you guys are always going on and on about bad indie dance music, but this album is really good!

yay, new music i like!

(and what with that giant brain album i got yesterday, this is turning out to be a big week for me!)

I know nothing about this but just wanted to say that "chin chin" translates as "penis" in Japanese. Maybe these guys know that already.

funnily enough there's a dubstep producer called "chimpo" which apparently also means penis in japanese.

take it from me, this album is cool. makes chromeo and all that other gunk sound like yesterday's meatballs.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

actually, i shouldn't compare dumbo electro gunk like chromeo to this album. this album is more horn-fed nu-disco. more 70's than 80's, in other words.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

what i heard seemed quite jamie lidell-y. a bit pastichey/kitschy/haha look! we like funk/disco.

Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:36 (sixteen years ago)

no. better than that. more organic. great harmonica solos and piano solos and sax solos and ha ha look! people wouldn't even bother or know how. my brief random googling led me to something that mentioned some dance night somewhere where chin chin and budos band played and that's more like it really. budos/daptones/antibalas is where i would place chin chin. real musicians with real retro love and some people might not dig that, but not so easy to just dismiss as joke.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

im gonna try and find the album.

Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

and the album is super enjoyable! and it's on def jux! the world really is a strange place these days.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

def jux prob cant survive on indie rap alone...

Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

ouch, this guy from something called the cleveland metromix really hates:

"The verdict: DJs have liked Chin Chin’s records because they are full of easily palatable neo-disco and faux-funk, not because they actually think this stuff is good. It works for all those corporate gigs, charity receptions and tapas-pushing wine bars. The comparisons to Gnarls Barkley border on ridiculous, as Chin Chin owe far more to cheesy Euro-disco/house and the sound of business casual-types dancing after one too many white zinfandels than to anything Danger Mouse has touched. As far as Chin Chin releases go, “The Flashing, The Fancing” doesn’t flip the script: the beats are either too fast or too slow, the wanna-vintage touches are increasingly passé and the brass section still is omni-present, as are the decently executed but totally derivative, soul-setto vocals. There’s decent playing/programming in spots, but the whole affair feels inauthentic and forced."

there are four songs from the new album here:

i think "go there with you" is fab. i do not vouch for the two older songs on this myspace page though. i didn't even listen to them.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

it sounds like nice organic disco but it started getting kinda irritating after a couple tunes. i think maybe it's too busy?

i like budos band better than this but will admit that it's very wallpapery/forgettable

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

oh no! business casual-types might dance to this album!! it must be horrible!!

i hate when music writers trash music by talking about which reviled group of people might enjoy it.

as if "business casual-types" don't dance to Gnarls Barkley anyway.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

ok, the second song had a bongo slap in it. "go there with you" was good though.

How do you feel about white zinfandel?

Mark, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

"chin chin" is how you toast (cheers!) in several countries. I would guess they were going for that rather than Japanese penises.

You would say it as you lifted your glass of, say, white zinfandel.

I really liked the singles from the first album, especially the Prins Thomas and Chicken Lips mixes. Glad to hear they've got a new one out, I'll have to check it out when I get home from work.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 20:48 (sixteen years ago)

i've liked a lot of their singles in the past, but i've mostly been drawn to them by the remixers moreso than the band.

one year passes...

"Go There With You" is kind of my jam lately...it reminds me of a broodier Jai sort of! That is probably a pretty square ref.

Whatever that littl arpeggio is it just tickles me right.
