this label is my favorite 180 ever ... from total "i don't get it" to total "can't live without it"

think real hard about the remixes before you vote. i made it a one month poll so that i could proceed by careful elimination before voting. think of it as a "if you had only one of these in your crate forever".

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 21 March 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

don't have a ton of these so I'm basically deciding between these four:
secret base
serotone
bell clap dance
brooklyn club jam

with probably a nod towards runaway but that's mostly recency I think ...

dmr, Sunday, 22 March 2009 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

serotone is really good, but i think limited as a 12". as great as the "serotone" itself goes - the mentasm thing - there's really not much difference between how it's deployed in the two tracks, and they almost sound like a -8 and +8 version of the same track.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

i am listening to all of these in order tonight, and i am at serotone right now ... so far "secret base" stands out as everything good about rekids in one track, even moreso than "my bleep" which was an amazing way to start the label. but i am also mad impressed with "no sleep pt 1".

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

"weeze" from "no sleep 1" is such a headfuck, and "modena" is a great minimal melody tool in the tradition of booka shade or whatnot. good variety on that 12, with two killer and completely underrated tracks.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

detmann's remix of "u askin" is a weird tactic. the original track has such an amazingly stealthy beat, and those great ascending synth lines that sound like blood rushing to your head. the interplay of high and low elements in that track is super-sick. i always imagine the tricky beat at foot level, telling your feet what to do, the gongs and bass hits around your midsection, mooring you to the beat, and the ascending whizzing noises as druggy rushes to the head. at first it's interesting how dettmann foreshortens all of that into a martial stomp, but it's a bummer that the acidic bleeps he drops on the top seem to have so little to do with the bass melody.

rekids is an amazingly catchy label, i think. already up to "data sapiens" and so far every track has that hummable, hooky element. so dope. so far the only semi-dud notes are "spencer parker's "beautiful noise", luke solomon's "ghouls" and maybe "data sapiens". there seems to be a unifying vibe (maybe formula) to this label of thumping beat + "weird noise" / novelty effect. when the "weird noise" swerves too far into explicitly abrasive electrohouse territory it doesn't seem to work as well as when they're concentrating on the dark and spooky haunted house noises. maybe that's just my taste, though.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

where is no sleep 3????

butter tickle (tricky), Sunday, 22 March 2009 04:15 (seventeen years ago)

never mind it was promo only.

butter tickle (tricky), Sunday, 22 March 2009 04:21 (seventeen years ago)

i:cube remix of "the feeling" is my favorite track on this label in recent memory.

butter tickle (tricky), Sunday, 22 March 2009 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

i left "no sleep 3" off because it is a re-edit

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 04:38 (seventeen years ago)

that might be a separate poll with all the quiet village tracks!

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 04:38 (seventeen years ago)

just listened to the QV album today

butter tickle (tricky), Sunday, 22 March 2009 04:51 (seventeen years ago)

So hard to pick, I'm thinking the Sebo K mix of "Bell Clap Dance", but "The Feeling" maybe could beat it.

I am using your worlds, Sunday, 22 March 2009 07:28 (seventeen years ago)

all mixes of "the feeling", "brooklyn house jam", and "dave's sex bits" are really pretty good

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 22 March 2009 07:34 (seventeen years ago)

I love the Flugel mix of "My Bleep".

The recent JJak Hogan has one brilliant track on it. Loads of good stuff here tho I definitely don't like everything they put out.

Local Garda, Sunday, 22 March 2009 08:15 (seventeen years ago)

the flugel mix is all incredible, fractal intensity. it's like being in a snowglobe made of bleep techno, where every snowflake is a bleep made of even tinier bleeps. a cathedral of chiming glass beeps!

skipped ahead to the grindhouse remixes ... i know the dubfire mix was like, track of the year for many people, but i can't help think that the synths and vocal are just gilding the lily. for me "grindhouse" is all about the original "grindhouse tool" version and that moment when that epic horn flourish unfurls over the track. i know dubfire called their version "planet terror" but the original is so much more terrifying to me ... when those horns come in it's like the tripods from war of the worlds announcing themselves over a vast, blackened field. not sure why the remixers didn't make more of those horns. missed opportunity.

between "grindhouse tool" and "tantakatan" i'd say "no sleep pt 4" might be an early frontrunner for me.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

so which ones don't you like, ronan?

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

i think pretty much all of the radio slave tracks, mr g tracks and toby tobias tracks are gold. but i also think pretty much all of the luke solomon tracks are awful. the rest i'd say is ... about 2/3rds dope?

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 08:31 (seventeen years ago)

didn't even have to think: "u askin'." i don't think i had a more reliable go-to record while i was playing out a bunch, and it still sounds thrilling to me.

pshrbrn, Sunday, 22 March 2009 10:31 (seventeen years ago)

OMG screaming hands remixes ... forgot how fucking good this record is. wink's version adds the tricky beat programming while keeping all the good elements intact, vitelli locks into the most spaced-out krautrocky groove possible for a track like this. one side brings the funk, the other brings the WTF. super-good record.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

no sleep part 4 (i think that's the one). it was just about everywhere during my first trip to berlin last year

rio (r1o natsume), Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

I'd have to listen to a lot of these again but the ones I always remember are "U Askin", "A Close Shave" and "Bell Clap Dance".

