Possibly my favorite compilation of all time.

Vote for your favorite artist, not necessarily on the Harmony box, but in general. Me, I love five of these artists to death and am rapidly getting into the sixth, and cannot decide. So, you tell me who is best.

Also a good place for general discussion of these artists, if anything comes to mind.

Nice review on AMG, for those uninitiated: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:hcfyxq9kldhe~T1

ilxor, Monday, 30 March 2009 21:39 (sixteen years ago)

I only wish I could have done said review. Tossup between FSA and Roy.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 30 March 2009 21:43 (sixteen years ago)

I own this vinyl box set!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 30 March 2009 21:46 (sixteen years ago)

I vote Bardo Pond

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 30 March 2009 21:46 (sixteen years ago)

I own this reissued on CD!

Original vinyl box set is super rare, isn't it?

I f'd up the word rear (Z S), Monday, 30 March 2009 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, it cost me a fortune about 5 or 6 years ago. Worth every penny though.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 30 March 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

Kinda hyperrare on vinyl, yes. I have the CD.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 30 March 2009 21:50 (sixteen years ago)

Tossup between FSA and Roy.

Next poll? The wondrous FSA/Roy split. Just for you, Ned. ;-)

ilxor, Monday, 30 March 2009 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

When this album came out, FSA were the best of the lot, but now it's Bardo Pond, easily.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 30 March 2009 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

Just listened to the Harmony box for the third time this week and if I were voting for best track on the box, it would be Roy Montgomery. That piece of his is absolutely stunning, stops time when I hear it.

ilxor, Monday, 30 March 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

For sure, Roy Montgomery's track is the best one. I voted for the bands in general though!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 30 March 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

Bought the vinyl box direct from Drunken Fish when it was first released. Still one of my fave releases from anyone. The Roy piece was my favorite for a long time, but not necessarily my favorite of his in general (either the Varispeed, the E.N.D. single, or his live set at Aron's/Terrastock II would be #1). Actually, a Roy singles poll would be pretty worthwhile.

Now, the most compelling piece on this is the Charalambides one.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 30 March 2009 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

his live set at Aron's/Terrastock II

If you heard this in person I am waaaay beyond jealous...

ilxor, Monday, 30 March 2009 23:00 (sixteen years ago)

Def. voting charalambides on this, even though Bardo Pond were a group I got into earlier and had seriously influenced my listening habits from about age 14 onward.... Former ILX user "ddb" gave me his old copy of this box on vinyl. love it.

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 03:26 (sixteen years ago)

Only band/artist on this I'm lukewarm about is Jessamine, whose proper LPs have never gone much for me.

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 03:32 (sixteen years ago)

(listening to LMC side now, fwiw.)

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

For me that first Jessamine s/t album on Kranky ranks up there with the best of any works by these artists.

ilxor, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

orly.
will have to give it a shot.

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 03:57 (sixteen years ago)

will roy montgomery ever release anything ever again?

keythkeythkeyth, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

If you heard this in person I am waaaay beyond jealous...

You're way beyond jealous, then. (I have some photos around.)

will roy montgomery ever release anything ever again?

He's pretty nicely settled into being an academic, I think.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 04:23 (sixteen years ago)

Jessamine!

fight the real NME (Curt1s Stephens), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 05:21 (sixteen years ago)

love 'em all - roy & loren are also big favs

fight the real NME (Curt1s Stephens), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 05:21 (sixteen years ago)

omg crootis, great username A++

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 05:24 (sixteen years ago)

nicely settled into being an academic is a sad end for a man of such musical talent.
fucking academics.

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 05:24 (sixteen years ago)

I have the OG vinyl box. Voted FSA for the undeniable influence on my own musical development. My favorite song on here is Roy's, though.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

nicely settled into being an academic is a sad end for a man of such musical talent.
fucking academics.

Hey now, Ian, he's just focusing in on what is more important to him now:

Basically my job is to train up future environmental policy-makers and managers. I lecture undergrads and post-grads and supervise Masters and PhD students researching environmental management topics. Not difficult at all to combine careers since I don't have a musical one. The musical work is a fitful activity and the pressures are more with family life and being a volunteer firefighter in my twilight years.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

More power to him. I don't envy a single person trying to make a living playing music.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

connors vs charalambides for me

might vote connors cuz nobody else seems like they're gonna

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

gotta be Roy Division for me.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

I've never seen this comp before, but looks right up my street. The only artist I've not heard is Roy Montgomery - whom you all seem to like a lot. Are there any recordings of his that you might recommend?

