Why should this be listened to?
― Mirror-spangled elephant head (J@cob), Sunday, 22 March 2009 10:09 (sixteen years ago)
i dont really listen to new jungle or dnb in 2009 but i do still drive listening to old 90s mixes of the stuff. nothing to be ashamed of ;)
― Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Sunday, 22 March 2009 10:16 (sixteen years ago)
it should be listened to because ... well, i dunno. maybe it should not be listened to. resident advisor gave it 4/5 though.
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 10:27 (sixteen years ago)
I listened to some of the tracks from the Commix album and they sounded like these awesomely massive widescreen productions tied to... depressingly standard grooves.
I heard this mix is actually housey? True/False?
― Tim F, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:05 (sixteen years ago)
housey? maybe in the sense of "standard grooves".
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:08 (sixteen years ago)
Well if it's in that sense isn't 90% of drum and bass housey?
I saw a Leon Switch & Kryptic Minds mix today that I might pick up once I got money.
― Tim F, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:15 (sixteen years ago)
most of it sounds like awesome jazzy hidden agenda / certificate 18 type drum and bass over your basic 2009 drum breaks. the atmospherics are really great but somehow the whole thing is leaving me more depressed than excited. like right now i am still trying to do my insane "listen to the entire rekids ouvre in one day" thing, and there is this great toby tobias track playing that sounds like a cross between early 90s irresistible force / jonah sharpe type ambient over a standard rekids slo-mo 4/4 house stomp. and the commix album sounds just like that except over "boom thwack skitter skitter boom thwack skitter skitter".
this is like the intelligent counterpart to the dark noisia mix fabric did about a year ago. exciting on paper and when you put it on you're like, "oh man, d&b is happening again!" but for some reason after three tracks depression sets in.
it's not like this rekids stuff i'm listening to is particularly rhythmically exciting or anything ... how is it that even "complex" stuff like breakage sounds totally standard these days?
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:15 (sixteen years ago)
ok i just put it on, will liveblog it
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:17 (sixteen years ago)
It's weird - why does house never get as deadeningly boring as drum & bass?
Did you ever hear Clever's Unsung Heroes mix Vahid? That's what I want from d&b much more than breakage. In fact the self-consciously dense layered stuff like breakage often leaves me cold, they often fail to bring a good groove (see also: Fanu).
"most of it sounds like awesome jazzy hidden agenda / certificate 18 type drum and bass over your basic 2009 drum breaks."
Yeah this is what I would have expected based on Commix's own work.

track 1: rainforest noises and bongos. flute. vocal sample says "new thoughts, new questions". would not be out of place on logical progression #1 except that it sounds like a million bucks whereas some of that stuff sounds a bit tinny.
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:21 (sixteen years ago)
track 2: boomp skitter skit-skitter boomp skitter skit-skitter. acoustic guitars. someone is singing "oh, you don't have to be alone, oh, you can be with friends". i think this is a rufige kru track. WHAT THE FUCK, GOLDIE?
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:24 (sixteen years ago)
correction: vocal hook is saying "we started out as friends"
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:25 (sixteen years ago)
track 3: ok this has some weird drum programming in it. sounds like someone hitting a high-pitched wood block in weird time over your standard high-speed rolling breaks. not too different from old cert 18. and someone keeps saying "odyssey" over and over again.
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:31 (sixteen years ago)
hmm okay i thought we were on track 4 but this is actually track 6 now. is this a bad sign, that i'm missing tracks in the mix?
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:35 (sixteen years ago)
track 5 is a dark-ish thing with acrid bass and awkward crab-walking sideways breaks that leads into "murderation" by logistics which is the first killer track on the whole thing. murderation starts with something like a live-sounding drum break with this great infectious "murder dem" sample over these awesome bass drops. good track.
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:37 (sixteen years ago)
tracks 7 & 8 sound just like old late-period certificate 18 tracks. crisp techy breaks and super-deep concise bass noises. this is OK. and then in track 9 someone starts with really bad massive attack type white man singjaying and there's like a bleep track that comes in. this is housey. it's calibre, which makes sense.
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 11:47 (sixteen years ago)
then there was 2 or 3 tracks of the most boring beats you can imagine, sounded like dom & roland with all of the noise and volume sucked out and these horrible echoey bleeps on top. apparently that passes for "techno influenced". then i turned it off. sorry, commix. sorry, ILX, i failed to get through it.

wow, this is how I like my dnb. anyone can recommend me mixes or anything that sound like this? thank you
