I guess when this is over we'll have THE greatest rock'n'roll party tune of all time.

Swingin' Medallions. Then Human Beinz. Then...??

This might be my favorite album of all time, fwiw -- at least in its original 1987 vinyl version, which has a slightly different songlist than the one above (which I believe is the later CD version). But yesterday afternoon I found this one for $2 at a Goodwill in Austin:

(Various Artists) The Original Toga Party (Adam VIII double LP, 1979 ("As seen on TV" comp of clearly awesome '50s and '60s frat-party hits by the Isley Brothers, Sam Cooke, Dovels, Regents, Orlons, Kingsmen, Bobby Lewis, Joey Dee and the Starlighters, Lee Dorsey, Chips, The Essex, Kingsmen, Tommy James and Shondells, etc.)

'Hungry'

zeus, Sunday, 15 March 2009 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

no surfin' bird no credibility. but maybe surfin' bird's status as the greatest song ever written or recorded would be unfair to these mighty contenders.

then again, no 96 tears no credibility. yeah i know blame allen klein.

okay for me it's a three way tie between hungry/double shot/louie louie

Your mention of that record on the dollar thread inspired this poll, Chuck.

I'm going to say Human Beinz. I bought this CD in 1987 and played into the ground, often while drinking beer and hanging out with friends, though I was not in a fraternity. My father was in college from 1962 to 1966 and he loved this stuff + especially surf guitar bands like the Astronauts, Dick Dale, and Johnny & the Hurricanes (though I guess the latter weren't really surf).

Looking at the track list also makes me want to listen to the Frogs cover of "Reelin and Rockin".

scott otm about 96 tears...swingin medallions' double shot is a poor substitute but it wins...barrett strong as close 2nd...

sing everybody deutsche deutsche (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 15 March 2009 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

Nobody's mentioned the album's obvious ringer -- the Dynatones' just adequate version of "Shout," which I guess is the equivalent of one of those old By The Orignal Artists albums recorded by a band called The Original Artists. Liner notes of the LP said they were from San Francisco, and "reprising" the song.

I actually like "Double Shot" even more than "Surfin Bird" or "96 Tears." Which is sort of like something being better than God, but I'm weird.

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Monday, 16 March 2009 09:17 (sixteen years ago)

Wooly Bully. I was in a frat in the mid 90s and yet this shit still brought down the house (and the pants). One of the guys in the club was basically silent all the time but when Wooly Bully came on it was 2 mins of party madness.
