JAMC Stoned and Dethroned Poll

This record seemed to come out of nowhere, at a time when I didn't the band could offer a whole lot new. It's can be an insult to say an album's consistency is one of its virtues, but in this case I don't think it is.

I'm tempted to go with "Girlfriend" or "Dirty Water", but I'm going to sit on it a while.

If the (longer) version of "Come On" had been there, that'd have got my vote.

So, went "Sometimes Always"...

Word was, they tried to get Bob Dylan for "God help me", settled for Shane, who actually sang it.

Mark G, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

Wow, I hadn't heard that about Dylan! I wonder whether Dylan himself considered it, or just his handlers. There's a story in the box set notes about them trying to hook up with Lee Hazlewood and failing because of poor security handling at a show.

great, underrated album

Roberto Mussolini (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

Do you know, I don't remember a single song off this album except Sometimes Always. Which is a real shame.

Bubble Withdrawal (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

"Sometimes Always" really is the best number.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the two duets are the real standout tracks - the rest all kind of blur together, but in a good way, I think. agree w/post upthread about the album's uniformity being an odd cirtue

virtue even

Roberto Mussolini (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

It's funny, because I listened to this album so much when it came out, and saw them about 4 times on this tour. But it's all gone from my memory.

Bubble Withdrawal (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think I could name very many of the songs, particularly in the second half; but I listened to it again this morning and enjoyed it a lot, esp. the second half. The album fits with things going on in the noisier side of alt.country at the time (I'm thinking of the Geraldine Fibbers, Uncle Tupelo). The b-sides on the box set aren't quite as strong, but since the album is 17 songs it's understandable that they'd be scraping the bottom at that point.

such an underrated album. i have gone on and bought the DualDisc of all their albums but this one is still in plastic. right now i think it's "Feeling Lucky" but will wait until i open and play it again to vote.

I got the Jap edition w/ the extra tracks, as well...

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

What are the extra tracks? I just tried to find out via google and failed.

^^this, that version of that song is amazing and i voted for it anyways.

It's been a long time since I've listened to this one. While I'll rep hard against anyone with a "but all the songs sound the same" Mary Chain argument, this album did seem like a wash of gray areas to me, with the obvious exception of "Sometimes Always," so that it is. I'm inspired to dig this out, though, because I'm curious about how it has aged. It is the one record of theirs that I don't listen to on an at least semi-regular basis.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Monday, 23 March 2009 05:32 (sixteen years ago)

It's turning into the album of theirs I put on the most.

I'm still deliberating. Now it's between "Save Me" and "Girlfriend".

Euler, Monday, 23 March 2009 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

Ok, I'm going with "Girlfriend". It would be great to hear New Order cover this, it certainly has a lyric worthy of Bernard. Listening sorta closely, what I notice is that the drums, when the song picks up, acquire an early-90s Manchester-"Funky Drummer" tinge, but since they're not mixed to sound like huge exploding rock drums, it doesn't sound dated. The drums aren't really keeping the rhythm by the end of the song; it's the maracas, which end up fusing with the rhythm guitar in jangle.

lol I guess my "Girlfriend" vote didn't count. A landslide! Great song, of course.