And the Quiet Village remix of "Dave's Sex Bits".

Tim F, Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

the other fantastic thing about the wink remix of screaming hands is how he subtly adds the funk ... it sounds like a losing proposition, since radio slave tracks are so often about the monotonic stomp factor, but the way wink's acid bassline bumps under the original stomping beat is like ninja-level stealth. in a parallel dimension - not better, but different - this track was "mouth to mouth" and audion languished in obscurity.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know about "bell clap dance". track seems unbalanced, to say the least. it's very hevy on the percussion and i like it until the synth riff comes in. the synth riff though is one of the worst he's done, though. maybe it's just me but i find it annoying and compared to something like the "screaming hands" synth riff it seems to make its point more through sheer repetition than any catchiness or aesthetic appeal. and where's the middle and bottom end? sebo k improves things quite a bit by adding a vocal hook and toning down the synth riff but i'm still not sure why this was a such a big track.

first jjak hogan EP is ... odd. not sure what the heck matt edwards was thinking when he put that one out. the production is pretty good and the raps are not awful - for disco rap, anyway - but there's a sense of, uh, fakeness about it that gives me the same feeling as when i hear like otto von schirach doing booty tracks or detroit grand pubahs or something like that. why not just do a NORE remix or something? i guess he was trying to pull an armand van helden. anyway it's growing on me but no way it's going to rank in the poll.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

i'm sorry i take that back. only "2 far advanced" is really any good, the other three tracks are really dire.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

i think its versatility is the simple answer to why the sebo k remix of "bell clap dance" was so big. you could make a similar claim about radio slave in general i.e., monotonic stomp = dj tool plus total hypnosis or psychedelia through repetition with subtle changes in color.

butter tickle (tricky), Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

... where color is the hookiness you refer to mjtb.

butter tickle (tricky), Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

did i say luke solomon was no good? i take it back, the "darkest secret" EP is grrreat!

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

i am fast running out of good things to say about this label.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

xpost that's what makes the fluegel remix of "my bleep" so devastating as well except he ups the ante by piling on the hooks and the bleeps. such a great remix!!

butter tickle (tricky), Sunday, 22 March 2009 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

xpost and new ways to say them. i feel like i could listen to some of these songs for the rest of my life. la monte young style, set up a house just playing rekids for eternity.

going for "next stop chicago." pulled it out again 2 weeksish ago and played out at a show and damn it still does the trick

andrew m., Sunday, 22 March 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

that said, there's a handful on here i've still yet to hear

andrew m., Sunday, 22 March 2009 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

serpiente cosmica - can a modern techno track be sunny balearic and warehouse industrial at the same time? THE TRACK THAT DARES TO ASK.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 22 March 2009 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

I don't care about any of these.

pipecock, Monday, 23 March 2009 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

nobody here cares about you

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 23 March 2009 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

funny, i woke up this morning with cristian vogel's jjak hogan remix running through my head, and for a minute i was like "what the fuck IS that"?
i'm glad you came around to luke solomon, vahid -- was surprised that you wrote his rekids releases off at first.

pshrbrn, Monday, 23 March 2009 09:36 (seventeen years ago)

was the sebo k remix of "bell clap dance" really all that big? i thought it was the og that received all of the accolades?

the andomat 3000 remix of "space invaders" on the darkest secret ep is fantastic.

rio (r1o natsume), Monday, 23 March 2009 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

"nobody here cares about you

― moonship journey to baja"

which means i must be doing something right.

pipecock, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

'next stop chicago' and 'bell clap dance' are the two i think of as the biggest monsters, but there are a few i'm going to have to check out first...

lex pretend, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

yeah it is weird phil, especially since i love MFF so much ... but i associate solomon's work on rekids with "ghouls", which just seems to me to be the worst of all worlds. endless herky-jerky loopy house that combines the annoyingness of fidget house with the sense of inconsequentiality of some freaks releases.

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

or i mean, a combination of the worst parts of the various worlds you can associate the freaks with.

