Vanilla Ice apologizes

It's all apparently part of a campaign (rightmusicwrongs.org, launched by Virgin) to further vilify one hit wonders and manufactured pop, and to promote "real" music. I can't go into the website cause my old browser won't allow me (apparently there is a list of the top 10 worst offenders), but the whole thing reeks of of rockism and condescendence.

daavid, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 08:44 (sixteen years ago)

haha Rob trying to act there.

still a great song, of course.

Ludo, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 09:29 (sixteen years ago)

In a world awash with silicone and botox, where stars are prefabricated on 'reality' TV, where lip-syncing is normal and real singing is a special event, something has gone dangerously and desperately wrong with music. It's time to take a stand. It's time to right music. To make it real again.

Luka ModReq (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 09:52 (sixteen years ago)

Some music festivals showcase the latest reality pop sensations. Not the V Festival.

Luka ModReq (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 09:54 (sixteen years ago)

To make it real again.

By believing an advertising campaign by a huge corporation?

snoball, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 09:59 (sixteen years ago)

He needs to apologize for apologizing.

it's cute, but i'm more sad just that these dudes would shit on their own legacy for a buck, even if it's obv. that everyone is in on the joke

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

The only language these cunts understand is ignoring their shitty marketing campaign so I'm afraid I'm out.

Monkey SBanner (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

I can't believe an artist like Vanilla Ice would compromise his legacy just for filthy lucre, Whiney. No way.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

oh yeah, I can totally see that as a "look what I hath wrought" moment

The-Reverend (rev), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

You know it's funny, you can listen to "Ice Ice Baby" and hear how Vanilla is kind of a stiff rapper with not the best flow in the world, and doesn't always hit the beat.

Like how the "light up the stage/wax a chump like a candle" double time stuff is all over the fucking place. Or "naw... I rolled by" is just this hurried out of breath line that's like in another tempo.

And I wonder if this actually HELPED him gain success with the song because it sounded so weird. and people who didn't know a lot of rap took "shitty" for "unique."

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, i dunno, then again i had been listening to rap for two years at that point and LOVED "Ice Ice Baby"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

supposedly Ice was pretty well-respected as a battle rapper in Dallas pre-fame

The-Reverend (rev), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 19:09 (sixteen years ago)

Like "Ice Ice Baby" is a dope song and all, but seriously like third tier dudes that didn't even make to MTV had better flow

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 19:19 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I agree w/ that

The-Reverend (rev), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

this is slowly turning into "lol remember when there was a music industry to have arguments about?" :-/

Roll through the ghetto pumpin Ice Ice Baby
Think I give a fuck it's better than the shit I heard lately

^^awesome who is that?

wrt to Ice, like i clowned him at the time like everyone else, and yeah he wasn't fucking with Rakim, but I hold that almost all the hate on him was jealousy that they didn't think of flipping that Queen bassline sample first.

What's that you're saying 'bout William Hung? Dude was on Arrested Development, and never got dangled by his ankles out a window by Suge Knight. RESPECT.

how was vanilla ice portrayed by the media?

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, i was a serious hip hop fan into Rakim, Eazy, Sir Mix, Run DMC, De La, whatever... but I was also 10, which probably had something to do with it.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

Vanilla Ice was more a Wrong Time Right Place kinda guy.

The crime against Ice wasn't lip-syncing per Milli Vanilli, but riff stealing, but discriminating hip-hop/R&B fans didn't give a shit. Milli Vanilli fell hard, and that was still fresh on everyone's minds. Vanilla Ice was not only a white rapper, but a white rapper with a weak argument for borrowing a popular bass riff (and he coincidentally had "Vanill" in his name somewhere, which probably didn't help lol.) He's the fall guy for the rediscovery of "Under Pressure" as far as major canonical contributions go.

If MilliVanillaGate hadn't happened, Vanilla Ice would have been lashed with faint disses, not sold nearly as much (because there wouldn't have been all that publicity), and hence be completely forgotten as part of a long forgotten line of late 80s rappers.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

"MilliVanilliGate". Hmm, maybe the word "Vanilla" had a lot more to do with it than I previously thought, in addition to accenting the "I'm a white guy" thing.

meta pro lols (libcrypt), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I remember people hating him more after IIB because he was cheesy, not because he stole the riff. The attitude (at least at my elementary school) was, "Why didn't he just admit he sampled the bassline? That's dumb" instead of "I hate him, he stole Queen's music." He had a huge hit then fell off, but it was more a Chumbawumba situation than a Milli Vanilli scandal, though Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli both made me think "WTF ok let's move on from these guys."

throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 23:00 (sixteen years ago)

"Why didn't he just admit he sampled the bassline? That's dumb" instead of "I hate him, he stole Queen's music."

Well, there definitely was both happening, but I was stating the former, primarily.

Exactly. At the time he was being made fun of by the skit comedy shows for being so cheesy. I can't remember if it was SNL or In Living Color, but one of them had a crack about "yeah you're from the street... Sesame Street". I don't think clowning him about the stolen riff became the focal point until way later when he incriminated himself on VH1 with that stupid "there's goes.. ding-ding-ding, mine goes... ding-ding-ding-TING" bit he did.

Vanilla Ice's worst crime towards music is not his music nor the fact that he ripped off Queen and David Bowie.
His biggest crime towards music is that he got millions of 12 year-olds into rap.