I'll check if this compilation is available anywhere.

Duke, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

A lot of his stuff is on emusic I think, along with the albums he made with Bardo Pond as Hash Jar Tempo

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

Are there any recordings of his that you might recommend?

Most of them. (I have the AMG reviews to prove it.) Offhand I'd say try Songs From the South Island or Temple IV.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

man, i didn't even know that 2-CD comp of roy's instrumental works existed!

f. hazel, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

and for roy montgomery, the essential albums are scenes from the south island (instrumental, watery), temple IV (instrumental, heavy), and 324 E. 13th Street #7 (singles collected, gorgeous).

f. hazel, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

That singles comp really is incredible. He was also in the Pin Group.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

how much could i sell this on vinyl for?

cutty, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

i dont think it sells for as much as it did before the cd reissue.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

Agreed on the singles comp. One thing it doesn't have is the amazing mid-song cover at the Terrastock II set -- David Bowie's "All the Madmen," done a cappella.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

okay now you're just bragging

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

co-sign the jessamine comment above! they were amazing. i prefer the second record, though.

cutty, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

cutts, you can maybe get $40-50 on ebay, but in this economy i wouldn't be surprised it was less.

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:56 (sixteen years ago)

last copy on ebay sold for $36

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:56 (sixteen years ago)

This is a very tough choice. Edging towards Bardo Pond.

krakow, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

okay now you're just bragging

Yay oh wait.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

it used to fetch over $100 so I'd hold on til the recession is over.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:59 (sixteen years ago)

cheers for the Montgomery recommendations. allmusic has quite a bit of info on him. Will definitely look him up.

Duke, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

it used to fetch over $100 so I'd hold on til the recession is over.

But it's a mental recession! Sell away! Now!

(I'll buy.)

ilxor, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

i'll take offers ;)

cutty, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 00:14 (sixteen years ago)

Def. voting charalambides on this

^^^

GÖDEL ESCHER BOCK BOCK BOCK (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)

where's the "take another bonghit then decide" option?

ian, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

It goes unspoken. ;-)

ilxor, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:06 (sixteen years ago)

Think I'm going to have to vote for Roy Montgomery, but it's been a while, so I ought to dig it out and take that all-important bong hit first.

(I can tell it's been too long because I was totally sure there was an Azusa Plane track on it for some reason)

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

for Roy suggestions, DO NOT FORGET....

DADAMAH!

That was my introduction to him.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

I was gonna say that but I couldn't remember if he was in that band or not.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 14:36 (sixteen years ago)

Dadamah LP on Majora is a classic.

ian, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

I'm still missing one of the Dadamah singles I think... I have the Scratch Sun/Radio Brain 7" but I'm pretty sure there's at least one more.

ian, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

The Dadamah CD on majora contains the LP and singles.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, but who wants a CD?

ian, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

Hi there! (I got the Kranky CD of same years upon years back, recently gave it a relisten.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

NOBODY WANTS CDS!!!

That's why I cry myself to sleep every night.

We're doing vinyl soon. You better sell some copies!

dan selzer, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

Nicotine/High Time is the other single. I think I have that one. I'll give it to you, or trade it for "store credit" or something.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 19:49 (sixteen years ago)

I have Scenes from the South Island on vinyl!

f. hazel, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 19:49 (sixteen years ago)

I love this comp. the vinyl can't be THAT rare, there's like 6 people on the thread already who have it (me too)

second half of that Charalambides track usedta scare the hell out of me

this is a hard poll

dmr, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

dan, i'd buy 10-20 copies of anything you release as an initial order, and with mailorder probably end up selling more than that. xpxp

ian, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

i'll trade pastries or beer for records also fyi

ian, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

NOBODY WANTS CDS!!!

lol, I just heard about somebody planning to start a label and they will only do vinyl and digital releases

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

The way Merge does it, where you buy an LP and it has a download code for the album in mp3 format, is pretty nice. Assuming the mp3s are a decent bitrate.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

that's a v sensible business model i think, ed. even considering the low cost of CD manufacture, the market seems to be rapidly dividing between LP and mp3 crowd; i don't know many serious CD collectors. people get more obsessive about their harddrives, it seems.

ian, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

If you heard this in person I am waaaay beyond jealous...

