How would you attempt to describe the music of Durutti Column to a novice? Would you say it was a hipper man's classical music? Ba dum dum.

Yes, I realize I left in the bonus tracks at the end of the CD that were originally from the Amigos Em Portual album. A purist might complain, but the reason is I just felt like it. I doubt many people will actually vote in this poll anyway. Oh well.

This is your favorite Durutti Column album? Really?

f. hazel, Saturday, 21 March 2009 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

Haha. Did I stutter?

Sleep Tundra (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Saturday, 21 March 2009 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

i chose amigos. portugal & vini fit well together. he is a fado kind of guy. the main advantage of that track is that there is lots of trembly piano and not so much guitar. vini's new age sounding guitar repeating more or less the same motive all over gets really on my nerves after a while. definitely not my fave of dc. that would be probably lc.

This is my favorite Durutti Column album by a mile. Of the early stuff it has the most Factory-esque moody new wave songs balanced by a variety of pop-classical/new age interludes. My favorite song is probably Spent Time. Could be a Joy Division single.

dan selzer, Saturday, 21 March 2009 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

What is wrong with it being anyone's favourite Durutti Column album? (This is not my favourite Durutti Column album.)

Blancmange Is Playing At My House (King Boy Pato), Sunday, 22 March 2009 04:42 (seventeen years ago)

"Prayer"/"Response" is a killer 1-2 combo to lead off the album and if they could combine them, I'd definitely think about that. "For A Western", "The Beggar" and "Spent Time" are all wonderful fantastic tracks but I'm voting "Second Family" today because of its emotional impact following an incident with an iPod and a devastating sub-tropical storm while travelling on a train back in December. And because it's utterly beautiful.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I voted for Bordeaux but could have voted for 4 or 5 others just as easily.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 28 March 2009 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

Aw, man, Bimble's humble poll which hardly no one will vote in. Electricsound to thread, at least?

Prodigal Son of the Gay ILX threads (Bimble), Saturday, 28 March 2009 05:34 (seventeen years ago)

would love to contribute, but... heresy alert.. i have never actually heard this album ;_;

i've heard some of the live versions on domo arigato, which i dig, so this is an oversight i will seek to correct

Told you.

f. hazel, Sunday, 29 March 2009 06:57 (seventeen years ago)

what is the order there? why isn't amigos tops?

alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 29 March 2009 08:19 (seventeen years ago)

i'm gonna play purist and say Amigos shouldn't even be on the poll. First of all, it wasn't on the album, second of all, I can't sing along with it. And prayer shouldn't beat Spent Time. Jesus, people, go listen to Spent Time. And Bordeaux, and The Beggar, and Smile in the Crowd and You've Heard it Before and Dream of a Child...these are great Vini vocal songs!

dan selzer, Sunday, 29 March 2009 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

Dan Selzer! Holy shit, I've been meaning to email you lately. I'm dead serious about this, I wanted to email you so bad last night or whatever. Give me a day or two to work it out, you'll hear from me, okay?

I was just gonna say...Spent Time should have won this poll. Shame on you all.

Is It Goth Enough For You? (Bimble), Monday, 30 March 2009 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

alright, Dan, I wrote you an email, if you don't get it, I'll try an Acute Records email address. Thanks.

Is It Goth Enough For You? (Bimble), Monday, 30 March 2009 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah the Amigos Material shouldn't be in this poll. But yes, it's a great album - possibly my second favourite after Without Mercy. I would've voted for The Beggar if I'd have known.

Dr.C, Monday, 30 March 2009 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

Spent Time, again, still, forever.

dan selzer, Sunday, 13 September 2009 08:09 (sixteen years ago)

Spent Time is beautiful. Previously my favourite was Bordeaux but listening again today has changed my mind.

OCD Scrobbles (I am using your worlds), Sunday, 13 September 2009 11:27 (sixteen years ago)

I love Bordeaux...and the updated version on Guitar and Other Machines.

dan selzer, Sunday, 13 September 2009 11:59 (sixteen years ago)

i still have my factory tape box of this! just thought i'd share that.

scott seward, Sunday, 13 September 2009 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

God, I disappear for a few years and someone polls my second favourite Durutti album... There are so many good songs on here, and if I'd known about it I could have tipped the scales for a winner. I love how "Second family" starts so hopeful then after a minute or so goes through these lovely sad descending chords and suddenly turns deeply melancholy at the end. I want "Spent time" played at my funeral - those high sustained guitar notes that float through the song. That lovely Fender Rhodes that is all over the record. I'm going to go back to this album and play the hell of it again.
