beast and dragon adored is probably my favorite spoon song.

phantompenguin, Thursday, 30 September 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

markers u either crazy or don't play guitar

― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.)

I can play the guitar, but my skills are very limited. Still, not sure why that fact's important. I listened to this record a lot when it came out and revisited at least some, if not all, of the songs in like 2007 or something, and those are the songs that I remember really liking.

markers, Thursday, 30 September 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

because the solo is awesome ;-)

markers, Thursday, 30 September 2010 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

I just prefer the tracks where the band is ROCKING OUT to minimal stuff like this I guess. At least on this record!

markers, Thursday, 30 September 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

I cannot for the life of me remember how MMM goes, but the brilliance of Sister Jack is in the coda when they seem to hang an extra beat in the riff. It's so hard to aniticpate.

five months pass...

playing this tonight and than noticed that i started this poll exactly two years ago.

still such a monster of an album, loove the funkyness. Spoon really are the best band from this last decade.

...this album has been so good it has made me ponder the question, is this actually better than Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga?

World Series champion San Francisco Giants (Bee OK), Saturday, 5 March 2011 06:53 (fourteen years ago)

well actually, no, it's not better than Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, this album is very top heavy, got me really excited. it very good but side two just can't keep up, though "They Never Got YOu" is their best song on certain days.

hard to believe that this is the 10th anniversary.

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 November 2015 02:25 (ten years ago)

oh there is an article, will need to take some time to read that as it is quite long.

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 November 2015 02:26 (ten years ago)

comparing the results of this poll to the results of the 2015 Spoon poll is instructive

Songs from a One Room House in an Uninteresting Location (bernard snowy), Thursday, 5 November 2015 04:36 (ten years ago)

Appalled that my five year old Monkey Feelings YouTube link upthread is broken... it's a random b-side but it's Spoon in a nutshell - tightly wound, nothing wasted, a part comes in and does something and then vanishes, every "woo" and "c'mon" in just the right place.

the_ecuador_three, Thursday, 5 November 2015 10:49 (ten years ago)

Also,

I have a half-baked theory that the beast and the dragon are Lennon and McCartney, but I'm not sure it holds up to much scrutiny.

Turns out it's from an old French tapestry

I think the lyrics themselves are about the creative process and being in a band and writing and recording.

listening to the new deluxe version on spotify

was never a mega-fan of this band but i will say in the 00s there was an awful lot of post-flaming lips protools brian wilson boy genius stuff or ornate "lion king" folky shit that was always really cluttered and this band has a really nice sense of space and arrangements, feel like sometimes the stuff sounds a little "digital" esp the drums but they never cram too much in a track