Be jealous. I was at both shows.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

Bastard. How can I choose?

Grumble.

Chose Roy. SCENES FROM THE SOUTH ISLAND is superlative. 324 E. 13th Street #7 is a devastating collection of his singles. Still trying to track down the collection of instrumental singles from a couple years back.

But really, having to choose from that pack? Just plain mean.

Oh, and I'll attempt to top Chris and note that I was at the "drone summit" which featured Dave Pearce of FSA jamming with the guys from Bardo Pond...and someone else, as I recall. Maybe Carl Hultgren of Windy and Carl. Was awhile back.

Matt M., Thursday, 2 April 2009 00:45 (sixteen years ago)

^^ captured on the excellent 10" EP "Providence."

ian, Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:29 (sixteen years ago)

Also on CD. Haven't listened to it in forever.

Matt M., Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:33 (sixteen years ago)

It's not.... I don't know, it doesn't stand out in any way for me (not at the original performance obv) but it's a very nice thing to listen to.

ian, Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)

Dave Pearce of FSA jamming with the guys from Bardo Pond...and someone else, as I recall. Maybe Carl Hultgren of Windy and Carl.

It was Dave P., the Gibbons Bros., Carl, and Jason from Azusa Plane (I believe)

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:45 (sixteen years ago)

the winner is: hash jar tempo

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:47 (sixteen years ago)

I refuse to accept the notion that the Hash Jar Tempo albums are in any way superior to the contemporary work of Charalambides, FSA, Roy or Loren M Connors.

ian, Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:52 (sixteen years ago)

i just meant i can't choose between roy and bardo pond

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:53 (sixteen years ago)

probably vote for roy on the strength "fantasia on a theme ..."

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:55 (sixteen years ago)

if i was going to put together a compilation like this, a handful of artists a side apiece, it might look like this:

bob dylan
the dead c
max ochs
u.s. girls
jandek
metal mountains

(all currently active afaik.)

ian, Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:55 (sixteen years ago)

even considering the low cost of CD manufacture, the market seems to be rapidly dividing between LP and mp3 crowd

yeah, CDs are cheap to manufacture but nobody wants to buy them! unless you're like, AC/DC or cat power or somebody with bigbox pull.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:57 (sixteen years ago)

that's the idea, yeah.
independent labels seem to be better going the LP/digital route, as bizarre as it may sound to a lot of people. this shouldn't really be surprising, considering the short lifespan of the cassette as a popular, marketable format.

ian, Thursday, 2 April 2009 04:01 (sixteen years ago)

i.e. cds are just clutter and mp3s are near enough in quality (at least for the average consumer) to make them the preferable format. tbh i'd like to know more about legal, purchased downloads vs. torrents & slsk, but there is basically no cost to manufacture a digital file, so even with a lower total number of sales the profits can still be substantial. BUT, then someone just posts it on a blog and there go another hundred sales.

ian, Thursday, 2 April 2009 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

six finger satellite's half control has been out digitally for months, with no sign of the physical object appearing soon. ben couldn't even get it out in time for their SXSW show. hard times.

I saw u.s. girls a few weeks ago. I heard she got really pissed at the providence band that headlined.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Thursday, 2 April 2009 04:09 (sixteen years ago)

Voted FSA for my fave artist on this awesome comp.

Mark, Thursday, 2 April 2009 04:12 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 3 April 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

Vote vote vote!!!

ilxor, Saturday, 4 April 2009 05:24 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Saturday, 4 April 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

That looks about right.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 5 April 2009 00:20 (sixteen years ago)

Hate to see anyone "lose" but this looks alright. Didn't expect quite this much Roy love but I've no complaints!

ilxor, Sunday, 5 April 2009 01:12 (sixteen years ago)

I do have to shout out for that Jessamine singles comp - totally worth tracking down

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Sunday, 5 April 2009 07:58 (sixteen years ago)

Loren Connors probably deserves more love than this result suggests, as well.

krakow, Sunday, 5 April 2009 08:05 (sixteen years ago)

Indeed he does.
