Or am I in the minority here?

Well, count me in.

There's been a bit of Cam talk on autogoon. I like "I Hate My Job" a lot.

I love how "Cookies & Apple Juice" is a way-late-to-the-party goof on Soulja Boy yet is just as funny as it would've been back in 2007.
― Beatrix Kiddo, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)
i barely listened to that song but how does it have a Soulja Boy vibe?
― some dad (some dude), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)
"COOKIES AND SOME APPLE JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUICE!"
― Beatrix Kiddo, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)
ok, maybe the influence is limited to "crank dat soulja boy."
― Beatrix Kiddo, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:09 (sixteen years ago)
it seems more in the spirit of "chain hang low" or old double dutch stuff, bringing back a schoolyard chant...lol i hadn't thought of "milk milk lemonade, around the corner fudge is made" since i was like 6.

cryme pais
― ice cr?m, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i dunno...to me Cam has always been at least as infantile as any teen rapper so it just struck me as another Cam song.
― some dad (some dude), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)
so this has leaked and is fabulous
― Beatrix Kiddo, Sunday, 10 May 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)
We wanted a The Wrestler-style comeback that derived power from its protagonist's fall; instead, this LP has a lonely, defensive Kirk Van Houten vibe.

that's a good review
cam is still on point lyrically to me (ie "make da trap say aye") - and his albums always slow burn for me cuz i hate his emotionless delivery lots of the time - but the beats on this album are just so so ugly and unappealing and boring and repetitive. on purple haze, songs like "soap opera" and "hey lady" and "girls" were a necessary counter point to these super menacing beats like "get em girls" and "bubble music" and "leave me alone pt 2". and then you had an out of nowhere cali rip off like "chi" or something like "killa cam" which has so much urgency. so much of crime pays is unappealing sonically and laconic emotionally
― oj da hoosman (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 May 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
he sounds so much better over a buoyant and colorful beat like "make da trap say aye" than he does over the beats on crime pays
― oj da hoosman (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 May 2009 18:03 (sixteen years ago)
i'm kinda fuck that pfork review, this record's better than that (not as great as purp haze, much better than killa season)
but maybe i just don't listen to enough NYC punchline rap
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 15 May 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)
jordan, i think he's going in the right direction - the beats are such a huge improvement over public enemy/killa season that it's insane
also remember back in the purp haze days he had access to expensive/a-list beat makers
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 15 May 2009 19:12 (sixteen years ago)
but i went through these stages
1st listen: "oh yeah, new cam, this is awesome3rd-7th listens: "some gems, some clunkers, like most cam albums"15th listen: "you know, even the clunkers are bangin', they're not really clunkers after all"
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 15 May 2009 19:19 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i don't think it's fair to compare his stuff w/ purple haze, but it's really the only cam album that i fuck with so it's inevitable personally. but wrt to a-list beatmakers and such, purple haze doesn't have any just blaze beats or anything (one from kanye sure) and really it was produced by a bunch of no names with the exception of the heatmakerz who are only famous for other dipset songs. to me there's just a problem w/ the tone of the album, it's not fun, it's not adventurous and i just think it's really monotones despite the fact that cam's verses still read well
― oj da hoosman (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 May 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)
tone of the album = the tone of 'crime pays'
and really monotonous not really monotones
haze had two kanye joints, but you're right - my memory sucks.
hmm. so it's still no-names but yeah, tone's different for sure.
thing is that it's easier for me to sit through CP than it is for me to sit through PH, in terms of production. i need to work on WHY that is.
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 15 May 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)
part of it = fewer bloody guests
though i miss dipset guest spots
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 15 May 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)
any favorites, jordan? so far, mine are:
2. Cookin' Up3. whatever it's titled8. "Get It In Ohio"10. "Grease" (Skit)15. "Chalupa"17. "My Job"
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 15 May 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)
i actually liked all the songs that came out before the album dropped. i think "i hate my job" is great and i like "cookin up" and "get it in ohio" a lot too. "silky (no homo)" reminds me of the stuff of purple haze that i like the most ("soap opera" etc), and i think the beat brings out the best of cam's silly side ("he baked beans, just add rice/ no soft drinks, just mad ice") and it's probably my fav off the album
― oj da hoosman (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 May 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)
heh, yeah! i love it when cam just trances out on a tangent and starts free-associating (while still making a point, though sometimes he's just riffing) that's when he's at his best imo
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 15 May 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
doing a song titled "got it for cheap" w/o clipse seems sorta counter-intuitive, no?
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 15 May 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i thought that was weird
― oj da hoosman (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 May 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

lol at nobody being on Cam's dick anymore
still love this album, though it's got a few too many weak tracks to make my top 10 albums list
