This may have been done before, but i can't seem to find it. I pretty much love him on every guest track I've heard him on, but didn't like the singles I'd heard from the last album. where do i go for more? how's that album with method man?

dave k, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

feel free to discuss the harvard movie too, and whether or not it's a better harvard movie than either 'soul man' or that one with joe pesci as the homeless guy.

dave k, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

search his first and third lps, "Whut! Thee Album" and "Muddy Waters"

bc, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Blackout" with Meth is exactly as good as you think it is, though not much better. Of course that still means it's phenomenal. throw ya triple-beam up!!

<< but didn't like the singles I'd heard from the last album. >>

excuse me? Let's Get Dirty and Smash Sumthin'? c'mawn! instant classics, both.

al, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Redman classic is Time 4 Sum Aksion from his debut album. I don't think any of his albums are all that. The greatest-hits will be pretty cool, though. Or rather, a Def Squad compilation.

JoB, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Yo, where my Wall Street niggaz, if ya up in the stands
Go - oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh!
To my women that'll throw they hands against they punk-ass man
Go - oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh!
Yo, if you never been shot or stabbed
Brick City go - oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh!"

on the De La song called, yes, "Ooh Ooh"

Tracer Hand, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Redman and Method Man are unequivocally the best guest acts ever - Tracer yr so right about "Oooh" - but also their stuff on Missy's "Dog In Heat" is high quality too.

Otherwise, agreed re Blackout! and Redman's singles generally.

I like Time 4 Some Aksion, Green Island, Cosmic Slop and Rated R. There's probably more but not listened to him for ages.

I like his verse on "Cereal Killer" on the Blackout album.

phil-two, Sunday, 2 February 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I like all of his stuff, but the earlier records are a bit more consistent. Malpractice was, on the whole, a good album.. I suggest ripping, deleting the absurd amount of skits, and burning your own mix- as the actual songs (when you find them... this is the most skit-polluted album I've heard in recent memory) are great. I believe most if not all of that album was produced by Adam F, which kinda blows my mind for some reason.

I was going to Buck-we-romes, cellular phones
Doc-Meth back in the flesh, blood and bone

in no zone, when I, grab the broom
moon-walk platoon hawk my goons spark

right behind on the boss
Haters don't touch, weigh us both up
now my neighbor doped up
got the cable hooked up. All channels
lift my shirt all Mammal
you ship off keys and we ship Grand Pianos.

New Jersey loses out on tax revenue as residents like Reggie Noble, the rapper known as Redman, buy fireworks in Pennsylvania.

what is Redman looking up at? is he just excitedly picturing the Flower Power fireworks soaring into the sky before gloriously exploding in a dazzling onslaught of colour and noise?

NJ is missing out on a lot of revenue -- Redman alone accounts for 12% of Pennsylvania's fireworks sales.

her one solo album from 1997 is on streaming in the us. not a lost classic or anything, but very much worth a nostalgic revisit. hard to hear her now as anything except a lowkey pioneer.

Dare Iz A Darkside is generally well-respected but I’d still say massively underrated, I’d put it in the top 5 rap albums of the 90s easily. East Coast beats, west coast G-funk + occasional dub style basslines but often sounding like they were run through some kind of off-kilter sub-bass transformer first, a pretty deep lo-fi haze enveloping the whole thing, some truly bonkers verses with Redman always jumping all around the beat from different parts of the measure…one of the first rap albums I ever picked up and still find something new every time, it’s not one where you’ll start reciting all the verses after seven listens, you can definitely get into it the first or second time through but it still reveals itself over a longer period of time than most albums from that era.

Slim is an Alien, Saturday, 7 December 2024 16:21 (ten months ago)

both his first two albums have some incredible highlights, loved them both madly at the time.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Saturday, 7 December 2024 16:29 (ten months ago)

slim otm. in terms of beats, both that and muddy watersare definitely some of my favorite albums of the 90s. he was really good at synthesizing queens with lbc. "pick it up" from muddy waters will get at least a few oldheads on the floor, guaranteed: just that irresistible bass heavy 88bpm-ish thump groove.

one thing i really loved about the def squad scene was erick sermon's style kind of rubbed off on everyone, so by the time he was moving on to something different redman had completely usurped him and moved into his own thing completely. stuff like "bobyahed2dis" and "can't wait" always felt more like midwest sounds to me because those beats were so fluid. full disclosure: i had at the time, and still very much do now though not quite as intense, a big desire to hear folks from warren g's crew over beats like "pick it up" and "whateva man."

erick sermon's "rockafella" remix beat got a short interlude on the album, but that bassline deserves a few verses:
