"It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)" = <3

w/ sax (electricsound), Thursday, 12 March 2009 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

you should have done a poll of greatest hits minus "Sweet Dreams"

vera cheetah-lover (Stevie D), Thursday, 12 March 2009 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

I never want to hear it again!

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 12 March 2009 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

Was imagining this poll a few days ago oddly enough. 'Love is a stranger' rules all and is on MY old Eurythmics GH... where'd it go?

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 12 March 2009 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

ha was wondering the exact same thing

Love is a stranger is my fave

yeah would vote Love is a Stranger, not trying to be challopsy

One of the Most High Profile Comedy Directors of the 90s (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 12 March 2009 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

"Sweet Dreams". Because somebody made the unforgiveable crime of not including the glorious "Love Is a Stranger"

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 March 2009 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

Had no idea "It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)" was ever a single. It's no "Better To Have Lost In Love" but it'll do.

Esp. since somehow "Love Is A Stranger" and "I Could Give You (A Mirror)" seem to be absent...

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Friday, 13 March 2009 03:47 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, I'm going by Wikipedia's idea of what the British edition looks like. I forgot about "Love is a Stranger," but look, "Sexcrime"!

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 13 March 2009 03:51 (seventeen years ago)

hey, i'm not hatin'... beats the US version!

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Friday, 13 March 2009 04:03 (seventeen years ago)

THIS IS SOME DAMN FINE NEW WAVE, BITCHEZ.

I Harbour Multitudes (Bimble), Saturday, 14 March 2009 02:32 (seventeen years ago)

"Sweet Dreams," but very honorable mentions to "It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)," "Missionary Man," and especially "Here Come the Rain Again"

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

Okay I have just realized that I haven't heard "Who's That Girl" since 1983. I'd entirely forgotten this song. Wow.

I Harbour Multitudes (Bimble), Saturday, 14 March 2009 02:46 (seventeen years ago)

In the absence of "Love is a Stranger", "Here Comes the Rain Again" no contest. I would have been torn between those two. But most of these are pretty great.

LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 14 March 2009 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

Would definitely vote Love is a Stranger too (which was on my greatest hits I had as a child). Failing that, Sweet Dreams of course.

"The Miracle of Love" BLOWS

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 14 March 2009 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

bump

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 March 2009 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

How Funny!

Would still have voted "It's alright", the only one I can stand, really.

Still, though.

Mark G, Monday, 23 March 2009 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

re: You have placed a chill...

A heartfelt lyric from Annie, and a really stupid chintzy production.

When they did it on TOTP, they did it acoustically, as if to say "we made a mistake"...

Mark G, Monday, 23 March 2009 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

Looked on everyhit:

27 Eurythmics 17 Again Feb 2000

Ha ha ha. Not.

Yeah, the keyboard is pure tinsel, but not a single acoustic performance I've seen matches the original. "I Need You" excepted (and that's an intentional joke), Lennox is totally uninteresting in an acoustic context; she needs vulgar production values.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 March 2009 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

I saw her doing "Shining Light" on Woss, and "Lean on me" on RedNose.

She needs to go home, is what she needs.

Mark G, Monday, 23 March 2009 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

"I Could Give You (A Mirror)" was the b-side of the us 45 for "Sweet Dreams". hard to beat that.

still dont know what im voting for.

I can live with this.

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

I was NOT expecting "It's Alright..." to do this well.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

so i guess "beethoven" wasn't actually an american single? i remember seeing the video a lot on 120 minutes.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

by the way, thanks, guys, for directing me to the Savage videos. Having only known the clips for "You Have Placed a Chill..." and "I Need a Man," I was floored by how well-executed the Diaries of a Mad Housewife scenarios are. I wonder seriously whether Eurythmics were really video artists with musical soundtracks (that's a compliment).

The A+ synthpop duo that wanted to be a B-grade blue-eyed soul band.

bendy, Sunday, 16 May 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

That's some serious grade inflation.

Paul in Santa Cruz, Sunday, 16 May 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

I agree with everyone who thinks Love is a Stranger is their best. I was quite into the Eurythmics as a kid, and funnily LIAS was my least favourite back then. Heard it again a couple of years ago and it floored me.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Sunday, 16 May 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

love is a stranger 12" w/ "let's just close our eyes" & "monkey monkey" on the flip is a towering achievement of the 1980s

basic chanel (r1o natsume), Sunday, 16 May 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

kornrulez6969, Friday, 13 August 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

four years pass...

so odd how quickly this band in 1986 turned into wannabe arena rockers. Did any other synth duo follow this path besides Tears For Fears?

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 19 January 2015 01:23 (eleven years ago)

Duo? No, but I did just get this wonderful image in my head of Soft Cell making a big arena rock record like a synth-drenched Sticky Fingers.

campreverb, Monday, 19 January 2015 03:38 (eleven years ago)

one year passes...

I have never been a Eurythmics fan, but a couple of weeks ago I overheard "Here Comes the Rain Again" in a grocery store and it has taken up semi-permanent residence in my brain.

"You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart" is one my favourite singles of 1988

Their best stuff, including Annie Lennox material.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 5 June 2017 02:38 (eight years ago)

Such a good choice on this poll - even if LiaS was included, and despite Sweet Dreams > Touch, HCtRA is the best of everything Eurythmics had. I love the video too. I remember it coming out when I was deeply in love with the second album - I saw the video and thought, there will never be better music than this.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Monday, 5 June 2017 03:38 (eight years ago)

A lot of good songs getting zero votes though. Angel, Thorn in my Side, Who's That Girl?, Sisters Are Doing it for Themselves. These are brilliant pop numbers.

everything, Monday, 5 June 2017 04:36 (eight years ago)

Would have voted for 'Love is a Stranger'

I never really used to be much of a fan of Eurythmics, possibly due to the fact that I've heard 'Sweet Dreams' (the song) more times than I could possibly count to the point where I don't care if I never hear it again, mixed with the fact that I don't really like their later stuff. However, I now recognise Sweet Dreams (the album) and Touch (particularly the former) to be pleasant, and often quirky, electronic pop records, and wish they'd continued along that path.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Monday, 5 June 2017 17:53 (eight years ago)

savage >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 5 June 2017 17:54 (eight years ago)

Never liked 'em.

I do like "Its Alright" and her solo "Little Bird" and I don't know why those particularly.

Someone told me to check out the first album. I did. Its not all that. Yeah, the French one is good. The others range from passable to no thanks.

Mark G, Monday, 5 June 2017 18:06 (eight years ago)

Based on Savage and 1984, making a song cycle with a narrative brought out their best work.
