To choose one of these songs would be so fucking hard. I know the best song is NOT Rub Till It Bleeds, Hook, Dry or Ecstacy. And it's probably not either of the Man-Sizes, much as I like them. And it can't be Yuri-G, which is great but I would never pick it as the absolute best song here.

But the rest is too good. The first three songs are so creepy and claustrophobic. This is the best record I listen to for real. And Highway, 50ft Queenie, Me-Jane and Snake are all so fucking exciting I can't take it. I think Me-Jane going into Snake is my favourite part of the record. Rid of Me is an unbeatable first track. There's too much here, I dunno. I couldn't choose one of these, the whole thing's unbelievable.

electric "Man Size" followed hard by title track

Matos W.K., Friday, 27 March 2009 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

I love this record to death but Me-Jane. For the same reason I would have voted Hair on Dry.

there's a big metaphor going on in which pussy is medicine (a hoy hoy), Friday, 27 March 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

There are probably four or five tracks that could be my favourite on any given day, but on most of those given days it would be "Rub Till It Bleeds".

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 27 March 2009 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

title track

mookieproof, Friday, 27 March 2009 23:33 (sixteen years ago)

Missed, narrowly over Dry

kornrulez6969, Friday, 27 March 2009 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

no song makes me want to strut around and punch shit like 50 ft queenie does, so that song wins
i love this album so much

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 27 March 2009 23:35 (sixteen years ago)

Rid of Me

akm, Saturday, 28 March 2009 00:04 (sixteen years ago)

I know the best song is NOT Rub Till It Bleeds, Hook, Dry or Ecstacy.

Wrong.

Voted for "Dry" easily.

ilxor, Saturday, 28 March 2009 04:49 (sixteen years ago)

Dry is a super duper song.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 28 March 2009 05:27 (sixteen years ago)

God I can't believe ILX is gonna make me play this album again in the next couple of days in order to decide. Too intense. Deep breath.

Prodigal Son of the Gay ILX threads (Bimble), Saturday, 28 March 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)

Yuri G now and forevah.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 28 March 2009 05:30 (sixteen years ago)

50ft Queenie. Just. Title track REALLY close behind.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 28 March 2009 07:30 (sixteen years ago)

my 2nd least favourite PJH album but this is still such a tough choice! it's between 'me jane', 'yuri g', '50ft queenie' and 'man-size' i think - title track disqualified on the grounds of preferring the 4-track demos version. and yeah what bimble said, i hadn't been planning to listen to this any time soon but am probably gonna have to now...

"Yuri-G" oh so narrowly ahead of "Missed" and the title track. But

no song makes me want to strut around and punch shit like 50 ft queenie does

The whole album has this effect on me: in a fucked-up way it's a great motivational album.

Euler, Saturday, 28 March 2009 12:45 (sixteen years ago)

rid of me, followed by.. yuri-g, 50 ft queenie

prob my favorite album in high school, but haven't played it in a while! getting it out again today, definitely.

I do love the production on this record but sometimes I wish it wasn't quite so RARGH so I could listen to it more often. The way I do listen to it, as it is, leaves me a bit shellshocked and not quite prepared to go through the whole shebang again for a while.

i think it's 'missed'

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 11:54 (sixteen years ago)

"Missed" second. Great songs wall to wall, but there's something especially fragile/mercurial about that one, plus I've always halfway suspected it might secretly be about Jesus, which is always good for extra points.

DLee, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

Or rather "seconded."

DLee, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

I think these results are proof of what a fantastic album this is.

Temperamental Catstrings (Bimble), Thursday, 2 April 2009 02:37 (sixteen years ago)

No votes for "Snake" is really, really surprising!

amanda i am obsessed with that performance!!! polly jean screaming LICK MY LEGS I'M ON FIRE LICK MY LEGS OF DESIRE over and over again as jay leno becomes increasingly uncomfortable (i imagine) is like something i made up in my head. perfect!

horseshoe, Friday, 20 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

his reaction to her is just so pathetic, and she is so gracious and calm about it that i just feel inspired
can't help it

La Lechera, Friday, 20 January 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

haha it's so clear he's trying to keep the interview on safe ground and then she has to go and mention castration!

horseshoe, Friday, 20 January 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

i love you forever, p.j. harvey

horseshoe, Friday, 20 January 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

i wouldn't be critical of him if he had just been like "whoa i am blown away by that" but he had to take it to "what do your dates think" and that THAT! is where i point and laugh at him for being dumb

La Lechera, Friday, 20 January 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

that's amazing <3

so is the performance that goes with it, hadn't seen it before
