Chelsea morning by Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66.

Journey - "Don't Stop Believing" (that one's actually good in some ways...)
Berlin - "Take My Breath Away" (cheesy in the best way!)

Lord Custos X, Starship's exactly the kind of tune I had in mind.

the Wham and Joan Jett tracks are disqualified based on being too quality (or at least the Wham is too lightly whimsical to hit true cheese - see next post)

Paul, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how could I forget... Europe - "The Final Countdown" (ultimate in cheese!!!)

Paul, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Laibach covers of "Live is Life" and "Final Countdown"
This may not be on the wavelength Paul is aiming at, but...
I discovered a CD called Shut Up Kitty with a bunch of industrial covers of all kinds of pop (Beatles, Madonna) and it is 70 minutes of the ripest velveeta. The growling industrial vocal style kept killing what would've been interesting music.

Lord Custos X, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan Partridge listened to "Gaudete" while chatting up women in his car (an outtake from I'm Alan Partridge featured on the video release) = definition of thread title obviously

indeed we should list every song featured in that series: Mike Oldfield's "Portsmouth", Wings' "Jet", Blue Mink's "Melting Pot", Queen's "Killer Queen", Hot Chocolate's "It Started With A Kiss", the theme from Black Beauty, "kommen Sie bitte and listen to Kraftwerk ..."

"that album Bruce Willis once made" is "The Return of Bruno" and it is perhaps the greatest recording ever issued on Motown Records.

"Trying too hard, unsubtle, and inauthentic. Specifically that which is unsubtle or inauthentic in its way of trying to elicit a certain response from a viewer, listener, audience, etc. Celine Dion is cheesy because her lyrics, timbre, key changes, and swelling orchestral accompaniment telegraph 'i want you to be moved' instead of moving you."

Unsubtle, SURE. But "inauthentic"? I don't think Celine Dion is cheesy because she truly is gifted.

I suppose stuff like "Macarena" and "The Ketchup Song". And most of all "Agadoo".
