I remembered earlier that ILM did a top-100-records-ever poll back in the day. It's interesting to see how (if at all) the ILMcritical consensus has changed. A few of the high pollers are a bit odd.

finally, i get to vote for surfin' bird somewhere!

scott seward, Monday, 16 March 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

oh wait vote for the most what the fuck? oops, can i take my vote back?

scott seward, Monday, 16 March 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

i voted for Surfin' Bird. I suggest everyone else do the same

Mr. Que, Monday, 16 March 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I was about to vote 'blood on the tracks' before I reread it. almost everything on this list is still good and ilm-approved.

except, of course, manic street preachers, which is gonna win this.

iatee, Monday, 16 March 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

The Holy Bible or Neutral Milk Hotel.

Two hands in the air, that's the Lampard Skank (Matt DC), Monday, 16 March 2009 16:58 (sixteen years ago)

sorry but how is this not the britney spears single at #2?

fap fap fap wtf crazy caps self-publishe... (1) (rent), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

it's not ever her best single, and it's the #2 record of all time?

fap fap fap wtf crazy caps self-publishe... (1) (rent), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

the whole mixing in singles with albums in one list thing is more WTF than any one entry on the list

some dad (some dude), Monday, 16 March 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

96. Judy Collins - "Send in the Clowns" (single)

:)

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Monday, 16 March 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

rent makes a compelling argument that still does not make me think I shouldn't vote for NMH

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 16 March 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

wtf at the manic street preachers album? i slept through a decade again didnt i

a thread for clams that you are free to disregard (jjjusten), Monday, 16 March 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

This list justs makes me want to listen to Virginia Plain over and over again. And so I shall. lolwtf @ most of it, voted generation terrorists though.

silly ho (a hoy hoy), Monday, 16 March 2009 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

Pinkerton is the one album on here that I find most credibility destroying.

Mister Jim, Monday, 16 March 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

More credibility destroying than TWO Manic Street Preachers albums?!?! I don't know about that.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

I can't even decide which one to vote for. May have to tie-break with NMH.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

Definitely Britney at #2. It didn't even make sense back then, no matter how big of a Britney Spears fan you are/were.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

alex: vote for the one that's apparently the 5th best piece of music in the 20th century

iatee, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah my heart sez to do that, but then my ears remember how awful Generation Terrorists is.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:26 (sixteen years ago)

GT is great. Anyway surely britney at n02 is more wtf than manics at 45

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 16 March 2009 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

britney at #2 seems mostly symbolic to me

iatee, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:56 (sixteen years ago)

I used to read ILM back then and believe me Britney at # 2 does not surprise me at all.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

but yeah, other than the manics is there a really much on this list that would be O_o on a ilm 2009 list? I don't think so. maybe turbonegro and sweet female attitude?

iatee, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

Oh so did I and it doesn't surprise me in the least. It's still WTF though that anyone could think it was the 2nd best thing ever in music.

I would be really surprised to see Tricky make the cut in 09

mothra juggs and speed (los blue jeans), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 00:06 (sixteen years ago)

I'd vote for Tricky, that album's fucking great!

ilxor, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 02:37 (sixteen years ago)

Seems like it'd be fairer to just do the real poll again (like *cough* Pitchfork) - this is just going to be one of those things that indexes the weirdness of only getting to vote for one single thing.

Actually what would be really fun would be to do the poll again, classic style, but with the same list of nominations. Just to see. I mean I think for example that the 90s mainstream rock (Jane's Addiction, In Utero) would drop way to the bottom, while the Motown box would shoot into like the top twenty. But I might be overstating the difference between then and now - I wasn't there!

All that being said..."Baby One More Time"? Real blast from the past - when there weren't better Britney singles yet...

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

Someone super awesome should do a super epic 00's decade album/singles ILX poll.

Mordy, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 02:48 (sixteen years ago)

I'm sure someone will, when the decade's over.

Jordi La Sarge (The Reverend), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 02:53 (sixteen years ago)

britney at #2 seems mostly symbolic to me

It was a large part of it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

caek, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

ian, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 04:45 (sixteen years ago)

and how

Morley Timmons, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 04:57 (sixteen years ago)

the whole mixing in singles with albums in one list thing is more WTF than any one entry on the list

that's the best thing about the list!

I forgot it was WTF by the time I got through 100 items and voted for Star Time :(

Couldn't they have picked a pop record that's actually, you know, good? *ducks*

The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

Me, Ally,J.D. I think.

half the votes for the manics album were probably for best album judging by some of the other votes

Trust me, I know how you feel.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 March 2009 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

Praise for Pinkerton is not WTF-worthy. 5 people voted wrong.

billstevejim, Thursday, 19 March 2009 03:31 (sixteen years ago)

i love that "flowers" made all-time top 100! wtf so awesome

winstonian (winston), Thursday, 19 March 2009 03:37 (sixteen years ago)
