wow. this is my favourite madonna album, and 'deeper and deeper' is my default favourite madonna track...so i guess it's that. though 'bad girl' is probably my favourite madonna ballad.

i love the persona she projects throughout this...ice so cold it burns. there's some great stuff in the ilx archives on this album, am too sleepy to go looking for it now though...

shout out for the closing double whammy, though. i don't think i've ever heard madonna sound as shellshocked and empty and angry as on 'in this life', and then 'secret garden' as this weird escapism following it, a retreat into her own mind and body.

Love the collision of the block synth chords, piano, and Madonna's flat singing on "In This Life."

Why's it so hard to please one another?

Not that I can imagine all that many voting for "Did You Do It?"

My favourites, in roughly descending order:

1) Deeper & Deeper - who finest song
2) Bad Girl - her finest ballad
3) Waiting - adore the production on this, its throbbing deepness, this is kinda the vibe Janet wanted to nail subsequently on the darker moments of Janet but it's done better here
4) Erotica - such a marvellous, eerie statement of intent. the production!

But really I love everything here, even "Words" which I used to think was a bit silly.

The ILM lovefest over this album always bewilders me, and I actually consider myself a Madonna fan. It's one of my least favorite of her albums, down with Music.

The early 90s are a pop blindspot for me. Or deadspot, rather. Everything was so house-y and monotonous.

I guess I'll go with Bad Girl, but I wouldn't rank it even in her top 5 ballads.

I love the beat and synth strings -- of a piece with the lyrics. It's like second-tier Deee-Lite.

Oh, soooooooory. I guess I should've specified it was a garbage era for US pop and r&b radio. Thankfully it was brief, except the next things that came along were post-New Jack Swing harmony groups and post-Grunge urgency rock and that was no better.

Basically, 1990-95 or so in the US was a TERRIBLE time for popular mainstream music.

Yes, pop radio between 1990-1992 paled in comparison to the glories of Daniel Ash, The Railway Children, and Jesus Jones.

I feel sorry for "Waiting", "Thief of Hearts" and "Secret Garden". I love all those tracks. The results make the album seem really lopsided, but I guess it really just points to the consensus surrounding "Deeper & Deeper".

When I first got this record, I pretty much only listened to "Deeper & Deeper" and the title track, so these results don't surprise me much. I did vote for "Fever," tho, for shitting all over a classic and being arrogantly housey and bleak.

Yeah the version of "Fever" is surprisingly great! It's the most Erotica of all the songs on the album, which is oddly fitting.

(this would make an interesting thread: cover versions which, by dint of being a cover, somehow capture the vibe of an album better than all the original songs)
