really, no thread for these guys?...I thought of them indirectly tonite, when I played the Oedipussy LP for the first time in ages...(the Phil Parfitt thing what has Jason Pierce and Terry Bickers on it)...and it holds up nicely, it does...too late now, but I think I'll be digging out Heaven Scent LP for a spin tomorrow...(ugh, that is kind of an REO Speedwagon on 4AD title, innit?)

Not true. The Spacemen 3/Spz connection helps, as does the Breeders connection.

I think I had a 12" of this band once. It didn't leave much of an impression. Looking at discogs, I can't even identify from the sleeves what record I had, but the fact that they had Josephine Wiggs in them does ring a bell.

What Ned said. I own most of these albums. Probably listen to Up more than any of the others.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:13 (sixteen years ago)

Only had Up but never really listened to it. At the time I was always somewhat unreasonably disappointed that they didn't bring quite as much sonic disruption along as Spacemen 3 did. Was thinking about them the other day though when I was listening to the House of Love (the new Live At The BBC disc). Was enjoying the whole Velvetsy strut and bustle of the HoL's more uptempo stuff and was wondering if maybe I'd appreciate the Perfect Disaster more now. Would that be a fair point of comparison?

Might as well use this thread to mention that the AFAIK way-out-of-print Honey Tongue album as well as the Josephine Wiggs Experience album -- both of which are essentially Wiggs and Jon Mattock -- are completely underrated gems. I still can't believe I was able to luck into a copy of the former.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:29 (sixteen years ago)

xxpost totally...The Perfect Disaster even embraced "baggy" (check out "Mood Elevators", from Heaven Scent, which otherwise has some really beautiful moments...

I lumped them in with The House of Love back in the day, and I'm surprised time hasn't treated them better, especially given the plethora of other (bigger) bands that they're connected to...

xpost: that Honey Tongue CD is another of those that I didn't pick up in the used bin when I came across it...regrets, I've had a few...

I'll shout out for the Dusty Trails album (which is Wiggs and Vivian Trimble). Supposedly, there's another album with Mattock in the works.

Also, seems like there's some new music at http://www.josephinewiggs.com/

one year passes...

I just found the self-titled debut, the Bluebell EP and Hey Hey Hey EP! On first blush it sounds really good. I think I'll try to cobble together a best-of, I think they'll be well served by a choice 20 tracks or so.

Saw them in 1984 when they supported Nico at the Venue in London (now an Ask pizza joint).

Was interested enough to later pick up the self-titled debut (now long lost from my collection)

Does anyone have MP3s of the Architects Of Disaster single, "Cucumber Sandwich" b/w "Friendly Fire"? Also missing a few stray b-sides if anyone's got 'em.

I'm late to the party but Phil Parfitt released a solo album a few years back and it's fantastic:

It's a bit less VU and more acoustic+strings sounding but lyrically he's at the top of his game.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 30 March 2017 18:26 (eight years ago)

Neat!

Also, Josephine Wings did the soundtrack for this little documentary about the mid-century modern houses on Cape Cod called "Built On Narrow Land" that is worth a watch/hear...

I like the song. And the artwork!

They desperately need to reissue their first couple of albums, hidden gems they are!
