How much time do you spend listening to music in an average week?

... including live shows, mtv, last fm (etc), ornery radio, myspazz, guitar hero, as well as all the usual methods. Probably not including music that's on in a pub or other venue that you're not actively or consciously paying attention to.

Hard/impossible to evaluate accurately and I'm sure there's no such thing as an "average week" blah blah blah but.. well im curious.

don't know but if there was a "too much" option i'd probably go with that

sonderangerbot, Monday, 16 March 2009 11:38 (sixteen years ago)

I've voted 10-20 hours, but I really don't know. It probably is more. Much of it these days is passive listening though; like right now I'm at work and I'm playing Boards Of Canada - I have a 7-=8 hour work day which'd mean 36 hours music listening a week just from that, except I often don't have music on, or have meeting or am otherwise out of the office, and it's generally just ambient I play anyway, so more as company that actually something to listen to.

At home we have the Zeppelin on quite a bit with a playlist from the iPod playing, could be anywhere from ten minutes to 8 hours a day sometimes at weekends. Serious headphone listening is few and far between at the moment.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 16 March 2009 12:05 (sixteen years ago)

at least half the work day, a couple of hours every night and most of the weekend. so probably 50-60 hours

w/ sax (electricsound), Monday, 16 March 2009 12:05 (sixteen years ago)

Around 2h/day in the week. 30min morning/evening in public transportation and around 1h once I get home (late)/before I sleep. I don't listen to music at work).
maybe 10h/day during the week end.
so around 30 hours/week, I guess.

AleXTC, Monday, 16 March 2009 12:27 (sixteen years ago)

3 hrs per day on public transportation, five days a week.
1-2 hrs. per day in the car on weekends (this is mostly superhero theme songs)
The radio is always on at home, but I don't count it as listening.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 16 March 2009 12:34 (sixteen years ago)

Probably about 3-4 hours per day at work, Mon-Fri, then another 2-3 hours apiece on the weekend days = about 20-25 hours.

ilxor, Monday, 16 March 2009 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

Before marriage and kids, I probably listened three hours per day. Now it's more like one hour per day maximum. Unless you count the Pooh soundtrack. *sigh*

the tip of the tongue taking a trip tralalala (stevienixed), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

Probably between 2 and 5 hours a day - so 20-40 I guess.

~30 hours or so.

the chicano incarnation of benito juarez (primalfixations), Monday, 16 March 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

3-4 hours a day, so between 21 and 28 hours a week.

snoball, Monday, 16 March 2009 16:12 (sixteen years ago)

low end of 60-80, but my workweek accounts for the first 40...

ian, Monday, 16 March 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

50-60, most of which is done during my 40hrs at work. Unless i'm walking with someone I always wear headphones out and about. The very first thing I do when i get home from work is turn on the stereo and start the music. This happens before my shoes or coat comes off and the music doesn't stop at home until i decide to watch some TV.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 16 March 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

People who listen to loads of music at home; do you live alone or with a partner or with family or with flatmates?

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 16 March 2009 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

i live with my gf of 9 years. she's fine with it since it's in a diff. room to the TV but occasionally i'll put on the headphones if she's studying or wants me to turn down the volume.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

Do you spend a of of time in different rooms?

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 16 March 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

no, usually we're in the same room unless she wants to watch Fat People On TV or Survivor

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

Being unemployed and an English student, I currently have too much free time on my hands and have become obsessed with what I do with it. So since I saw this question this morning, I've been keeping a log. Dear god I need a girlfriend/job/more of a social life/shotgun.

(Live w/ flatmates by the way, but walls are pretty much sound proof at my average listening volume.)

silly ho (a hoy hoy), Monday, 16 March 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

I don't even know. I'm unemployed at the moment, so I could easily be listening to 10 hours of music a day. 50-60 or more? Couldn't tell you.

I live alone. I don't have a telly so music takes up a lot of the sonic landscape of my house. I don't own an iPod or anything, so it's all in the house.

Bubble Withdrawal (Masonic Boom), Monday, 16 March 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

this, but i coiuld make a lot more time for music than i do. i listen to talk radio or talk podcasts on the road, and when i do listen to music it's been less 'directed' than in the past, just random lastfm stations or whatever. i only listen to 'albums' or something specific if i have a craving, i popped in hard day's night the other day out of the blue for instance but that's getting rarer. been like this for about 6 months, still feels foreign but the anxiety about 'missing' stuff is fading hard. i think it's better for me than my old patterns.

peace pipe to youur lips (tremendoid), Monday, 16 March 2009 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

5-8 hours a day, at least 5 days a week. If podcasts and news radio counted, more like 10 hours a day 5 days a week.

kenan, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

I listen to about 4-5 hours of mp3s at work per day, then there's ipod to and from work, another hour. At home I don't get to listen to as much music as I'd like cos the stereo is in the same room as the TV and I don't like to be antisocial and sit there with headphones on, so I only get a few hours a week there. So somewhere around 30 hours a week I reckon.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Monday, 16 March 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

I'm probably somewhere between 25 and 30 hours, most of which is via my ipod while to and from work, and while I'm on lunch, although that time is often spent in the company of (prob too many) podcasts instead, when I can't be bothered to actually read.

