'War in Peace' for me, seems like it lasts a lot longer than 4 minutes though

vain_bowers, Thursday, 5 March 2009 08:51 (sixteen years ago)

I just pulled this back out after a long while, so I'm gonna have to give it a couple of fully engaged listens before I vote. "Diana" has always been a favorite, though.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 March 2009 08:53 (sixteen years ago)

Grey/afro sounds like it was recorded inside a washing machine

vain_bowers, Thursday, 5 March 2009 09:02 (sixteen years ago)

"Weighted down"

Mark G, Thursday, 5 March 2009 09:30 (sixteen years ago)

"broken heart". could be anything though. i still remember how none of them really seemed like songs when i first heard it, but they're like standards now

schlump, Thursday, 5 March 2009 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

"Diana" sticks with me the most of these, I'll go with it.

war in peace

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 5 March 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

one of the best records ever so it's an arbitrary choice, but right now at this very moment i vote for "cripple creek."

ian, Thursday, 5 March 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

"Broken Heart" is nice and from the outtakes "Keep It Under Your Hat."

whisperineddhurt, Thursday, 5 March 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

Listening to this again only made it harder. I was prepared to vote "Diana," but now it's about a five-way tie.

i still remember how none of them really seemed like songs when i first heard it, but they're like standards now

^^^this.

War In Peace still scares the shit out of me

ecuador_with_a_c, Friday, 6 March 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

and the All Come to Meet Her calms me down

ecuador_with_a_c, Friday, 6 March 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

One of these polls where I have to vote for the first song on the album. When I hear "Little Hands" I settle in for the ride.

Trip Maker, Friday, 6 March 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

I think polling the tribute album might be interesting. I'd vote for the same song in that.

little hands vs war in peace vs grey/afro

dmr, Friday, 6 March 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)

grey/afro: will never win. i love this record but grey/afro kind of begins the descent into underwatery bonus snippets for me, just because it's kind of hard to distinguish between songs, loses the rhythm of the lp slightly.

i like the story about them chasing up skip when the tribute record came out, asking for some lyrics for the booklet, and him saying, so the album i recorded thirty years ago in a week in nashville in my pyjamas ... you want me to remember the lyrics for it?

schlump, Friday, 6 March 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

Wikipedia says he was listening to the tribute album on his deathbed...not sure how much of that I believe.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 6 March 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

i think that's about right chronologically; he was in hospital while they were finishing it, so they were going back and forth trying to get lyrics, keep him updated etc. apparently he was really touched. this maybe doesn't have the connotations of him lying on his deathbed choosing to listen to it. but ahh maybe it does + that's pretty nice too.

Hendrixy guitar is great on the Diesel Park West one

Going right now to listen to all the songs that got no votes, just to smugly say to myself, "ILX don't know shit."
