.. since she did not do a version herself (or did she ? )

You mean Dusty Springfield, I presume?
From "Dusty In Memphis"?
― Geir Hongro, Saturday, 14 March 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)
i am looking for a different version of the song - loads of people have recorded it - or at have done covers live - and i'm looking for a cover version that sounds like it could have been done by Janis Joplin
any ideas ?

i've got the Bobby Gentry one, .. but thank you for the suggestion
i am looking for a more bluesy and Janis-like rocky 70s version
My friend is convinved she had a record where Janis sang this song ...

Bobbie Gentry, sorry
― sunshinerecorder, Saturday, 14 March 2009 23:50 (sixteen years ago)
oh and i've looked at that list of course ...- that's just too many songs to check out ;-)
― sunshinerecorder, Saturday, 14 March 2009 23:51 (sixteen years ago)
Lisa Guyer is a normal bar band blues rock yeller. Her version from that list could be one. here's a sample http://discark.com/en/products/view/492/Lisa%20Guyer%20Band%20ft.%20Barry%20Goudreau/Leap%20Of%20Faith

10 years too late but this is just a case of p2p mislabel from the days of napster/limewire.
Two most popular mislabels I remember were
Janis Joplin - Son of a Preacher Man (actually dusty springfield, which doesn’t sound like a Janis song at all)
Bob Marley - Red red wine (ub40)
My brother still thinks the latter is a Marley song. I feels there more but I had to check my old cdrs with mp3s from back then.

Back in the early 2000s I knew someone who was convinced that 'Don Quixhote's Marijuana' was by The Beatles, because it was labelled as such on eDonkey. Maybe play your brother the original Neil Diamond version of 'Red Red Wine' and really blow his mind.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeJ55sUacPM

I have a reggae version of Red Red Wine that was on a 2007 Mojo cd that I just found in an old container. It's by Tony Tribe and was apparently Trojan's first big hit back in '69.
― Stevolende, Sunday, 18 November 2018 11:30 (seven years ago)
I didn’t know there were so many recorded versions of this song! (not counting post-1994 covers, when I assume it became popular again for obvious reasons)
― my guitar friend wants his money (morrisp), Sunday, 18 November 2018 22:08 (seven years ago)
IT came on this cd when i had the thing playing on the other side of the room and had me hoping tghat it wasn't the UB40 cover, seemed pretty poppy. But I guess that's not a band they would compile. THis wasa thing called cigarettes and Alcohol so covers alotof musio over a wide array of eras on the 2 subjects. Starts with Gil Scott Heron's The bottle, and does cover some really poppy stuff.UB40 were ok for at least their first lp and i couldn't remember how early their version of the song was. Or find the tracklisting since I had rearranged a few cds when it was playing.
Do wonder if the initial question here about Son Of A preacher man might be either Nancy Sinatra or Honeycone.YTHough Sinatra's version probably sounds a bit too clean to be confused with Joplin, nice version though.

I’m 99% sure it’s actually Dusty. I once downloaded it thinking it was a cover, nope, just mislabeled.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 19 November 2018 20:14 (seven years ago)
The OP seems pretty sure that it’s not Dusty, but who knows
― my guitar friend wants his money (morrisp), Monday, 19 November 2018 20:27 (seven years ago)
Amusingly, when you search Amazon Music for this song, you get the expected ton of versions... plus "Me and Bobby McGee," by Janis Joplin.
― my guitar friend wants his money (morrisp), Monday, 19 November 2018 21:03 (seven years ago)
She/he says a friend was convinced it was by Janis. Look at some of the comments in here:
https://youtu.be/shr4mGdTQno
There’s someone doing the same claim, that this mislabel comes from the limewire era... it seems there’s still people who think Janis did a version of this song. There’s a Mandela effect going on in here.

Another one where people on the comment section are convinced Janis did a version of it:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Son_of_a_Preacher_Man#Joplin
Someone in here claims it might be the Melissa Etheridge version. Fact is that Janis Joplin never recorded or performed this song.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 20 November 2018 01:02 (seven years ago)
Setlist.fm shows no indication that Janis ever performed it. Her live repertoire in 1969-1970 seems fairly limited by the available evidence.

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/americas-graffitti/imKxqRvHI7k/YU6HJ-yKFYUJ
someone named Bette posted an 18kbps WAV of Janis Joplin's "Son of a Preacher Man" (actually Dusty's version) on the Americas-Graffitti Usenet group in 2007. in this case she can probably be excused for misidentifying the singer. I wonder if she got it off Limewire.
12 users are currently sharing Janis Joplin's "Son of a Preacher Man" on slsk, and I'm pretty sure all of them are Dusty's version as well.
― ghood ghravie (unregistered), Tuesday, 20 November 2018 02:14 (seven years ago)
Anyway... I checked out a few versions of this song by artists whose names caught my eye (Skeeter Davis, Bobbie Gentry, Aretha); and while they’re all fine performances of a great song, I came away with the sense that nothing’s gonna top Dusty’s version. (...Though I haven’t listened to the other 40 covers out there, maybe one of them somehow does!)

It fills me with regret knowing that sunshinerecorder probably never got what they wanted

I'd never confuse Mavis for Janis, but maybe the og poster did?

I remember the days of wrong Napster metadata, only one that comes to mind right now is Blur - She's So High (but it's the Tal Bachman version)

YouTube also has kids doing this song at talent shows, which feels kinda wrong.

Yeah, it was one of the first songs Alice picked up on when she first discovered she could sing. We were all like, "Wow" but its way too old for her. Still is, just about...
― Mark G, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 18:12 (seven years ago)
when I got my first karaoke machine for Christmas in like 1992 or 1993, it came with a tape with four karaoke songs. "Hound Dog", "The Name Game", one other I've forgotten, and David Lee Roth version of "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody".
so Dad records himself doing the latter, and my brother and I started singing it, because the other songs were boring. I was like 12 or 13 and my brother was 10 or 11.
one day friends came over and my dad played the recording of me singing Just a Gigolo and the friends were uncomfortable until I got to the "hummabubbulazeebulabubbula" part. once I realized what the song was about i asked my folks wtf they let me sing it
