Even more than Cage, that Vancouver Landscape soundscape was THE track that got me taking in "silence" to plumb the heretofore unperceived musical structures all around us. Given how inspiring those 2 or 3 minutes have been, I don't think it's going against the spirit of Murray Schafer's work to ask if anyone has a copy of The Vancouver Soundscape 1973 to share...

The worst for me is definitely the Peter Brotzmann Octet cut. It may work ambiently in its original context. But here I find it waaaaaaay too jarring although I embrace the inclusion of "I Heard Her Call My Name" probably because it sounds like a faraway place (but then how could Lou hear her call his name?).

"Dub Fi Gwan", "Boat Woman Song" or "Black Satin". This is an awesome comp (and book.) I have the second volume as well which is not quite as good. Volume Three OTOH has always looked awesome.

amazing comp, got it from the dusty back room at my old record store job -- black satin edges out dub fi gwan

Forgot about "Faraway Chant". That's awesome too obv.

i don't agree. the the Vancouver Soundscape-Howler Monkeys-Brotzmann segue works perfectly as is here--it's definitely one of the highlights of the comp, imo. and i don't even like the original "Machine Gun" all that much in its "proper" contecxt (to get get all Hongrorian on yr ass).

went with the Hassell track, nonetheless--viva Possible Musics.

51 SBs and there's nothing on (Ioannis), Saturday, 7 March 2009 14:28 (fifteen years ago) link

OK so how does it work perfectly?

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 7 March 2009 14:34 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a seamless segue, regardless of the disparate "musical" furniture being tossed around, is all i'm saying.

The beach boys track => most surprising thing on there?

Really this compilation sounds nice, and it proposes a good idea for a 'model' listener.

It would be nice to get behind it...shame on me and my hangups.

"The beach boys track => most surprising thing on there?"

Not if you've read the book, really.

I have but it was years and years ago.
