TS: Sleep's Dopesmoker vs. Electric Wizard's Dopethrone

Message Bookmarked

Which of these two is the Holy Grail of stoned psych heavy metal from the inner void of chaos? Julian Cope clearly prefers the Sleep masterpiece, but I humbly beg to differ, voting for the Electric Wizard ungodly capolavoro.

And you, folks?

Dopesmoker easy. Dopethrone always seems like it can't decide between stoner epic and discrete stoner tunesmithing. The former has its mind made up.

Would vote for Holy Mountain over either of these though tbh.

been HOOS, where yyyou steene!? (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

I definitely play EW Dopethrone more - and that's reason enough to get my vote.

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:11 (sixteen years ago)

Dopesmoker, although I think I like Conference of Birds more than either.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:13 (sixteen years ago)

^yea for a second i thought it was 'holy mountain' vs. 'dopethrone'. in which i'm not sure what i'd vote for. no question tho that 'holy mountain' >>>>> 'dopesmoker'

i have to disagree with hoos tho and vote 'dopethrone.' the riffs are better. i actually think 'dopesmoker' is a little overrated, maybe due to the re-issuing/label dispute/general stoner lore about the recording of the album/it's fucking amazing cover. (ha tho i suppose the same could be said for 'dopethrone.')

mark cl, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

xpost - i'd take any OM album over either of these.... have we had this conversation before? was there an EW vs Sleep thread a while back?

mark cl, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

i want to love 'dopesmoker' b/c it is so epic, but i just feel it drags on. i listen to EW dopethrone far more often, and i think i've made it through 'dopesmoker' only a couple of times before i put on something else

mark cl, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

Yes! xpost

Music along the lines of Sleep (Dopesmoker) or Electric Wizard (Dopethrone)

ilxor, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

Not so much a "vs" thread, though, as a recommendations thread that quickly died out.

Cindy Sherman I'm Your #1 Fan (J0hn D.), Thursday, 5 March 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

i think dopethrone vs. holy mountain would have been a more compelling poll actually

He grew in Pussyville. Population: him. (call all destroyer), Thursday, 5 March 2009 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

I like Dopethrone more as an album, but I'm always way more happy when EW tunes come up in shuffle.

There, I said it. (About my non-challop.)

Also, I remember buying weed from a dude in a parking lot with Dopethrone blaring, his eyes red and beard wild, everything wet from recent rain and empty around us. It seemed like one last outpost of insanity and cool. (As per usual, the album that I have more positive memories associated with wins, because I make no real pretense toward objective evaluation of the albums.)

I downloaded Dopesmoker based on the praise in this thread. It doesn't hold a bong to Dopethrone.

abanana, Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

wow

i mean, i picked 'dopethrone,' but it's not like it was so obvious to me! and for those who picked sleep, they can't think these albums are that different! which one did you pick??

mark cl, Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

I downloaded Dopethrone based on this thread, and while great I don't think it's as good as Dopesmoker, so Dopesmoker it is.

when was Dopesmoker recorded?

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

'99, but it didn't get a proper release until 2003.

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Thursday, 12 March 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

What's shocking is everyone saying they like Holy Mountain better than either. I listened to that one a few times and it was way too dull for anything more than that.

Dopethrone, btw. But Sleep's rhythm section on Dopesmoker is pretty astonishing.

agreed -- dragonaut is a killer jam, but i cant really remember any others in particular at the moment... theres a bluegrassy lil thing?

69, Thursday, 12 March 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

I've always struggled with listening to holy mountain as well... besides dragonaut, yeah.

usually I'm like, "well, they took things as far as they possibly could with jerusalem/dopesmoker, why listen to holy mountain?" but I heard jerusalem first, so maybe that's a factor.

I like both albums a lot but I'll take the jerusalem ver. of the sleep album over dopethrone. I listen to jerusalem a bunch at work too. perfect for blocking out all distractions and zoning out.

original bgm, Thursday, 12 March 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

Good call, great music for repetitive tasks while at work.

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Thursday, 12 March 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

OK, first of all, Dopethrone is not the best Electric Wizard album, Come My Fanatics... is. Dopethrone has the best cover art, but cover art and music are two different things.

Second of all, Sleep are boring, yes, but nowhere near as boring as Om. I can't even convey in words how boring Om records are, because as soon as I put one on to try and describe it I thuee;aubhwo846y (sorry; passed out, head hit the keyboard, ha ha...you get the idea. Boring, boring, boring).

Dopesmoker. Electric Wizard are the less interesting version of Sleep.

ambitious circa 1998-2000 albums that were kind of ignored when they came out, but have gone on to get extra life as culty, significant, genre-defining phenomenon passed around through word of mouth (and internet), reaching lots of dilletantes and outsiders in the process.

poxyfuzak (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 15 March 2009 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

not saying it pejoratively, btw. just kind of a similar stature for a metal album

poxyfuzak (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 15 March 2009 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

the thing i like about Dopesmoker is that, when you get to the end of it, the riff has become an integral part of your mindspace, impossible to shake. You've become more riff than man. And really, doesn't that make it the destination to which humanity has been heading since our forefathers created the very first riff? Is that not the ultimate goal?
