I'm intrigued by the sound of this album. Could be amazing, could be very dull. Mentions of Prince, Scritti Politti, Liquid Liquid and Arthur Russell have got my interest, the mention of TV On The Radio is definitely a bad thing. Anyone heard it?

Kudos for picking a band name and title that make it seemingly impossible to find on yer modern illegal file sharing software, though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

UK post-house-cum-electro-soul-cum-rave-pop act

unaustralian (jabba hands), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

i saw them open for Doves last week. not much of an opinion. good but something didn't click. probably pretty decent on record.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:35 (sixteen years ago)

That's a pretty dreadful piece of writing actually, you'd think Time Out would have access to better music writers than that.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

zing?

unaustralian (jabba hands), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:43 (sixteen years ago)

"our very own TV On The Radio. Strands of Prince, Radiohead, Talking Heads, Bilal, Scritti Politti, The Police, Burial, Liquid Liquid and Arthur Russel"

straightola, Thursday, 26 March 2009 10:19 (sixteen years ago)

betting this'll just be straight-up electrodribble

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 March 2009 10:20 (sixteen years ago)

this interview here says it's the free download on itunes this week - http://www.shook.fm/content/2009/03/the-invisible-warrior-sound/

i'm at work so cant check

just sayin, Thursday, 26 March 2009 10:25 (sixteen years ago)

so it is. depressing shuffly beat, twangy guitar, horrible mumbling tramp male vocal occasionally backed up by horrible twee childlike female vocal. DNW.

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 March 2009 11:31 (sixteen years ago)

thats a shame, herberts my favourite producer ever and it kills me when even he cant save sub standard material

straightola, Thursday, 26 March 2009 11:36 (sixteen years ago)

he's also involved w/ that mikachu album right? i havent heard it but she seems annoying

just sayin, Thursday, 26 March 2009 11:44 (sixteen years ago)

i could hear the faintest trace of herbertisms - a slight tinge of jazziness, something in the bass - in that track but tbh if i hadn't known about it beforehand i wouldn't have been able to tell. sounds more like gomez or some shit

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 March 2009 12:21 (sixteen years ago)

That'll be cause the bassist is a jazz bassist, dude.

This sounds like AR Kane updated for 2009. I quite like it. I might buy the album.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 26 March 2009 12:58 (sixteen years ago)

This is REALLY like AR Kane.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 26 March 2009 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

interest renewed

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 26 March 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

The album is kind of interesting but I'm not sure how much I actually like it, trippy and expansive in some places, funky and bass-driven in others. The single works better in the context of the album. The production is great, muddy and warm, but I wish they'd make a bit more noise from time to time. It's all a bit hushed even when they're doing the loud bits.

I hear the AR Kane in there. It's a bit more... tasteful though? Possibly because two thirds of the band are jazz musicians, possibly all of them. It reminds me a bit of In Rainbows as well, something I can't quite put my finger on.

I think you'd really like it Nick (Steve too maybe) - I probably like it as well but there's a sort of 'aimed-directly-at-broadsheet-readers' social stigma I'm trying to get over. The same feeling I get when I walk through Broadway Market ;)

Matt DC, Saturday, 28 March 2009 13:00 (sixteen years ago)

'London Girl' and 'Time Waits' are probably the best two tracks but the whole thing works pretty well together.

Matt DC, Saturday, 28 March 2009 13:02 (sixteen years ago)

Off a couple of hungover listens this morning, I really like this.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 4 April 2009 09:18 (sixteen years ago)

Pretty awesome on headphones. Singer dude is so much like Rudi from AR Kane. Occasional glimpses of "we can REALLY fucking play" muso-ness, but it's not that bothering to be honest.

Some of the reviews I've come across of this are horrifically written (when I can find a review, that is).

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 5 April 2009 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

stopped reading at "post-house"

fauxmarc, Sunday, 5 April 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

This has got pretty much fuck-all to do with house, let alone post-house, aside from the fact that the producer might once have been dancing.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 5 April 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

Matt, what you thinking now? After several solid listens this is really growing on me, after already liking it from the off. There's more variety than there first appears.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 April 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

Louis might adore this.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 06:37 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't actually listened to it since I last posted. I found its general air of self-conscious worthiness a bit difficult to get past but 90% of my problem is with the voice and the lyrics. Dude can almost certainly sing, but he should put his back into it a bit more.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 08:35 (sixteen years ago)

I agree that there's definitely a sense of self-conscious worthiness to it, but I've pretty much got past this; with a bit of oomph from an amplifier there's a really nice visceral quality to this. Lyrics are occasionally... awkward, and voice similarly a bit too delicate at times. Last two tracks are wicked, though, and make my misgivings dissipate.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

The new wave of Acid Jazz.

Stevie T, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 08:44 (sixteen years ago)

There is a whiff of that - perhaps captured in Matt's "self-conscious worthiness" descriptor - but I honestly think this is too good and too interesting to be written off as tastefully uninteresting. Tom Herbert's too exciting a bassist to be written off as tasteful.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 08:52 (sixteen years ago)

erm, the "baby doll" single is pretty good. will check it.

fauxmarc, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

...yeah this is good

fauxmarc, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

three years pass...

Did no-one here enjoy The Invisible's album Rispah from last year? It's good! The only mention on ILM I can see is on that thread where Scott listens to The Fly's Top 50 (he digs it). I came to it via the Jessie Ware album. If you like Devotion (the track), or maybe the last couple of Radiohead albums, you should maybe give it a listen.

Supposed Former ILM Lurker (WeWantMiles), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

three years pass...

New album is really good, features Jessie Ware and Anna Calvi and makes me think of AR Kane and Massive Attack.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 2 July 2016 09:00 (nine years ago)

I really liked their first album but the new one didnt make much of an impression on me tbh

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Saturday, 2 July 2016 09:37 (nine years ago)

I'm the opposite way round - this is the first time I've ever really been feeling it with them.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 2 July 2016 13:13 (nine years ago)

Petridis gave the new one a glowing lead review a few weeks ago, which prompted me to pick it up - https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/jun/09/the-invisible-patience-review-complex-and-brilliantly-original-pop

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 4 July 2016 12:29 (nine years ago)

I liked the single with Ware. Should prob investigate the rest

art baengels (monotony), Monday, 4 July 2016 13:05 (nine years ago)

I got Rispah off the back of enjoying the new one, and I might like that most of all actually.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 4 July 2016 13:06 (nine years ago)

I regret starting this thread, everything I've subsequently heard from these dudes is just so... beige sounding.

Matt DC, Monday, 4 July 2016 15:12 (nine years ago)

It's ok, the guy's a good producer. I wish it had a little more impact though.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Monday, 4 July 2016 16:44 (nine years ago)

This is the first one I've heard of theirs, by the way.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Monday, 4 July 2016 16:44 (nine years ago)

i think this (new) album is very pretty sounding? it doesn't sound the same but I can imagine people relating or rehating to it in the same way as with the Rhye album.

Tim F, Saturday, 9 July 2016 08:57 (nine years ago)

Yeah, sonically this is delicious. I'm not totally sold on the songs yet though.
