psb vs cocteau twins

went for CTs though tomorrow i might wish i'd gone the other way

w/ sax (electricsound), Saturday, 14 March 2009 04:49 (sixteen years ago)

When Star Time is at the top, you don't even read the rest of the list.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 05:50 (sixteen years ago)

Although now that I have, there's some great shit on there.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 05:52 (sixteen years ago)

it's gotta be the fucking bootleg series 1-3.

star time is second, but it's like.. you knoe, five CDs or whatever of stuff that you already have a lot of vs. rare/unrelease prime-dylan with great sound. so.

ian, Saturday, 14 March 2009 05:59 (sixteen years ago)

Star Time still wins just for the sequencing.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:02 (sixteen years ago)

#2 for me is Howlin Wolf

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:04 (sixteen years ago)

Describes the Cocteau Twins singles box for me.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:05 (sixteen years ago)

^i was fortunate in that i had only one of the EPs, so it was a great set for me

w/ sax (electricsound), Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:07 (sixteen years ago)

we agree on that anyway. xp

back to mono is up there. fuck a doors in concert & fuck a derrick may nonsense.

ian, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:08 (sixteen years ago)

If this list was from a magazine, I would pity the writers who had to argue about what record gets what ranking.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:12 (sixteen years ago)

Eighteen years hence, I still have the box, and not so much the other copies of the singles that kept me from buying it. Mainly because the box is easier to move.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:14 (sixteen years ago)

Cocteaus, easily. The PSB singles collection is indeed great, but more a hits comp and less its own otherworldly body of work.

ilxor, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:15 (sixteen years ago)

But it's not it's own body of work, however otherworldly. It's a box of pre-existing singles, now amazingly on CD! It seemed unamazing then, still kinda does. I want a vinyl box of all those singles.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:20 (sixteen years ago)

Whereas I think Star Time IS its own special thing. There's SO much James Brown that putting that box together had to involve some sleeve-rolling and sweat-breaking.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:23 (sixteen years ago)

Cold sweat, naturally.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:30 (sixteen years ago)

Crosby, Stills & Nash EASILY!

Star Time vs Discography

turtles all the way down (Face of Wolf), Saturday, 14 March 2009 06:54 (sixteen years ago)

I have a feeling I'd choose Back To Mono - but I've never heard it
so Star Time it is

turtles all the way down (Face of Wolf), Saturday, 14 March 2009 07:09 (sixteen years ago)

The Complete Stax/Volt singles is something important. I'm not sure if Star Time is more huge or not. PSB Discography gets listened to the most lately.

james k polk, Saturday, 14 March 2009 07:53 (sixteen years ago)

That Stax Volt box is important, yes. The fun-to-size ratio is a little off, though.

kenan, Saturday, 14 March 2009 08:01 (sixteen years ago)

Pet Shop Boys. And I love how James Brown is competing with himself here ;)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 14 March 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

Star time, easy.

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 March 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

"Star Time" will dominate here (which is totally understandable) but I'll pick "Back To Mono" over it every time.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 15 March 2009 01:20 (sixteen years ago)

Did these all actually come out in 91? Good year for comps.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 15 March 2009 01:24 (sixteen years ago)

Star Time best in theory (and probably actuality), and I gave the Pet Shop Boys' one either an A or A+ in Entertainment Weekly when it came out, but Thin Lizzy's is easily the one I play the most, so I'm voting for that.

xhuxk, Sunday, 15 March 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

As much as I love PSB Discography, the Webern box set wins this easily for me.

Paul in Santa Cruz, Sunday, 15 March 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

Commercially, the market for all kinds of compilations has probably never ever been bigger than it was at the beginning of the 90s.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 15 March 2009 21:22 (sixteen years ago)

The Atlantic R&B set came out as a series of 7 2LP sets in 1985 or '86.

WmC, Sunday, 15 March 2009 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

Voting for Dylan, btw.
