yeah i like this, wayne flows on this but he does well with these empty beats (weezyana mixtape is best example of this)

the Busta video is cute w/ him wearing crazy "Woo-Ha" era hats n shit but he actually captured the energy of his videos from back then much better with "Don't Touch Me" without it being straight homage

T-Pain has definitely plateaued but I think it's a little silly to wonder if he's over this soon after "Blame It." his chart impact isn't any more scattered and occasional this year than it was last year.

"blame it" is of course one of his biggest hits ever, he's also on that shitty maino joint that is only a hit because of t-pain and otherwise he has just as many nothing singles as usual - ace hood, latter day lil kim, glasses malone, busta etc. i think you'll know he's done when his solo stuff stops peaking in the top 40, and more to the point when his solo stuff stops peaking like... inside the top 5 on r&b

i remember a great Ozone article with him right when he was starting to get huge and he came off as a totally likeable nerd
'plateaued' is the right word, but he's still had a more serious and lasting impact than, say, Lil' Jon and that's saying something.

yeah i mean, every big hitmaker who reaches a certain level gets those 2-3 years of ubiquity, and rarely drop off the face of the earth after that (Lil Jon's an exception because label drama killed his momentum), even Pharrell or whoever still sells a lot of beats no matter how 'over' you might think of them as

possible exception for the evergreen producer is Timbaland, but that's exception to prove the rule

well even Timbaland has had his fallow periods and times when it felt like he was on a long slow fade to irrelevence -- he just happened to have 2 or 3 peaks instead of 1

or 4 or 5?

i'm thinking very specifically of the first mid-90s boom, then the 2nd one w/ different styles circa 2001, then the Danja-assisted stuff from '06 onward -- imo anything in between was either runoff or anticipation of one of those peaks, or an aforementioned fallow periods -- but sorry i shouldn't get too OCD about it.
