Inspired by Cunga in the Third Eye Blind thread:

I can't stand the affected English accent but when "Semi-Charmed" or "How's It Going to Be" come on the radio I'm glad. I'm gonna pull a Nostradamus and predict that late 90s alt-grunge-make-out-rock ballads like the aforementioned "How's It Going to Be" or the Goo Goo Doll's "Iris" will eventually become the "Don't Stop Believin'" are-we-being-ironic-or-not-i-dunno anthems of a future generation.

A new category of music to go with the are-we-being-ironic-or-not generation? It doesn't happen as much with 60s music as it does with 70s or 80s music, does it?

And as I said there, I think 'I Want It That Way' already fits this category - whenever I hear it around groups of friends, everyone breaks out singing and dancing in a semi-ironic / nobody is quite sure how much of it is a joke way (since everyone actually likes the song.)

I think you're right about "I Want It That Way" but what other anthems did the late 90s turn out? What was the equivalent to arena rock? "Hanging By A Moment"?

Aside from "Jumper" being 3eb's anthemiest anthem, I think Stone Temple Pilots "Interstate Love Song" makes the grade (does '95 count as being late 90s?). Similarly, Oasis' "Champagne Supernova." "Inside Out" by Eve6? "The Freshman" by the Verve Pipe, maybe...
