To answer the question, I'm out of touch with both these days, but Pete Rock for his two LPs with CL Smooth, which are fantastic. Unfashionably, I think I prefer the second.

w/o CL Smooth this time, oh well.

Pete Rock: always felt the CL Smooth stuff was boring, (specially that end-of-night-and-we're-getting-a-little-emotional hiphop club staple 'T.R.O.Y.'), but he did put a great big-fun single out in 1996 as part of shortlived INI project called 'Props'; last thing I heard was a 12" with Inspectah Deck a couple of years ago where Rock had embarassingly changed up his production style to rip off both the RZA and DJ Premier.

Large Professor: probably only deserves any kind of respect for introducing Nas to the world on Main Source album track 'Live At The B-B-Q'; has been promising a solo album for at least 7 years, with accompanying bad singles on a multitude of labels; now signed to Matador, which maybe says it all.

I'll go with Pete Rock cuz he doesn't always rap on his records.

INI is wack as fuck. Beats are boring and dudes on the mic are lames.

Deda lp has some real good shit on there like "blah uno", "everyman" and "baby pa".

"Wanted dead or alive" Large Pro remix is one of the best beats i ever heard.

"Vagina diner" > "breaking atoms" (just).

"Life is like a dice game" > any of the Large Pro beats on "illmatic", although i never understood why some faggots think "one time 4 your mind" is weak.

"All souled out" ep is better than "mecca and the soul brother".

"Slow down" Pete Rock remix > the original

That Large Pro album from the 90s was pretty wack but the 3 12"s from it rule.

Slept on Large Pro beats : Akinyele-coochie (his remake/tribute to "juicy")...Neek The Exotic-muthafuckin' man.

Slept on Pete Rock beats : Jamal-fades 'em all remix...Bumpy Knux-industry shakedown.

"Soul survivor 2" was underrated. "Beef" by Krumbsnatcha was my shit, that opening joint with dude rhymin' like Last Poets over the wah-wah guitar was bananas, RZA+GZA joint, C.L joints were dope and even Kweli was listenable.

I can't really call it between 'em. I was gonna say that Pete hasn't dropped anything as wack as "first class" lp but the Akinyele joint on that shits on the entire INI album.

I saw Pete Rock DJ once, it was so much fun.

Still difficult to choose. The deciding factor might be that Large Professor didn't manage to make a group of shitty irish degenerates sound listenable like Pete Rock did with his remix of "jump around".

There was a Pete & C.L remix of "family affair" by Mary J. from a few years back which i was really feelin'.

That C.L "bars of fury" track from last year which he jacked the beat from that 2nd Pete Rock instrumental album after they started beefin' again with the chopped up Al Green sample was also great.
