"The werewolf was a gentleman who was a helpful influence," recalled Hurley in a 1996 interview with Boston fanzine Popwatch. "He showed me that there were others who would never fit in. It seemed that once the snout and facial hair and pointed ears appeared, there wasn't really a realistic chance that the guy would ever be able to have a lovely wife and a good home." (A later version of the song swaps in the line, "How I love the meat as I tear it off the bones.")

There was also a recent-ish piece in the Wire.
One of the best American songwriters of his generation, imho he has not made a bad record.

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

hmm thanks, looks good.

I haven't been able to get into this record :(

must endeavor to persevere

Snop Snitchin, Friday, 7 May 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

Hah, this is funny. I picked up the reissue last summer. I don't even remember this thread or posting in it.
This album is a bona-fide classic. I may have voted for Grand Canyon Line, it's my favorite one to sing along to for some reason.
There are no losers here, though.

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 May 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

my man loves hurley, he got me into him. the first time he put on 'long journey' i thought it was townes van zandt, lol

I thought "escargot" was a snail? (Matt P), Friday, 7 May 2010 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

beautiful record.

ian, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

hi-fi snock might be just as good! "eyes eyes"!

ian, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Dude has a remarkable discography.
The above mentioned Long Journey is great. Watertower, Have Moicy, Snockgrass, Weatherhole...all awesome imo.
And there's more where that came from, too.
He's my go-to for comfort music.

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

Wolfways is great too!

Either I missed this poll or I was the one vote for "Open Up".

I am not as big a fan of this particular LP as a lot of folks here are, but a few songs are definitely absolute top level genius.

bug holocaust (sleeve), Friday, 7 May 2010 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

I have to get it. I'm willing to become a Hurley completist.

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 May 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

Open Up is another one that is really fun to sing along to.

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 May 2010 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

"eyes eyes" dude. gonna listen to hi-fi snock when i get in to the store later

underwater, please (bear, bear, bear), Friday, 7 May 2010 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 May 2010 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

this one is so great. wanna say troubled waters is my fav here but it's not really a singles album... and the closing track is so pretty too

sonderangerbot, Friday, 7 May 2010 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

"Hi-Fi Snock Uptown" poll would be tough
