Something Mr. Burnsish about that title. Anyway.

Won't you come
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 06:16 (fifteen years ago) link
I'd rather not. At least, not on the basis of the title track.

Yeah, they b second on the bill at Reading this year.
Why?
― Mark G, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 09:42 (fifteen years ago) link
If I owned a house I'd bet it on them getting a hueg and insanely devotional crowd there, is why

Really?
Like, 300 front of stage, and the rest milling around the foodstalls or sat down going "When's Kings of Leon on then?"

Then again, I said the same about Green Day being toppobill, back when they'd been announced, and "American Idiot" hadn't come out yet.

I thought it was a kind of accepted fact that there are people eternally nutso for Placebo even if you can go about your business without ever meeting any of them... moreso in mainland Europe but still. Same with Muse
― Climate Of Basshunter (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 09:53 (fifteen years ago) link
well, Muse would have made sense.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 09:53 (fifteen years ago) link
Actually, now I think of it, Placebo were on when we had the weekend tickets. They were mid-day, went down fine. Still...

It is actually fairly difficult to avoid Muse fans but I don't think I've met anyone who would admit to liking Placebo in the last 10 years.

But yes they will get a massive crowd, mostly because the Reading Festival is full of idiots.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 10:54 (fifteen years ago) link
so i guess this failed?
haven't listened to it yet.

Is it actually out? A stealth release.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 June 2009 02:53 (fifteen years ago) link
yes, it came out June 9.

RIP etc.

Finally listening to this and you can tell that leaving EMI and getting the new drummer (whoever he is) has meant they essentially retrenched. No notable guest turns from the like of Michael Stipe, more of an insular effort for the long converted. As one of those people I'm not minding at all but I always had hoped they would find a way to go for the brass ring. I guess all the attempts to break America last time out just bored them or pissed them off.

seems a shame because they can't HALF write a tuuuune when they want. havent heard the new stuff, but i thought the last album was fantastic and even people who seemed to always have a beef with them (the NME for one) said it was brilliant.
there's a sampler for this album on SPOTIFY (and also the entire back catalogue) for what it's worth.
