I am pretty sure tcq is better and I hope dls wins

iatee, Sunday, 8 March 2009 09:07 (sixteen years ago)

I adore Tribe, but De La have recorded far more amazing albums.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 8 March 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

I'm much more of a Tribe fan, though De La have certainly had their moments as well.

ilxor, Sunday, 8 March 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

The Low End Theory is like the pinnacle of any music recorded ever. So tribe. Stakes Is High is great tho.

Exactly. What ^ said.

odd, i would say the same thing but reverse the positions of de la and tribe in that post

De La: first, greater impact, better albums, more creative production, longer career, more consistency, more interesting MCs, more interesting concepts, awesome skits, etc etc etc

i'm surprising myself by how strongly i feel de la soul is the superior group in every way.

It might not be, but it certainly felt like it when I first got into them.

Terius (The Reverend), Sunday, 8 March 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)

helgeson couldn't be more wrong on every one of his points but one: de la did come first. I don't think you can compare length of career as Tribe died because of label crap.

pipecock, Monday, 9 March 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know, i think i make some pretty good points, def OTM

I think longevity/consistency's a fair criteria to hand to De La because I don't think Tribe were (or would've been) as strong on album no. 5 or album no. 8, etc. as DLS have been.

Diddyocracy (some dude), Monday, 9 March 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

"awesome skits"

H3LP, Monday, 9 March 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

De La totally on top of this, for the reasons M@tt listed. Basically there is more high quality De La than there is high quality Tribe, so they win. Tribe have like two and a half good albums. De La have at least three (and that's being stingy to the post-Prince Paul material, none of which I own but some of which is pretty good), and they haven't put out anything as horrible as Tip's post-Tribe stuff.

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 9 March 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

De La has three really top-quality members (not counting Prince Paul), Tribe has like one and a half. Low End Theory is great but it isn't really the headfuck that those first three De La albums are. And I give points for headfuckery.

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 9 March 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

^^ better then any tribe song ever

H3LP, Monday, 9 March 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

I got to see them together back in '94 and De La Soul was better live. I'll use that as my tiebreaker.

GHOOOOOOOST WEEEEEEEEEEEED!

yeah shakey OTM, at the time De La seemed so out of step, I remember seeing "Potholes in My Lawn" with a weird lo-budget b&w video on Yo MTV Raps...wheras when I heard Tribe they seemed to just be another thing in the world that De La created for me.

straight up, you're payin' jacks just to hear me phase (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 9 March 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

I don't understand the dissing of Tip's post tribe albums. Both Amplified and the new one have awesome jams on them. Tip and ASM were awesome producers on their own and were visionary enough to recruit Dilla to help with their last 2 records. It's no diss to De La whom I love dearly but Tribe were too close to perfect to lose in any poll to any hiphop group.

pipecock, Monday, 9 March 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

I can't think of a single De La album I dislike as much as I dislike The Love Movement and there is at least one I like as much as The Low End Theory (De La Soul is Dead). Plus, I've seen them twice.

Still very tempted to vote Tribe, though.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

i once walked behind Posdnuos and his girlfriend/wife on the Rambla in Barcelona. Can the same be said for Q-Tip? I think not.

Blackout Crew are the Beatles of donk (jim), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

how much did ASM do in Tribe, really? Everything I've heard/read has indicated that it was Tip actually doing the majority of the production.

RE: Tip's post Tribe output - Q-Tip did a song with the Korn guy. end of story.

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

Tribe were too close to perfect to lose in any poll to any hiphop group.

woah see there's a lot of groups i would put over them, personally.

q-tip's solo shit doesn't really seem relevant this poll

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

honestly Tribe should lose just for Phife's incredibly lame rhymes on the first album (his improvement between the first and second records is pretty phenomonal, points for that)

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

I think the biggest thing ATCQ have on De La is more charismatic rappers. That and the existence of The Low End Theory.

The-Reverend (rev), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

the second AOI album and The Grind Date are much better, more rewarding "mature" hip-hop than ATB's last two.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

voted tribe but i dont begrudge anyone voting dls at all

iatee, Monday, 9 March 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, these are both awesome and you cannot go wrong. I voted for De La by comparing the first three records head to head. De La takes #1 and #3 (Buhloone Mindstate by a huge margin) and Tribe wins #2 by a decent margin, but that's 2 against 1, you cannot fuck with the math here.

Euler, Monday, 9 March 2009 19:44 (sixteen years ago)

3 (Buhloone Mindstate by a huge margin)

lolz lot of people on this thread arguing for MM over LET but like you I think those folks are nuts

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

low end theory doesn't just walk all over De la soul is dead! just cus people like to recite all the words to scenario and shit.

