Music That Didn't Melt Your Brain....or Compilations That Do Not Suck

Last week, I'd just won a batch of free music, and one of the discs was the "Tomb Raider" soundtrack. Never seen the film, as I don't need Angelina Jolie's chest bouncing in my face. However, the soundtrack is fairly good, esp. the tracks by Fluke, the Chemicals and NIN. To say I was surprised puts it mildly. (I've bought a few in my life that I would rather use to prop up the door.)

How about it, then? What music have you bought/received that you didn't believe was a waste of technology?

?

seems like an impossibly broad question. how about every piece of music I have ever liked?

Actually, I left the question broad for that reason: not everyone will like the same artist, will they?;> Compilations are usually more miss-than-hit, and I thought it was rare that you come across a decent one.

A "best comp" thread was done here recently. I say Rough Trade's Wanna Buy A Bridge before anyone beats me to it again.

REPO MAN. Juicy Bananas' "Bad Man" is a ten-years-too-late Blaxploitation theme classic and the Plugz' Mexi-surf score is awesome beyond belief. Oh yeah plus there's "TV Party" and an Iggy Pop song wif Steve Jones on guitar. That helps.

Repo Man is a good answer. The Midnight Cowboy soundtrack is great as is the soundtrack to the movie made about Blue Note a few years back.

Rushmore soundtrack, Rhino's '70s punk compilations, Ghost World soundtrack. Back in January 2000 Uncut had this free 'best of the 20th century' compilation that I listened to a lot for a while, but I doubt I'll ever put it on again. Free CDs with magazines are usually one or two good tracks mixed with a lot of random crap.

A fucking GRATE mix CD is Baz Lehrman's "Something for Everybody". It's just this spectacularly kitsch, pop mix up full of amazing tunes and weird cover-versions : Highlights include an acid house Age of Aquarius,

a funky Benjamin Brittan setting of lyrics from Shakespear's Midsummer Night's Dream, which is then given a Bhangra remix!

An operatic rendition of When Doves Cry

Doris Day

Remixes of 30's big band tunes from Strictly Ballroom

Sunscreen (of course)

And loads more. Its way better than the Moulon Rouge soundtrack.

Any of the Nuggets or Pebbles compilations. Particularly the Pebbles Chicago compilation.

MTV's "AMP" compilation is a pretty good snapshot of the 'electronica' explosion of the 90s, or at least what MTV told us it was. most of the classics represented.

i'll second "Wanna Buy A Bridge", and add the "Blues Live At The 1956 Newport Folk Festival Vol. 2" on Vanguard Recs, which is sort of a comp because it has different people on it.

With all due respect to Phil, that Baz Luhrman compilation sounds like a crime against humanity. (It's still quite possibly better than the Moulin Rouge sdtk, however.)

Oh, and two I love are the Wipeout XL "soundtrack" and PC and Strictly's Blech, both on Warp

For someone who knows NOTHING about northern soul whatsoever, I found the Best Northern Soul All-Nighter comp absolutly fantastic - lots of cool soul sounds! No doubt it's old hat for those in the know, but I thought it was pretty good.

Rhino's "Poptopia" series is easily the best compilation series ever.
