this will be unpredictable

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

no it won't.

Mark G, Monday, 23 March 2009 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Better Things gets my vote.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 23 March 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

10. "Light My Fire" (live) (The Doors) – 3:15 57

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

Has anyone ever fathomed WHY the Doors cover exists?

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 23 March 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

Title track, but I love Karmacoma and Sly almost as much. I can't imagine ever wanting to play this album in its entirety again though.

Matt DC, Monday, 23 March 2009 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

I'm gonna have to listen to this all again before voting, but I'm pretty damn sure it's gonna be the yawnsome vote from me

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

I just played this last night for my mother-in-law, who basically fell in love with it and wanted to run off to a smoky den with a large drink to properly enjoy it.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

(Not quite as impressive as making my dad fall in love with Music Has A Right To Children the week before, though.)

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

nice!

can't wait for the mezzanine poll fwiw, if only so that i'll be given a platform to wax lyrical about the musical behemoth that is "group four"

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

"Protection" of course, what a massively great, affecting song.

Euler, Monday, 23 March 2009 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

Actually I kind of hope "Sly" wins.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

"Sly" is the track I've reached now, and it's easily the closest challenger to "Protection". Obviously wasn't listening first time I heard it.

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

hang on, what is the obvious choice meant to be here? my vote goes to 'sly', silver medal to 'better things'

lex pretend, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

obv choice = "Protection" (which I have no beef with, it's a fantastic song, but "Sly" also melts my heart; "Eurochild" does too but I am pretty certain that song isn't going to be anyone's first choice from this album)

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah this is just about the only Massive Attack album without an obvious choice on it.

Matt DC, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

mezzanine doesn't have an obvious choice

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

don't gimme any of that "teardrop" bs

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

anyway, i'm going with the obvious choice, "protection", sorry folks

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

i never really feel i "got" the hype around massive attack, but i just voted for "spying glass" when i meant to vote for "sly" which is my favourite MA track. Spying Glass ain't too bad though.

the next grozart, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, what's the obvious choice on Blue Lines, "Safe From Harm" or "Unfinished Sympathy"? Because I would pick "One Love".

xp: sorry dude but yr gonna have to deal with the "Teardrop" bs, particularly since there's a sizable contingent who think that's the only song on Mezzanine worth listening to

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

they all have one track which is more obvious by dint of being 10 times better known than the rest, but not in terms of quality - i don't think i'd go for any of the best known tracks.

lex pretend, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

my choices would be safe from harm/sly/inertia creeps

lex pretend, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

lol I should make a poll for 100th Window

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

("Small Time Shot Away")

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

"sly" was i think the first massive attack song i ever heard and i immediately loved it - remember the video being pretty cool as well

Thanks to america italy end up stuck with the poor people's madonn (donna rouge), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

lol i totally forgot 100th window ever existed

lex pretend, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

a sizeable contingent of TOTAL RONG...and hey I quite LIKE "Teardrop"!

"Sly" was my fairly close 2nd-choice, if that means anything.

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

haha according to Wikipedia they're recording a new album featuring, among others, Hope Sandoval, Tom Waits, Mike Patton and Mos Def

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

god the strings on 'sly' are so great

and nicolette's voice! and that drip-drip sinister tempo

lex pretend, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

Better Things seconded.

chap, Monday, 23 March 2009 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

I'd vote for either Risingson or Angel on Mezzanine. 100th Window doesn't exist after Futureproof.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

lets do a no protection poll next

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

I might go "Dissovled Girl" on Mezzanine, I'm not sure yet.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

I just don't get how you can claim "Teardrop" is the only thing worth listening to when you've just borne witness to "Risingson", for a start

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

I always had a quite different tracklisting to the original order:

Sly
Protection
Three
Spying Glass
Karmacoma
Better Things
Weather Storm
Eurochild
Heat Miser
THE END

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

vote-wise, Protection beats Sly just by the tip of Tracey Thorn's nose

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

I think Tracey sings "Better Days" much better than she sings "Protection" but the musical synergy running between everything on "Protection" elevates it.

fuck it I should stop equivocating and vote "Sly"

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

'Protection' also has the best music video of the 90s

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

oh it's up there

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Monday, 23 March 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

Listened to the whole album again just to make sure, but yeah, title track.

WmC, Monday, 23 March 2009 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

i love the whole album except for the Doors cover thing. i voted Protection because i am boring, but i always loved Weather Storm as well.

pipecock, Monday, 23 March 2009 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

Title track, every time.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 23 March 2009 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

Doesn't get much better than "Protection".

Geir Hongro, Monday, 23 March 2009 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

turtles all the way down (Face of Wolf), Monday, 23 March 2009 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

Mezzanine would be one of those poll threads where everyone reps for Risingson or Inertia Creeps or something and then Teardrop wins by a 20-vote margin.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

Fwiw I'd go for Inertia Creeps as well but still.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

Sly

ABSOLUTELY NO SCRUBS WHATSOEVER, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

I'm intensely curious as to the Gen Y consensus on Massive Attack.

Mirror-spangled elephant head (J@cob), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:08 (seventeen years ago)

For me, these are some of the few records that despite being consistently bludgeoned with in the worst possible contexts, I still unreservedly like.

Mirror-spangled elephant head (J@cob), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:10 (seventeen years ago)

for a long time it was 'sly' for me (except the annoying stringy solo right at the end), which btw was the LEAD SINGLE so no, not really an obscure choice, but now it's 'protection', which is pretty much perfect.

it's not their fault that this album got played to death. 'protection' itself i don't feel got that rinsed out tho.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

wish they'd done MORE stuff like 'light my fire' tbh, rather than proto-generic trip-hop ish like 'weather storm' and 'better things'. love the wild bunch comp on strut.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

Am I right in thinking that 'Protection' is basically the song that invented Dido?

Dom Cry For Me, Passantino (NickB), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

not really.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

i have only heard about three dido songs though. 'white flag' is pretty dece.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

i thought that said diplo

s1ocki, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

Am I the only one who voted "Karmacoma"???

More importantly, does anyone know what he actually says after "karmacoma" in the song? I like to pretend it's "Jamaican aroma" because it's funnier that way, but I'm ready for the truth.
