10 years too late but this is just a case of p2p mislabel from the days of napster/limewire.

Two most popular mislabels I remember were

Janis Joplin - Son of a Preacher Man (actually dusty springfield, which doesn’t sound like a Janis song at all)

Bob Marley - Red red wine (ub40)

My brother still thinks the latter is a Marley song. I feels there more but I had to check my old cdrs with mp3s from back then.

Back in the early 2000s I knew someone who was convinced that 'Don Quixhote's Marijuana' was by The Beatles, because it was labelled as such on eDonkey. Maybe play your brother the original Neil Diamond version of 'Red Red Wine' and really blow his mind.

I have a reggae version of Red Red Wine that was on a 2007 Mojo cd that I just found in an old container. It's by Tony Tribe and was apparently Trojan's first big hit back in '69.

IT came on this cd when i had the thing playing on the other side of the room and had me hoping tghat it wasn't the UB40 cover, seemed pretty poppy. But I guess that's not a band they would compile. THis wasa thing called cigarettes and Alcohol so covers alotof musio over a wide array of eras on the 2 subjects. Starts with Gil Scott Heron's The bottle, and does cover some really poppy stuff.
UB40 were ok for at least their first lp and i couldn't remember how early their version of the song was. Or find the tracklisting since I had rearranged a few cds when it was playing.

Do wonder if the initial question here about Son Of A preacher man might be either Nancy Sinatra or Honeycone.
YTHough Sinatra's version probably sounds a bit too clean to be confused with Joplin, nice version though.

There’s someone doing the same claim, that this mislabel comes from the limewire era... it seems there’s still people who think Janis did a version of this song. There’s a Mandela effect going on in here.

Someone in here claims it might be the Melissa Etheridge version. Fact is that Janis Joplin never recorded or performed this song.

Setlist.fm shows no indication that Janis ever performed it. Her live repertoire in 1969-1970 seems fairly limited by the available evidence.

someone named Bette posted an 18kbps WAV of Janis Joplin's "Son of a Preacher Man" (actually Dusty's version) on the Americas-Graffitti Usenet group in 2007. in this case she can probably be excused for misidentifying the singer. I wonder if she got it off Limewire.

Anyway... I checked out a few versions of this song by artists whose names caught my eye (Skeeter Davis, Bobbie Gentry, Aretha); and while they’re all fine performances of a great song, I came away with the sense that nothing’s gonna top Dusty’s version. (...Though I haven’t listened to the other 40 covers out there, maybe one of them somehow does!)

when I got my first karaoke machine for Christmas in like 1992 or 1993, it came with a tape with four karaoke songs. "Hound Dog", "The Name Game", one other I've forgotten, and David Lee Roth version of "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody".

so Dad records himself doing the latter, and my brother and I started singing it, because the other songs were boring. I was like 12 or 13 and my brother was 10 or 11.
