i don't really like this album all that much but it's one of the biggest pop albums of the decade, in terms of chart numbers at least, and i don't think there is a definitive best single of the four big ones.

i haven't quite warmed to dead and gone as much as the other three, all of which have probably spent time as my favorite. going with whatever you like for being so goofy and charming.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

"Dead and Gone," by far. Paper Trail is the first time one of my favorite albums of the year had much better tracks than its first THREE singles.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

Whatever You Like >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the other shit, "Swing Ya Rag" better than all 4

yeah let me issue a preemptive apology to al ship for not letting him vote for "swing ya rag"

i'm gonna vote for 'live your life', i think it has some good lines like

Allergic to the counterfeit, impartial to the politics.
Articulate but still would grab a nigga by the collar quick.

what's haapenin is an awful and annoying song

Hoos Passansteeno (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

except substitute "kinda like" for "Whatever You Like."

Paper Trail is the first time one of my favorite albums of the year had much better tracks than its first THREE singles.

the best paper trail track didn't even make the album ('let my beat pound')

i thought the album was little more than solid when i first heard it, but once you learn where to use the skip button it's a pretty awesome listen

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

live your life also has the best chorus

id go, live your life>>>whatever you like>>swagga like us>>>>>dead and gone

Hoos Passansteeno (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

'whatever you like' is just hella catchy and makes me think about having sex with t.i.

'live your life' has the WORST chorus b/c it's fucking numa numa

i think they use the sample aight, i mean it's the definition of a gimmick. if it didn't open w/ "myyaaheee" it would be hard to tell that numa numa is even being sampled i think

Leif ericsonned (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

'swagga like us' is such a botch job, not even cuz it's MIA but b/c the echoey loop is set up so well but then just SITS THERE hammering away at your skull and you start hating it halfway through. oh yeah and all concerned barely brought their C game

they looked hot at the grammys though!

(except m.i.a. - pregnant bellu and shades A+, henry fucking holland atrocity FAIL)

haha thank you. "What Up, What's Haapnin'" too, that's as much a single as "Swagga Like Us"! it actually had a video!

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

yeah when they're all THERE you can look and admire and not bother listening to their words - was it you who said something about how 'swagga like us' sounds really good until you actually listen to it? that was otm

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

i guess it wasn't the star power part cuz that shit happens at the BET awards all the time but i think it's cuz it was in front of tons of old white people and like my parents were watching and stuff, i don't mind those four (or that song in terms of all four rapping and they were way into it) representing 'us' for a lack of a better term

i think it was tape store lex

Hoos Passansteeno (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

out of these 4 choices i only like "Live Your Life." ordering the other 3 would be Russian roulette, but right now I hate "Dead And Gone" the most.

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

of these, swagga. i hear live your life and whatever you like as being the same song, now that i think about it. dead and gone is ok but i'm getting kind of tired of the to-what-degree-am-i-a-reformed-thug trope in general from t.i.

i like most of the album tracks better than most of the singles

laying | (goole), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

im happy im not that the only one who hates "dead and gone"

Hoos Passansteeno (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

i used to think i just disliked "Dead And Gone" in the context of the album because it comes off kind of redundant with the two better contemplative tracks immediately before it (and a whole mess elsewhere on the album). but really it just sucks, may have the worst bridge ever written. i thought i'd at least be bumping albums tracks like "Every Chance I Get" or "I'm Illy" 6 months later but i dunno...the CD's still in the car, maybe i'll throw it on tonight.

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

"Live Your Life" has grown on me massively through radioplay, it makes me absurdly happy when it comes on. Such a good song to turn up in the car.

But I think I'd go "Whatever You Like" --> "Live Your Life" --> "Dead & Gone" --> "Swagga Like Us".

"Live Your Life" >>>> "Swagga Like Us" > "Dead and Gone" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Whatever You Like", which is a dopey and insipid piece of shit

"Live Your Life" puts me on some KIP shit every time I hear it XD

The-Reverend (rev), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

i haven't enjoyed "Live Your Life" on the radio in a while but when i put on the CD today it still sounded great in the context of the album. forgot that the bridge is in a different place on the album version and there's a whole Rihanna outro that's not in the video.

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

"whatever you like" off that list, but "no matter what" is still my favorite single from the record.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 26 March 2009 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

"live your life" >> "swagga like us" >> "whatever you like" >> "dead and gone"

i don't mind "dead and gone" but tim has written that song 20 times already!

"swing ya rag" & "no matter what" are better than any of them

turn my head to the west, see some butthurt to my side

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 April 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

the awkwardly paced "...still nobody in sight" and the syllable-stuffing nonsense of "swallow that pill that they call pride" make such a strong case for Justin easing back on the songwriting and just singing for a while

#miap4ksclovetofu (some dude), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 21:49 (fifteen years ago)

don't really think that song is beloved enough that dissing it can be considered challops btw, unless you think any hit song is above criticism

#miap4ksclovetofu (some dude), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

Well, for a long time I was beguiled by how good Justin's voice sounds on this.

I can't think of another album I've liked in recent years whose singles were the worst tracks.

Throwing Muses are reuniting for my next orgasm! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

i really like "dead & gone" - though the still-easily-charming "whatever you like" is my fav paper trail single - but the best song from this era was "let my beat pound" which er wasn't on the album

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

there's some nice vibrato on the chorus, but the melody still feels kind of dreary and unpleasant to me

definitely a few good non-singles on this album but not as many as on most other T.I. albums

what a tragedy for gingers (The Reverend), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

this is going to be a 'you had to be there' thing, but i was first exposed to this song when a dude sitting next to me at a call center i was working at was singing the hook, apparently before it had become a single, and he had an argument with this girl over if it would be a hit or not. now i can't think of it without laughing imagining him switching between singing it pretty passionately and reading the script of the survey we were doing that night.
