Unfortunately, and disappointingly, don't know a lot of these. "Capt. Groovy & His Bubblegum Army" ftw.

Free the Northampton 1 (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

seconding captain groovy, just because... CAPTAIN GROOVY.

WEREWOLF CONGRESS (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

"Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" always seems really annoying until you actually listen to it, when it's greatness is revealed

Half of these are on the greatest bubblegum comp of all time: 25 All-Time Bubblegum Greats or whatever it's called.

Really love that Rare Breed song, incredible organ riff.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

Yummy Yummy Yummy is the bomb, but you can still hear it on oldies radio. I voted for the DeFrancos because you never hear them anymore.

It's between Yummy Yummy Yummy & Indian Giver for me, but that's because I only know those 2!

Oh and the Partridge Family I guess, but not voting for that.

I think I only know Will You Be Staying After Sunday? by The Peppermint Rainbow. Good song.

Who's the mysterious 'Keith'?

You don't know "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)"?

Oh crap yeah obv I do know that one. Didn't see it.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

OH GOD, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

CANNOT DECIDE,. THEY'RE AAAAALLLLLL TOO GOOD.

Captain Groovy is indeed, GROOOOOVY but I love Alice Long and I love Knock Three Times and I love Yummy Yummy and Tracy and Love Grows...

Ah, I'm gonna have to go for Jam Up And Jelly Tight, I think.

But... isn't Grooviest Girl In the World by the Fun N Games on this one, or is that on volume two? Because that's the straight up winner of the universe when it comes to bubblegum.

GOD I LOVE THIS STUFF, GONNA DIG OUT MY OHIO EXPRESS AND 1910 FRUITGUM CO RECORDS NOW.

"Jam Up And Jelly Tight" <--- almost got my vote

Cpt Groovy & His Bubblegum Army is massive. Joey Levine on vocals, glitteresque backing chants/shouts and a screaming acid rock guitar solo all over the outro.

Indian Giver hands down.

I worship bubblegum but a good half of these tracks are godawful. I've never heard a entirely satisfying collection of the stuff usually because the compilers feel compelled to include bland, schmaltzy, or worse teen idol cuts (by Keith, Jefferson, Bobby, blech) or because the requisite classics are not necessarily the best, e.g. "Yummy Yummy Yummy" is more the Platonic Ideal of bubblegum than an actually great song ("Mercy Mercy" and, esp., "Chewy Chewy" cut it).

I went for "Indian Giver" just edging out "Love Grows..." Mark Gutkowski was THE great bubblegum singer (if indeed it was really him singing). His vocals made it clear that there was as much at stake in bubblegum as any Stax single you care to name. Just listen to the ache as he sings "gee what love can do" in "Goody Goody Gumdrops" or the betrayal in "oh yeah that's what you said!" here. They hurt so good.

And does that supperclubby Peppermint Rainbow horror really count as bubblegum?

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 22:56 (sixteen years ago)

Voted for Keith

Keith, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

Is there a Jefferson or Shannon ilxor?

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

XXpost. It's true that these collections always include some schmaltz. But I'm not as hard line as you. Other than the fact that it's a much better song, is Love Grows much different in form, sound and delivery than Will You Be Staying After Sunday?

everything, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 23:56 (sixteen years ago)

I had to listen to this today to make sure. "Yummy" wins out pretty handily (it just defines bubblegum: Joey Levine! That plonking piano! Those haphazard b-vox!) over "Love Grows," "Alice Long," "Indian Giver," "Sunshine Games," "Capt. Groovy" and even, god help me, "Abergavenny."

There's no need to listen to Vol. 2--"Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" by a mile.

Hideous Lump, Friday, 13 March 2009 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

Other than the fact that it's a much better song, is Love Grows much different in form, sound and delivery than Will You Be Staying After Sunday?

Yes. Formwise, "Sunday" doesn't have that key change that lifts the last verse of "Love Grows" into the stratosphere. Soundwise, "Love Grows" is much less of a Wall of Supperclub. More instruments come to the fore in the mix, esp. the chug of the guitar making it much more suitable for dancing than consuming Porterhouse steaks and a gallon of Tom Collins. And actually, because of its sound, the song's form comes more to the fore as well. Deliverywise, Tony Burrows has those bubblegum blues. The Poopermint Rainbow have indigestion (if you listen closely, there's a barely audible belch as the song fades out).

And "Love Grows" is a much better song.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

The liner notes on these 3 comps are fascinating--lots of weird little facts. Such as:

- The lead singer on Crazy Elephant's "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'", Robert Spencer, was also the lead singer of the Cadillac's 1956 doo wop hit "Speedo"

- Edison Lighthouse "It's Up to You, Petula": Engineered by Martin Rushent

Hideous Lump, Monday, 23 March 2009 01:00 (sixteen years ago)

I think you must have read those liner notes wrong. Surely the lead singer on "Speedo" was Earl "Speedo" Carroll. Google is telling me this other guy showed up post-Speedo.

I kinda questioned this, but that's what the liner notes say. On the other hand, they spell the song title "Speedoo," so they're really starting to lose my trust in the accuracy department.

OK, so I'll give you a substitute piece of trivia from an entirely different CD's liner notes:

- On the first two [Tony Orlando and] Dawn singles "Candida" and "Knock Three Times," Dawn were Ellie Greenwich and "Candida" co-writer Toni Wine.

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 00:45 (sixteen years ago)

i'm disappointed with the zero vote on tracy. can't blame anyone though since the other options are great also.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 06:14 (sixteen years ago)

I thought about voting for that but I went for Tony Burrows over Ron Dante. But it was close.

moe greene dolphin street (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

And the Dawn trivia, that I believe. Did you also know that Toni Wine sang the parts of both Betty and Veronica on The Archies's "Sugar Sugar"?

Oh yeah, her official website reminds me that she goes out on tour singing with Tony Orlando these days.
