There is a particular PJ Harvey song that I have been trying to track down--I have no idea which album it's from, and very little idea of the lyrics, except it the chorus sounds something like:

"you-want-to-hear-my-love-sing--MORE"

those are definitely not the correct lyrics, but there is a beer in DC for whoever can figure this one out for me.

quincie, Thursday, 2 April 2009 19:39 (fifteen years ago) link

You want to hear my "Long Snake Moan", from To Bring You My Love.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 2 April 2009 19:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Bingo! Now if only I can find the damn CD--presumably it is *somewhere* in the apartment.

I feel like I already voted for Dress in another poll? I may, however, have the stupid today.

Dress. It's what made me realize Rob Ellis was one of my favorite drummers.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:29 (fifteen years ago) link

"O My Lover" -- a perfect song to kick off one of the better music catalogues of the past 15-20 years.

ilxor, Thursday, 2 April 2009 21:57 (fifteen years ago) link

once upon a time i'd've gone for 'sheela-na-gig' with no questions - now i think it might be between 'dress' and 'o stella'.

lex pretend, Thursday, 2 April 2009 23:36 (fifteen years ago) link

"Dress" was the first one I heard. "O my lover" was the one that made me go "god".

Mark G, Thursday, 2 April 2009 23:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh My Lover, obv.

Turangalila, Friday, 3 April 2009 00:02 (fifteen years ago) link

dress!

Spot on about the great drumming on 'Dress', it makes the track feel all off-kilter. What's he doing that's so unusual?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 3 April 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Went to vote for Oh My Lover and it said "You have already voted on this poll". Wonder what I voted? Probably Dress. But tonight it would have been OML.

DavidM, Friday, 3 April 2009 20:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Listening to this now for the first time in years and srsly every track (from the first two-thirds, at least) is making me go "...oh, no, THIS one is best!"

Yeah, it'd have been my third choice, still...

two years pass...

Shouldn't this thread have been titled, "Poll My Lover"?

Turangalila, Monday, 26 September 2011 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Such a great fucking song, probably still her best, imo.

Turangalila, Monday, 26 September 2011 15:49 (thirteen years ago) link

one month passes...

Don't like the sound of this album. The bass asphyxiates the listener. And her voice is too low in the mix. But great album though.

ON my HILL i WAIT for WIND
listened to this for the first time in a zillion years this week and it was marvelous

La Lechera, Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:16 (nine years ago) link

an all-time favourite. possibly top 3?

Fizzles, Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:25 (nine years ago) link

Hearing it at 18 about a year after it came out but before Rid of Me was revelatory. I was so glad to have found it, relieved even, and then Rid of Me made Dry feel like a trusted childhood friend. It was so cool to hear her try on different voices.

La Lechera, Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:35 (nine years ago) link

And the songs still sound relevant and meaningful and super cool (the recording not as much but w/e)

La Lechera, Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:36 (nine years ago) link

yeah it's a good way of putting it. rid of me is probably one of my favourite lps of all time, but like dry because it lacks the single-minded rigour of rid of me. it's slightly various.

Fizzles, Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:39 (nine years ago) link

Her power trio was so inspiring. I love the recording. I played it for my guitar teacher once, and his reaction was that the recording captured the same huge but real sonic vibe/quality as early Zeppelin. Have always preferred it to Rid of Me, which is still great but a rough listen. In the most literal sense; Albini's dynamics are downright abusive, and don't always do the clarity and cohesion of that rhythm section justice.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 July 2015 21:07 (nine years ago) link

I love both almost equally, and for different reasons, and they were insanely important to me in the spring/summer of 1993. I didn't listen to much else.

And I'm here at :47, in the front:

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 9 July 2015 23:15 (nine years ago) link

Listened to this a lot a lot a lot while I was living in a boarding house and drawing the first couple issues of my comic.

When rid of me came out it didn't really connect with me as much; it seemed like it was DOING A THING too much like the way Bowie records do a thing, idk, and to bring you my love was even more like that. I still like dry the most though the demo version of rid of me is awesome too.

LL remember I was bugging u to send me this album but you couldn't find it. You found it!

demonic mnevice (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 9 July 2015 23:29 (nine years ago) link

Ha, yeah I totally found it! I love Rid of Me equally but also for different reasons. That video is memory gold. I wonder if any of the shows I went to are on Youtube? Prob not, I was in Ohio.

I guess ultimately this album helped me grow up a little, at least enough to be ready for Rid of Me. I was really angry all the time back then.

La Lechera, Thursday, 9 July 2015 23:57 (nine years ago) link

I love her guitar.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 July 2015 00:02 (nine years ago) link

Has there ever been a Rid of Me vs. Dry poll? Seems like both are loved pretty equally.

Darin, Friday, 10 July 2015 00:42 (nine years ago) link

Seriously, her guitar, the bass, the drums - trio was next level. I totally get what JL is saying about "doing a thing," though. Especially after the visceral perfection of the first two, I always figured praise for (the still fine) To Bring You My Love was overreaction from people who missed said first two. Though if I were honest I'd admit "Songs ..." is the one I responded the most to, emotionally.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 10 July 2015 03:02 (nine years ago) link

Er, "Stories..."
