Hey does anyone remember when bono did his ziggy stardust alter-ego, calling himself mcphisto, putting on bad makeup and wearing horns....

why is that embarassing bono moment never discussed to further deride U2 fans????

...ziggy stardust alter-ego...
Oh, I thought that was his Chris Gaines alter-ego.

does anyone remember Axl Rose yelling "Gimme Some Regaae" during Welcome to the Jungle or one of those songs? I remember he did that a lot on that tour with Metallica where he wore a cather's uniform most of the time...

dude, that was bono's best moment - "Did you come here to play Jesus?/ I did."

How can you tell it's an Anton Corbijn photo? When you're not immediately sure if you're looking at U2 or Depeche Mode.

Or a really shit line-up of the Magic Band.

I remember reading that it was largely the idea of Bono's buddy (and former Virgin Prune) Gavin Friday....a man well-prone to ill-advised theatrics. That said, Friday's debut solo album, EACH MAN KILLS THE THING HE LOVES is spectacular...in a sort've tortured noirish torch song sorta way.

Anton Corbijn's main contribution to rock-band photography: "It strikes me that the members of the band could theoretically stand at different distances from the camera."

(That's not meant to be snarky as I love Corbijn, particularly the Bunnymen stuff, and used to have his Joy Division subway shot as a practically life-sized blowup poster.)

Oh, I dearly love him too. But he certainly makes those two bands look interchangeable. ;-)

Steve K asked: "does anyone remember Axl Rose yelling "Gimme Some Regaae" during Welcome to the Jungle or one of those songs? I remember he did that a lot on that tour with Metallica where he wore a catcher's uniform most of the time... "

Man, I completely remember that....and cringe-worthy it was. I saw that tour as well (the G'n'R/Metallica stadium tour) and remember being struck by the sheer number of times Axl changed his costume. I mean, that seems perfectly fine for someone like Cher or Liza Minelli to do, but it's not very rock'n'roll, I don't think. Considering how street-tough the Gunners used to portray themselves, to have their lead singer swanning offstage to change into some other ridiculous getup or another (be it the catcher's outfit, the kilt, the bike shorts, the 'charlie don't surf' t-shirt, the entirely-too-obvious NIN or Jane's Addiction shirts, the biker bondage Rob Halford hat, the furry pimp coat) seems a bit too fashion-conscious.

Axl Rose is a fuckin' piece a shit, tho. Fuckin poser.

Fave Bono putdown story: Supposedly, whenever Bono is acting up in the studio, Adam and Larry turn to him and ask "Ey...Bono...are we stealin' it back?"
Because the whole "Charles Manson Stole This Song From The Beatles..." line was so pompous, even BONO cringes when he hears it.

But enough about that. I've never understood why ILM has such a hard-on for U2. I frankly love their music. And, yes, I know Bono is a pretentious asshole. But he's an amusing pretentious asshole. Every time he opens his mouth, out comes something memorably bad.
Well, I've got to go away now...and dream it all up again. Goodnight...
You rock'n'roll doggies.

Lord Custos X, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm.. don't know anyone like that on ILM, nope.