Since my flatmate has installed a ridiculous sound system in our kitchen - on top of the one we already have in the sitting room and my own bedroom - i've been washing up and cooking a lot more cuz the whole experience is made exponentially more satisfying.

I don't spend much time *just* listening to music, feeling obliged to do other stuff at the same time, although often the music is absorbing enough to distract me from other tasks. I don't, although probably could, stick my ipod on at work but yeah, don't wanna just shut myself off from everyone else.

voted 60-80, but not sure how accurate that is but basically "Dear god I need a girlfriend/job/more of a social life/shotgun." applies

Jordi La Sarge (The Reverend), Monday, 16 March 2009 20:32 (sixteen years ago)

i dread the answer to this qn and can only really justify it cuz it IS my job :/

lex pretend, Monday, 16 March 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

it's kind of funny this is a thread on a music forum where people are ashamed of the amount of music they listen to.

(yet for me: voted 60-80, but not sure how accurate that is but basically "Dear god I need a girlfriend/job/more of a social life/shotgun." applies <<)

Ludo, Monday, 16 March 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

Usually 3 hours or so at work. Then usually a drunken weekend night from 11PM-2AM. Band practice or a gig for 3 hours. Another 3 hours a week for running and/or close listening when writing a review. So probably a minimum of 20 per week. Rarely more than 30 hours, sadly.

bendy, Monday, 16 March 2009 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

Differs from week to week, but 10-20 hours more often than not.

the one eyed, one horned, flyin' purple people eater (Boxing Kangaroo), Monday, 16 March 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

At least 3 - 4 hours an evening - as I never watch TV and music is always playing on the computer unless I'm reading or on the phone.

Weekends - anything from 5 to 12 hours plus per day.

Bob Six, Monday, 16 March 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

20-40, mostly at work or on the bus, but occassionally at comp on weekends or while I'm making dinner.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 March 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)

I put music on as soon as I wake up, then headphones if I go in to the studio, then put music on as soon as I get there, then headphones on the way back, then music as soon as I get home.

This is only really broken up if I do something else that requires sound, like watching television, on the phone or playing computer games. Or if I have to fill in a form or something like that which the music isn't conduicive to. Or if go do something. I spend quite a lot of time on my own and listen to music most of the time.

Music goes back on when I go to sleep. If my girlfriend is around it's not that much different, but maybe a little less because I get super repetitive playing the same things because I tend to just press "play" and dont play music when going to sleep so often.

So 60-80 hours, I guess. I was kinda surprised that people dont listen to music more, but I guess they do more stuff!

Suedey 2, Monday, 16 March 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

50-60 a week I guess - it's always on at work, in the kitchen when I'm making any of the day's meals and in my room if I'm in during the evening. Apart from the fact that this basically screams LOLOLOL YOU HAVE NO GIRLFRIEND WHY DO YOU EVEN THINK THAT IS, I only have a problem with the fact that more quiet/tuneful stuff tends to get played at work so as not to piss off coworkers, which means it gets less of a fair hearing a lot of the time

Luka ModReq (DJ Mencap), Monday, 16 March 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

The only successful relationships I've ever had have been with men who listened to as much (if not more, if that's even possible) music as I did - i.e. why my longest lasting relationships have been with a) a DJ and b) a soundartist.

I've stayed in bad relationships well past their use-by date simply for the convenience of having a live-in DJ. So I guess I don't need a BF now I've got iTunes shuffle, ha ha.

Bubble Withdrawal (Masonic Boom), Monday, 16 March 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

voted 1 - 5 since i basically just listen to music on the way to/from work. it's 20 minutes each way, but i listen to at least 2 hours of non-music podcasts a week too. it would be more if you count playing music in rehearsals/shows.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 16 March 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

Probably 10-20; might be more, actually, but I tend not to have that much listening time at weekends, so maybe not.

That's what I voted, anyway.

Atoms are "balls" (grimly fiendish), Monday, 16 March 2009 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

Probably 40 to 50.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 March 2009 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

I'm guessing 10-20. Last.fm sez I've listened to about 150 tracks last week, which probably averages out to about 10-12 hours. Of course, it doesn't count radio, MySpace, etc., but I doubt that that's enough to bump me up into the next category.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Monday, 16 March 2009 23:20 (sixteen years ago)

never thought about it till now but surprisingly, at least for me, i listen to music much less than most people here: about 3-5 hours per week.
mainly while driving, jogging and about half an hour-hour a day at home.
used to listen to my ipod while walking around the streets, but i got rid of that habit somehow.

Zeno, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

i listen to a lot of music at night when i'm falling asleep; i usually have a hard time getting to sleep without it actually. is this normal? i've met at least a couple people with a similar affliction...

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Monday, 16 March 2009 23:33 (sixteen years ago)

it's normal unles you listen to death metal

Zeno, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

I'm surprised how many times I *could* listen to music during the week and actually turn it down. On weekends it's usually more or less non-stop, though. I voted 20-40 hrs.

I Harbour Multitudes (Bimble), Monday, 16 March 2009 23:41 (sixteen years ago)

20-40. That's probably about half live music and includes my Dj sets.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

Voted 20-40, but I may be kidding myself about how much it actually is. (Work at home, iTunes is the first app I start after email and browser.)
