Compared to the poppy sheen of some of the songs, Malpractice and Jizzlobber are almost painful to listen to. The Glockenspiel break in the former, and the transistion to Midnight Cowboy in the latter, are like waking up from a terrible nightmare into a beautiful spring morning.

The organ at the end of Jizzlober is fantastic. Overall not one of my faves though - Malpractice is more disjointed and frightening.

this is the exact same problem i am having

part of the problem is the songs are so different from each other that it's almost like apples and oranges within the album ... like how do you compare "RV" to "crack hitler"?

I realise it's quite a fiendish challenge.

The reason I'm leaning towards Midlife Crisis is that it exemplifies their ability to take many defiantly odd elements and combine them into a seamless (and unabashedly radio-friendly) whole.

I mean you've got the taut, one-note bassline, menacing growls going into a stadium chorus, the weird scratchy breakdown followed by the swirling orchestral middle eight, and that's not even getting started on the lyrical strangeness. It shouldn't work at all, but it comes together perfectly.

If I had seen this poll I probably would have voted for Everything's Ruined. From Smaller and Smaller to Kingergarten is such a great stretch of songs - really any of those could win it for me.

I'm no Patton stan, but he has been known to absolutely fucking kill it.

FNM's 'nu metal' was shot through with cynicism and assholeness and black humour and that's why it was awesome and why nu-metal was awful bullshit.

I love this album, would have voted for 'Malpractice' without hesitation.

I saw them tour this, supported by L7 circa Bricks Are Heavy, and God it was great. I've never found another band like them.

was that at brixton? saw them for the first time at brixton on that tour, was in the moshpit until someone poked my contact lens out of my eye in the encore. still one of the best shows i ever saw. l7 were ace too, they played their infamous show on the tube that same week.

I saw them headline at the Phoenix festival in 96 and I think it remains the best rock show I've ever seen.

I saw them at Phoenix in 93 and they did an incredible version of We Care a Lot with samples from the Happy Mondays and Public Enemy. Thank God for YouTube.

Phoenix 1993 was the first festival I went to, and I'll never forget Patton gamboling about the stage like Sonic The Hedgehog. I think it was Jim Martin's last show with the band as well - certainly lots of joke at his expense on the bootleg I have.

The Glory Box cover is fantastic. They were the most consistently great live band of my youth, and I took my brother to see the reunion the year before last and they were still excellent.

Still prefer The Real Thing.

I love The Real Thing (the title track is quite possibly one of my favourite ever FNM tracks), but I don't tend to listen to it so much now. Weirdly, I keep finding myself returning to King For A Day more and more.

I gave my little brother most of my FNM CDs some years back, keeping the mp3s on my iPod and my vinyl of Angel Dust for nostalgic reasons. but i lost a bunch of mp3s in a hard disk SNAFU a long times back, so Angel Dust and the odd other track are all the FNM i've had in a long time. My little brother bought me the 'original albums' cheapo CD box set for Xmas and I listened to Real Thing for the first time in AGES while stripping wallpaper over new year's, and 1) what a great album, 2) Angel Dust is still much further up my strasse, and 3) the studio tracks on the You Fat Bastard live album kick some major ass.

King For A Day is the really coked up and nasty album, isn't it? Cuckoo For Caca and Ugly In The Morning are seriously screwed up jams.

I interviewed Bill Gould a year or so ago for a MOJO piece on Pussy Riot, and it was ther first time in ages where I was all like, 'Soooooo, you know your band like entirely made my teen years a fucking thrill, right?'

Yeah, I loved those mangled vocals on 'Cuckoo For Caca'... and King For A Day has 'Ricochet' on it too, which is an all-time FNM track for me.

Small Victory should have rated much higher.

"Land of Sunshine" for me probably, though "Everything's Ruined" and "Caffeine" in close proximity.

the soundtrack to my first year of college, when I was severely depressed and (for the only time in my life) briefly suicidal.

I still never get tired of it.