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

runaway - brooklyn club jam

matt2, Monday, 23 March 2009 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

and there was i thinking that the recent 3 cd set, revolutions, wasn't going to get much love.
have to say, i've not really hit revolutions too much, other than then wink remix, and the excellent prins thomas remix of 'spirits' (more flutes !) which is just amazing.
also, i cant deny that the 3rd disc confirms that romans fluel remix of 'my bleep' still stands head and shoulders above a lot of the rest.

mark e, Monday, 23 March 2009 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

hey english ppl, fyi all these tracks are on spotify

just sayin, Monday, 23 March 2009 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

this thred inspired me to purchase "makes no sense" and both mixes are pretty damn good. been wanting to hear the revolutions 3-cd set, but so far i've only heard the sampler and i remember liking all the tracks EXCEPT for that christian vogel remix of jjak hogan

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 02:15 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i am stoked that there are so many responses but to be fair like 1/3rd of them are me.

psychgawsple have you heard the other mr g tracks on rekids? dude has gone from boring swedish loop techno to all-time killer status on rekids

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 04:49 (seventeen years ago)

his remix of "gemini" is super-ill

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 04:49 (seventeen years ago)

"tatankatan" = the only basic channel / chain reaction update of the late 00s that really matters?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 04:52 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for the Tantakatan Shed remix. Only anything on rekids I own, and the only thing on Rekids I've been really blown away by. Sorry Rekids/Radioslave, you're just not my thing (but when you are. . .)

mehlt, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 05:01 (seventeen years ago)

the only other stuff i've heard from mr. g are the "e.c.g.'d" mixes (my main exposure to this label is from the rekids one comp), which are also pretty dope- this isn't the boring swedish loop techno you're referring to is it? would like to hear "u askin?" though, esp after the kind words on this thread.

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 07:32 (seventeen years ago)

no, of course not. i'm talking about mr g circa 2000.

in honor of my poll, i made a rather shitty PO11 mix. (sorry, got carried away with flange and reverb at quite a few points, and the speed control on the low pass filter threw me for a loop, so to speak)

1. radio slave - dedication
2. radio slave - screaming hands (cosmo vitelli mix)
3. radio slave - secret base (rob mello mix)
4. cosmica serpiente - veinte tres
5. radio slave - grindhouse tool
6. radio slave - my bleep (roman flugel mix)
7. radio slave - weeze
8. radio slave - tantakatan
9. radio slave - screaming hands (wink remix)
10. mr g - u askin'
11. matt o brien - serotone version

http://www.sendspace.com/file/3v4kri

wish i'd made room for "no sleep vol 5" which has the other two chain reaction, (well, maurizio anywyay) updates that matter and spencer parker's "improvised minotaur", which is basically what like luciano or villalobos would sound like if they suddenly went wildly commercial. or maybe what a smith'n'hack remix of a villalobos track circa "the au harem d'archmede" might have sounded like.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

hey english ppl, fyi all these tracks are on spotify

i'm english btw and i appreciate this information

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

rio (r1o natsume), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Whole Rekids discog (maybe?) in a Spotify playlist:

http://open.spotify.com/user/smarmy/playlist/1tfLQYNse3QqpjJHegUxZ5

It's a bit annoying as the remixers aren't listed, on the whole, so you have to work stuff out with track times.

Will prob vote for something along the lines of the "cosmic meets minimal" connection that someone pointed out on the other Rekids thread in 2006 (!) or something.

Jamie T Smith, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

"was the sebo k remix of "bell clap dance" really all that big? i thought it was the og that received all of the accolades?"

i think that's correct, rio. i just got personally hooked on the remix.

"or maybe what a smith'n'hack remix of a villalobos track circa "the au harem d'archmede" might have sounded like"

could only imagine the swampy end of the au harem getting the smith n hack disco treatment.

moonship your mix has disappeared.

butter tickle (tricky), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

i took my wack mix down because mixes that seemed acceptable / abstract at 3 am sounded awful in the light of day ... will try to re-up an acceptable one ... any track requests?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

in particular "dedication" is a fucking beast (as are most live track edits, to be fair) to mix with the other tracks. but there were other nasty trainwrecks too.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

a sloppy 40 minute edit of "dedication" with added breaks and disco guitars after the hancock keys come in ;)

i think it'd be tough to do an all radio slave mix because so many of his tracks are all tension and little release (i think his misch masch kind of proves my point). so if i have a track request, it's less of a track thing than putting in less linear radio slave unless you drop stuff like "next stop chicago".

butter tickle (tricky), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

yeah "dedication" is really really difficult to mix.

butter tickle (tricky), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

especially if you are limited to rekids releases...

butter tickle (tricky), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

i never had a problem with "dedication" (and my mixing is usually pretty shaky). just mix out before the big riff comes in, during the long intro with those cool blippy noises

rio (r1o natsume), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

i understand what you're saying but then you're missing the majority of the track!

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

just remembered another gem hidden on the back of a luke solomon single - the prins thomas remix of "spirits"!

xp i mean mix out of the preceding track

rio (r1o natsume), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

I can't remember last time I mixed dedication but I don't remember it being too hard, sorry I know that's not what you want to hear here!

Local Garda, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

the heavy syncopation on the third beat just totally throws me.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

also i am going for long radio slave type mixes and the track tempo swings all over the place.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

i think what makes it hard is that it's got that slight shuffle, the snares that are basically a truncated break, and the bleepy bits with heavy reverb. those are all the things that make the track so great (and then there's the main theme), but there's a lot of uh, conflicting sonic information to slot into another track especially if the other track is more quantized

haha, xp

butter tickle (tricky), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 17:40 (seventeen years ago)