H3LP, Monday, 9 March 2009 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i was gonna say. De La Soul is Dead is probably the best album of all the albums relevant to this poll.

Buhoone Mindstate is dope too.

Actually, the first 3 jungle brothers are nothing to sneeze at either.

straight up, you're payin' jacks just to hear me phase (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

buhloone is my fav de la record but its one of those personal things

51 SBs on my dresser, yessir (deej), Monday, 9 March 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

Actually, the first 3 jungle brothers are nothing to sneeze at either.

haha yeah in a Native Tongues poll I would probably vote the J Beez over everybody

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 9 March 2009 20:05 (sixteen years ago)

De La Soul Is Dead is great but it's funny, if it had come out in 1990 it would have fit in better with the landscape at the time as I understood it; Cypress Hill was such a monument in 1991 that it kinda overshadowed everything else for me that year (I think both came out that summer).

Euler, Monday, 9 March 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

becoming less sure that tribe is gonna win this

both have 3 perfect albums but tribes 4th and 5th were better than de las 4th and 5th.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 30 April 2009 08:00 (sixteen years ago)

Tribe has 2 perfect albums, De La I could go as high as 5.

Full Metal Slanket (Oilyrags), Thursday, 30 April 2009 10:14 (sixteen years ago)

3 max. after buhloone/thinking they didnt need prince paul anymore they started to get less interesting.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 30 April 2009 11:35 (sixteen years ago)

I freely admit I probably overrate the Plugs. But I don't see the beef with Beatminerz and Dilla production at all.

Full Metal Slanket (Oilyrags), Thursday, 30 April 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

Went to Carvel to get a milk shake
This honey ripped me off of my loot case
The car oh yeah there's money in my jacket
Somebody broke into my ride and cold macked it
Yo tip I tell you man the devil's trying it
But I'm goin to stay strong cause I ain't bying it
Tonight I'm taking Sherry out
I don't have jack to wear
You know I've got to look dipped in the freshest gear
Cool I found something so I ironed it
I think I caught up on the phone
Oh shit I'm trying it
Will someone tell me what did I do to deserve this?
I think I'll pull out my super ? and serve this
My little brother wants Barney, cool I'm getting it
Took him down to Kay-Bee, they ain't sellin it
Here we go with the crying, yo he's throwing fits
My blood pressure blowing up, I can't take this shit
Finally got what he wanted now he's good to go
Again the robers smashed, were's my radio?
One time the car was in the shop I had to borrow see...
They had no mercy on the car oh you he'll kill me
Where the hell can Nicki be? I'm goin to smack her up
I got the tickets for the Knicks and she cold stood me up
I need to hit a hunny off yo drill pas me the phone
Pulled out my hooker hoes, oh yo Sheela's home
Steady smiling like a mother yo I'm wrecked to bone
Went down on hun, she's in the red zone
Stressed out more than one could ever be
Forever trying to clear the sample for my new LP
With all these trials and tribulations yo I've been affected
And to top it off, Starks got ejected
Refrain
Verse Two: Phife Dawg
Just last week my girl was stressing me
Now her best friend be underssing me
Well I was lovin her by the moon lit
Now I'm tricking on her like Kinte'
Bought a bag of izm from the smoke shop
Walking towards the car, here come the damn cops
Now I'm station bound for the thai sticks
I bought it for my man, I don't believe this shit
Coach sat me down from the ball team
Cause I was breakin niggaz on the inseams
Some niggas cross town was trying to stick me
All I had was shorts, a dollar fifty
Picked up this gir in the hoopty
Just because of her rhymes she tried to soup me
Pay for this and pay for that loot for nails and hair
Who the hell do you think I am, Mr. Belvedere?
Go and get a bloddy job then can we look cute
Even if you get me boots, you'll neva see my loot
She wasn't even all of that just anothe hooker
Took the journey that ass way, quick like Chucky Booker
Sometimes you got put the hoes in their freakin place
Just move from in front me with your botty face!

not shocked since i feel like De La historically has always gotten more enthusiasm on ilm than Tribe. i voted for Tribe but really this is one of those situations where you can't lose.

de la released more solid albums, and didn't fall off like the flawed last coupla Tribe album (which i like, but which are flawed). but i prefer the first three Tribe albums over all the de la albums.

book are awesome. this is like, what's tastier, curry or pizza??

Still an amazing title for a song.

Exactly the reason why Tribe deserves to have won. :-(
