I want to speak in favor of this poll. Those polls with every last fuckin possible option that anybody might possibly object to having been left out are really boring and obnoxious. Zeno has the right idea.

My favorite here is "Knights in Satan's Service" but that's partly because I read an article about Kiss being dead and replaced by imposters when I was nine, in some kind of Tiger Beat special thing at a newstand, and it scared the shit out of me, and that the rumor never caught on or anything seemed to make it even scarier.

The article had what pretended to be a transcript of a tape recovered from the wreck, like a black box recording documenting the real Kiss's last moments on earth, and it was fucking awesome.

Yeah, I kind of remember that thing about KISS being replaced too, reading that in some teen magazine. For years I've been trying to understand whether those kinds of weird stories were just more common then, since it was harder to corroborate information, or whether it was just a function of me being 7 or 8 and not being able to understand context or possibly sarcasm.

Easy there, JD. I really wasn't expecting a yahoo news thing to bring up the Rod Stewart/whoever rumor.

Until 55 minutes ago, I thought the Manson/Monkees rumor was God's truth.

I remember people bitching about Marylin Mason opening for Danzig when the Wonder Years was still on the air. Wonder when that one cropped up.

Just last week I'd considered polling my own contributions to that thread, then decided that would be too egotistical, even tho I'd readily confess to now hating 40% of 'em

The Manson/Wonder Years rumor seems like a latter day version of the Alice Cooper/Leave It to Beaver rumor.

Taking them together with the KISS rumors, I guess it's easier/desirable to make up stories about guys in heavy make-up. I wonder if there were any good King Diamond rumors.

Depending on how you define "slept together", the Bowie/Jagger one may be true.

I don't think the stomach pump thing can be called a "great music mystery", because originally it was an urban legend about an anonymous cheerleader, before it was attributed to various pop stars.

Personally though, I would've included these urban legends too:

* Mama Cass choked on a sandwhich (a lot of people still seem to think this one is true).

* Frank Zappa ate his own shit in a gross-out contest with Alice Cooper (or Ozzy Osbourne).

* You can hear the voice of someone being murdered in the studio in Ohio Players' "Love Rollercoaster".

Not just a sandwich, a ham sandwich.

What I love about the Zappa legend is that now it's hard to imagine his puerile antics could ever have been menacing enough to fuel such a rumor.

It's the Rod Stewart/stomach pump rumour that I don't understand - because it relies on somehow believing in the face of overwhelming evidence that Rod is/was gay.

I think the stomach pump speaks to a Freudian need in het American males to dismiss foppish European guys from having any real appeal to the ladies. I know in my high school Duran Duran were generally considered fags. The boys don't like it, but the little girls understand.

What about the Ozzy rumor that he threw a bunch of puppies into the audience and wouldn't start singing till they were all dead?

Ozzy was a cottage industry with these things because he really did bite that bat. After that, anything seemed possible.

Also because with his drinking related blackout problems back then, people would say to him "hey Ozzy, you remember last week when you did XYZ?", and he'd be "err...?"

I took a class on teaching sex ed a couple months ago and apparently the stomach pumping myth is still circulating but in recent years the "victim" has been Lil' Kim. lol.

The Ozzy/ants story is in Motley Crue's autobiography. Osbourne claims to have no recollection of the incident.
The person in the stomach pump story depends mostly on when you first heard it - Elton John, Bon Jovi, Jagger, Bowie, Alanis Morrisette, Lil Kim, etc., etc..

Right, of course. The teacher was just saying that in this area Lil Kim is the one she hears most often from teens.

Not to get all "Back in my day...", but that story is way better with Rod Stewart. He will never be topped when it comes to urban legends involving gastric lavage.
