This album has now replaced TMR as the tops Beefheart album. Does this make me crazy?

Tropical Hot Dog Night has been my favorite song of his since i first heard it.
It's just so catchy and so much fun!
he should have released a whole album of tropical pool party tunes

Not at all! "Tropical Hot Dog Night" shades it I think.

Candle Mambo 4EVA!!!

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 19 March 2009 13:49 (sixteen years ago)

It's definitely "Tropical Hot Dog Night"...but it's almost "When I See Mommy I Feel Like a Mummy". Somebody call a doctor because that groove is SICK.

chocolatepiekid, Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

^OTM, love the words on "When I See Mommy I Feel Like a Mummy" too

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

And then there's "Owed T'Alex"!!!!!

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

Much better thread title than my own "Trout Mask Re-Poll-ica", kudos. Took me a long time to really come to fully appreciate this one (I had a minor anti-trombone bias), but now consider it a favourite.

The Rube Goldberg-ian Delta-disco of the title track gets my vote, although I suspect THDN will take this one

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the title track is f'in great too...best song inspired by windshield wipers...

drugs LOL money (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

"Apes-Ma, Apes-Ma
Remember when you were young, Apes-Ma?
And you used to break out of your cage?
Well you know that you're not strong enough to do that anymore now,
And Apes-Ma, the little girl that named you years ago has died now
And you're older, Apes-Ma.
Remember when she named you and it was in the paper, Apes-Ma?
Apes-Ma, Apes-Ma
You're eating too much, you're going to the bathroom too much, Apes-Ma
And Apes-Ma, your cage isn't getting any bigger, Apes-Ma"

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's a super-poignant way to end the album, aint it? one of the best closers ever...

drugs LOL money (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

I have gotten so much mileage out of Tropical Hot Dog Night. It's still the first song I think of when I think of Beefheart besides maybe some of the cut up poetry on Troutmask.

This is such a great record. One of his best IMO.

Nate Carson, Friday, 20 March 2009 10:37 (sixteen years ago)

Apes-ma: All the more striking for not having any fancy wordplay/avant stylings, and cutting in its directness...

Mark G, Friday, 20 March 2009 11:26 (sixteen years ago)

If there was a best Beefheart spoken word poll or maybe even best Beefheart closers it'd get my vote

turtles all the way down (Face of Wolf), Friday, 20 March 2009 11:35 (sixteen years ago)

I love this album! Was my first introduction to Beefheart. As a teen I liked Zappa, so based on their connection I foun d this one in a cut-out bin, and was surprised to see that it was not at all zappaesque.

The only song that I think is a little out of place is "Harry Irene"...tuna sandwiches and all.

I could go for 6 or 7 songs off this, so I'll go with "Love Lies"

Amenaza Elegante, Friday, 20 March 2009 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

"You Know You're a Man"

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 20 March 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

"Tropical Hot Dog Night," no contest. One of my favorite Beefheart songs in general.

_Rockist__Scientist_, Friday, 20 March 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

Voted for Suction Prints. I'm not certain that its the best song on this record, it just doesn't fit in with the rest, somehow. It sounds like a Trout Mask era instrumental. Not sure if that's a good enough reason to vote for it in a poll, but it is just ILM, after all.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 March 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 30 March 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

well somebody needs to rep for Floppy Boot Stomp so I will, a great album opener and my favorite on here, love the little spoken breakdowns throughout the song.

Voted for Suction Prints. I'm not certain that its the best song on this record, it just doesn't fit in with the rest, somehow. It sounds like a Trout Mask era instrumental.

I think it dates back to the "Strictly Personal" days. If Stewart Osborne were here, he'd know.

^^^^I know! Evidently I forgot to click that "vote" button.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 07:51 (sixteen years ago)

! that would have been my second choice

eight months pass...

"Candle Mambo" is like some perverse variant on Kid Creole music.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 02:09 (sixteen years ago)

This is a beautiful record.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 02:12 (sixteen years ago)

WTF, no one voted for "When I See Mommy I Feel Like a Mummy" -- the Eric Drew Feldman synth soloing is so awesome, only outdone by the Captain's inflection on "feather."

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 05:14 (sixteen years ago)

Owed T'Alex 1

dudes, this may be my favorite CB song of all time!

~~dark energy~~ (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 05:18 (sixteen years ago)

Great album. Best song won.

~bump~

on the Beefheart vs. Minutemen thread, I realized i'm not alone in coming around in a major way to this record. while TMR gets the "artistic statement" nod, this album is really my favorite, esp. to drive around LA to. "Owed T'Alex" is great and def underrated in this poll!

like this record a lot - but it's the DOC i love the most

Zeno, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

maybe it's the post-punk atmosphere that i fell in love with..

Zeno, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

Would've voted 'Bat Chain Puller' if I'd seen the poll. Beefheart at his most sinister & dynamic. Great record!!

ImprovSpirit, Thursday, 5 August 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

Same here, "Doc" was my intro to Beefheart
